Canon's Rebel line of cameras have always been among the most popular DSLRs out there, so we were looking forward to some time with the new T4i. Fortunately, the camera arrived during the Calgary Stampede's 100th Anniversary celebration, so we went to the exhibition grounds to see how the latest Rebel would perform. See if the new Live View autofocus, touch screen, and increased burst rate are worth the price.

one of the things a love about all the videos well the reviews of new cameras and lenses for one but i love love love the how they are shot in Canada so it really gives men not only a sense of what cameras can do in the lovely place i call home but it inspires me as well to go and create

Hello, I am really impressed by your reviews and am wondering if I could get some advice. I guess I am looking for the best camera mirrorless or DSLR that has good auto picture taking (I am a novice in the manual world) and cinematic video taking (similar to the T4i but from your review the video doesn't look like it is the best?). I am a canon fan and have been using my point and shoot 12 mp camera for the last 5 years, but feel I need better quality. What would you recommend for a novice like me? Is a T4i suffice?

For the intro and outro I used a Nikkor 17-35 F2.8 on the AF100. For the Stampede intro shot on the T4i, Chris used the Canon 18-55 IS II, 40mm F2.8 STM, and 85mm F1.8. Jordan @ The Camera Store TV

Couldnt the rapid shots issue be more a limitation of the SD card your using? like what would happen if you put say a SanDisk SD Extreme (45mbs) or Extreme Pro (95mbs) write speed card? could that correct the issue since the buffer could write to the card faster? what memory card did you use? I dont have the camera yet its on its way but that was something that did pop into my mind.

It was launched before we started consistently shooting videos. No deliberate snub, its a great camera.

Hey! Just purchased this camera a while ago but I have a question regarding video. Sometimes it is a little bothersome for it to be auto-focusing all the time in while filming. Is it a way to turn the autofocus off in video?

Actually, Chris was referring to the Sony A57 and Pentax K-30. Both these cameras outperform the T4i in nearly every way. Look for our Pentax K-30 field test this week. Jordan @ The Camera Store TV

When reviewing the camera, was the in-camera HDR functionality evaluated? That is part of the feature set that Canon touts as separating the T4i from the T3i.

Hey good sir!, I'm planning on doing a documentary, have been looking into the t4i, so mostly interviews, not a lot of "action" scenes. I am a first timer as well into DSLR's, so i guess my question is go for the T4i? or can i do everything i want to do with the T3i? thanks

If you're using manual focus, the T3i is an equally good camera. Canon's big feature on the T4i was supposed to the continuous AF during video, so we tested it quite a bit. It isn't very good. If you want to manually focus, you can save money, get the T3i and create videos of exactly the same quality. Jordan @ The Camera Store TV

i have a question, this slightly pertains to the rebel series and lens. i have a t3i and wanting to start taking some macro close up pictures. i found a wide angle lens with a macro lens for $11 on amazon. and then there are canon macro lenses for $400 and above. what is the difference. If this is a dumb question sorry lol

This is one of the best videos I have watched concerning the Canon Rebel T4i which I now own. I would, however take contention with the buffer issue in continuous rapid shooting. I found by turning off the Chromatic Aberration Correction feature provides all the continuous rapid file i need. I can hold the button down until my finger goes to sleep and it does not slow down at all. The AF could be faster but for video, which is where I would use it, it seems to suffice.

60D is great for cinematography as well as photography. Not only does it have more features than the Rebel series, its high depth and sharpness quality is great for music videos.

Don't know if it's an issue with the Canon like you say, but my Pentax K-30 doesn't seem to get impacted that much by at least one SanDisk class 6 card I have that allows a burst of around 5 continuous frames (the camera is rated at 6 per sec) and then starts to slow down. But with my SanDisk Ultra I get full speeds and faster buffer clearing. Maybe it would affect it the same way to a point in which the cameras writing system would be the culprit.

I've took an ISO performance test in the shop where I work: the image is still awesome 'til the max ISO of 25600! I found it a real increase of performance if compared to the T3i that I have! Digic 5 to me has made the miracle! (however I'm happy with my T3i)

Depends on your price range. If you have a large price range I recomend rode video mic Pro, Zoom H1 or some sort of lapel mic.

I don't think the slow contrast detect AF is a sensor size issue. The Pentax K30 and Sony NEX cameras focus much quicker in live view with the same size sensor. Canon and Nikon really needs to work on this issue. Jordan @ The Camera Store TV
