Hello everyone! Thanks for stopping by. The purpose of this video was to give any newer candle makers an idea of supplies and tools that may serve useful getting started with candle making. That being said, many of us long time candle makers are still using a number of these inexpensive every-day household items to get the job done. Please share this video with any new candle makers out there looking for help on what to invest in early on. Take care!

Hello again! Where do you buy your fragrance oils? Do you have a video on just fragrance oils? Just to learn what brands you recommend and how much oil to add the wax etc etc..Thanks!

@@tiffaniparks5450 Hey Tiffani. I buy regularly from a few places. Candle Science, Natures Garden, Aztec are the ones in most of my products as of now. I do not have a video just on fragrance oils really.. I mention them here and there with some tips throughout several videos. But not a dedicated one yet. Good idea though and I will add your suggestion to my list of video topics! :)

Wade!! This video was so super helpful even for a non beginner like myself. I definitely learned some new things I hadn't thought of. The only thing it seems you didn't mention is wick holders. I know there are a bunch of them on the market but it might be helpful for folks to know which ones you think work better? In your other video where you made the Blue Spruce small batch, you pulled out some kind of 4 pronged contraption I had never seen before, and my mind = BLOWN! ALL I had ever seen were those stupid toothpicks and the metal ones I typically use. Thanks for sharing either way!

Totes for wax and all other supplies are good to have if you have pets. My orange cat loves to dig into bags and will rip out its contents. I caught him just in time from tearing up a 9lb bag of soy lol. Aside from that, his cat hairs have ended up in my melting pot and have been visible in pics, just hanging off my molded candle's nose 😂

Hi! I love your videos, they are definitely the most helpful I’ve found! I do have a question though- the wick setter you’re using from Candle Science has a ton of bad reviews citing off-center wicks or broken glass when using this tool. Have you ever experienced any trouble with it?
@LifeinGlow
@LifeinGlow 3 года назад
Thanks a lot for the video and separating the supplies into must-haves and supplementary. Q1: can those wick cutters also cut wooden wicks? Q2: why is it that candlemakers pore such big amounts of fragrances, is it healthy?? I love aromatherapy and usually we EOs are measured in 1/2dr to a few drops while in CM people use such big amounts!! Also can you make a video ways to make candle-making sustainability-friendly? (Eco-friendly) thanks in advance!
@BlackTieBarn
@BlackTieBarn 3 года назад
Thank you so much for the feedback! Q1: you can use the cutters for woodwicks but not as well. Especially if the wood wicks are thick. I use different little snips for those. I believe they are linked in the description as well! :) Q2: most waxes hold anywhere up to 10% and depending on oil and preferred strength makers generally use anything between 6 and 10. Regarding eco friendly...you can only go so far. Jars, soy waxes (although those still require industrial equipment as do most the supplies so still causes pollution). Both FOs and EOs can be toxic when used incorrectly. Wicks are fine. So it's mostly about material production (wax, jars, etc). And then of course you have more control over packaging and shipping. But it's tough to make any of it 100% eco friendly. Best bet is probably recyclable jars, cotton wicks, coconut or spy wax, and EOs

Hi Wade! Where is a good place to find the wick holders that you use to make the 7oz straight jars in your videos? (Not the wick setting tool from Candle Science but the wick holders after pour). None of the normal suppliers carry anything like the holders you use. I'm struggling to get straight wicks after cooling because they move slightly as the wax settles using holders that don't wrap around the rim of the jar. Thanks!

I use wax melting tanks and also the presto pots with a spigot for smaller batches. Those work fine as long as you gradually increase the heat. I always start on low and move up until k het the right temp. Turning them on all the way to desired temp from the getgo is bad. It will burn the wax. Those are the only methods to melt wax i ever use. Well, I started with the double boil method years ago, but no longer. :)

That was a fun video. I enjoyed it very much along with the great information. I have a question for you. I'm looking for more specific details about starting a website or using Shopify, buying a website name (VPS, Host, ...? What are all of these?) What do I need specifically to do a Shopify account? I have a logo, but I need more specific details. Do you have a video on this? I have already looked at a good amount of your videos, but haven't found details about setting a Shopify account. What exactly do I need to buy from the Domaine name? Why is the domaine name more expensive from Shopify? Can you help me please? It would be appreciated. Thanks.
@BlackTieBarn
@BlackTieBarn 2 года назад
Hey Danielle... First, thanks so much for the feedback! Those are all good questions but not easily answered in a single comment/reply. I will summarize a little below and work on planning a video on this as well. 1) you can buy domains from many places. Godaddy, BlueHost, Google, or even straight from shopify. Domains are cheap (usually under $20/year 2) The high cost you are seeing on Shopify is for website HOSTING not just the domain. Domain is the address yuor website is parked at. For example, my domain is www.blacktiebarn.com The hosting is where you create/publish your actual website (not jsut the address). Shopify as you mentioned could be your host/e-commerce 3) Specifics on setting up your website is more lengthy. ill work on a video when I can. But in the meantime, shopify has good support and lots of good tutorials if you want to start there and familiarize yourself. It is fairly straight forward to do if you have any tech skills at all. But sounds like this might be a new beast for you to manage. I would either work with shopify or consider looking to pay someone to help with your site (at least to get it off the ground).

Hey Anna. Thanks! It depends on your location, and what jars you want. I use tons of suppliers. Check out my "supplies" video here on the channel. Go to videos and search supplies. I only send you there as I list many of them out for ya. More to come on this as well. :)

What do you put your extra wax in to keep it " fresh " until your ready to use it again without it going bad once it is opened out the package .
@BlackTieBarn
@BlackTieBarn 3 года назад
Just bag in uts container. Wax doesnt go bad like oils etc would. Well, organic waxes will eventually but it depends on the kind. I just keep mine in their original packaging or tubs and use as needed. As long as not extreme weather or humidity you are fine.

Hello great video.. very informative I’m just starting out .. I have a question witch I’m sure you get a lot now how do you Measure how much wax you will need for 8 ounce jars and then how much fragrance to add to the poring pot? That’s one of the things I’m not sure of ? I have a 4 lb poring pot I have 12 - 8 ounce jars now I want to do like 2 jars of the same FO for testing.. so basically how do I measure that stuff out thanks ..
@BlackTieBarn
@BlackTieBarn 3 года назад
I'm going to be doing a video on this soon that will be much easier to explain and follow. But essentially these steps: 1) figure out total fill (by weight not volume). Your 8ox jars really only hold about 7oz total. Remember... always use weight not volume in candle making. For this example let's use 2 candles since you want to do 2 of each scent. So that is 2x7 for total of 14 ounces. 2) determine what percent of FO you want to use. Let's say you want to use 9% which is pretty standard. There are several ways to do this calculation but to keep this simple for you for now... just take your total 14 x .09 and that gives you the amount of fragrance oil to add. If you round up it equals about 1.3. 3) your new total is 14 + 1.3 which is 15.3. This may be a tad too much for your jars but a little extra is better than not enough. So, now that you know your numbers, heat up your wax and add 14ounces to your pouring pot. Then add your 1.3 of fragrance. Of course wick, blend, and pour. You will repeat this for each new scent or jars. Hope this helps.

Hiya, Great video, thank you, and sorry if this is a silly question, but... does anyone know whether I can use my regular cooking pans for making soy wax candles please? I got given a kit for Xmas and haven't used it yet because I can't find the answer anywhere and I don't want to take any risks with my home cooking pots/pans but I also don't want to buy special equipment just for making candles once. I know I might end up getting the bug and deciding to make more, at which point I would invest in a few bits, but for now, I just want to use my kit without having any extra expenses as I'm on a pretty tight budget. Many thanks to anyone who can answer 🙂

Anyone knows a good candle making supplier in Europe(or close to europe)? I wanna start making candles myself but im unable to find a decent place to buy my supplies. My biggest problem is wax. I wanted to try Pro blend 600 and IGI 6006 but they are nowhere to be found in EU. Hello! I was wondering why some people put their pouring pitchers under heat lamps? 🤷‍♀️
@BlackTieBarn

They do that to preheat them so the wax doesn't cool as quickly when added to it. Usually only necessary if they aren't heating their wax up as high as others. Nothing wrong with it. But I've literally never done it. :)

Hi there. I know I am asking this question before watching the video fully so forgive me if it is already answered in the video. You can point me to a timestamp if its easier but, What is the reason why you mix soy and paraffin wax in your candles? Also. why do you use so many different kinds of wax?
@BlackTieBarn
@BlackTieBarn 2 года назад
I use many kinds for 2 reasons. Education purposes to help more candle makers. And, I have large clients that want different waxes for one reason or another. I mix paraffin and soy because it just makes a good blend. I like the creaminess of soy but thehl hot throw and wicking of paraffin.
