Do your step sequencer drums and piano roll beats sound robotic, mechanical, and like they're stuck in the uncanny valley of "fake drum machine" hell? Ryan is here to help! When this topic came up on a recent livestream, he realized he's never made a video that needed to change!
With just a few clicks and a few taps into a basic mic you can extract the human feel from audio and apply it to your MIDI programming for an instant "achievement unlocked" level up to natural groove!

Dude..... I play most of my beats with my midi controller, but still, this is going to be massively useful! Just tested it out real fast and it worked perfectly... man! That's going to be damn useful!
@ReasonStudios
@ReasonStudios Год назад
Cool! One thing I didn't mention in the video is that if you play beats on a MIDI controller regularly, then you can try skipping the audio to MIDI conversion part and just record a MIDI clip with your own human feel and Get the Groove from that. I usually still prefer the audio process because it handles dynamics differently than my controller playing does but try both!

This is a very useful technique, especially useful with players. Drummers I've known use nonsense words and phrases like :Ka Ching Ka Chang" to get a feel a lot, not just for grooves, but pickups and fills "(Pat Boone Debbie Boone"). But the ones I've seen use them most are horn sections, where the horns have to lock in the groove to play tight. "Lumpdy Lumpdy" is a common feel, but everyone's favourite is "A Rump A Rump"

This is easily one of the most useful and helpful vids that have come out of this channel. I've never delved into the groove functions and was always a little perplexed by how to use them. Granted, I should RTFM more than I have done. I'd definitely like to see the groove functions expanded upon more. One thing that I thought about during this vid is that not all of the musicians would play perfectly in time to that one groove, so even more imperfections need to be programmed in; one groove for each musician that's based on the drummer's groove. Keep vids like this one coming please Ryan.

I like the swing implementation and the customizability, especially with the "get groove" function as Ryan showed in the video. Def. going to use it a lot more in my future productions. As much as I wanna thank you for this, I seem to have a problem I can't fix. I've tried everything to make my tracks sound human: applying extracted grooves (which won't really work if they beat has no 16ths), using Kong's physical modeling with varying snare hits, manually offsetting hits by fractions of seconds (and checking at 50 bpm to see if it sounds OK), randomizing velocities even within chords, varying note lengths, changing chord voicings here and there, adding keyboard flourishes like a keyboard player would etc. etc. etc. I've given up using synthetic guitars and am about to give up synthetic bass, too. The big challenge, I think, is that I am trying (emphasis on trying) to emulate the hi-fi sound of the late 70s and early 80s, by the likes of The Doobie Brothers and Pages. You know, AOR, yacht rock etc. These guys were aiming at machine-like perfection, which of course they could never get. I am aiming at the imperfect perfection they've actually achieved. The irony is that two of the records I would most like my drum tracks to sound like were actually programmed (Steely Dan's Gaucho, on a "Wendel", and Hiroshi Sato's Awakening, on a Linn). Do you have any broader ideas to share, other than the usual fine-tuned sequencer tweeks?
