Nah, I bought a new Jockey Wheel for my 16 year old van, to replace the existing narrow rubber flat spot that sank in the soft ground and gravel, I bought the Pneumatic shown, but having used these in a Garden Trolly and found that two had punctured without explanation, I decided on a solid rubber equivalent with the same tread pattern at 3.00-4 profile, and fitted shims to centre the axle. Job done, it'll never wear out, and has a wider profile so that it doesn't sink in soft earth or gravel.

I’m about to change my jockey wheel and was intending to fit a pneumatic one. Changed my mind based on your findings. Didn’t appreciate there would be so much hassle keeping it inflated. Thanks for this. Very useful.

Crikey, we must be living parallel caravan lives! I watched your comparison this morning between 2wd and 4wd movers on a TA caravan. Not only do we have the same caravan, but also the same problem getting it out of our drive. Anyway, I've decided to get a 4wd to replace the current 2wd. So, now I find your jockey wheel comparison. Last September I had real problems getting onto a gravel pitch with the standard jockey wheel, so I went to a local dealer and purchased an Al-Ko pneumatic jockey wheel and fitted it on site. It worked fantastic on the gravel. Then I got home and whilst getting into my drive (tarmac) the tyre deflated!!! I wish I'd seen this video first - now I'm going to have to get a Kartt one! You are costing me money :) but helping to lower my stress. Thanks again. KH

I am a motorhomer and have no need for a jockey wheel but I have to say that I enjoyed watching the review and learned something from it. I even learned something from the comments section 😛. My view if you want it is.... if a Vlog is too polished, it ain’t real. I also like a little light hearted humour. More of the same please Graham 👍🏻😄 Trev

Great review. I too have purchased a Karrt jockey wheel off the back of your review. The standard plastic one just kept sinking in gravel surfaces causing the arm to bend and eventually break the clamp. Was tempted by Pneumatic but like other reviewers was put off by the issues you had

The shaft on my Alco jockey wheel does not appear to fit snugly in the clamp, therefore it bends a bit making hitching up and unhitching quite difficult. At times the shaft jams at an angle and needs kicking or hitting to straighten it up. Would this jockey wheel resolve the problem

Excellent video Graham. We have the rubbish plastic one on our Buccaneer and it's chewed within 12 months. Was going to get a pneumatic one but I think you have now swayed me to the kart one. Nice comparison between the three.

I know it's a while since your review but did you think of filling the pneumatic wheel with expanding foam so that it shouldn't deflate?

Thanks for watching. That was mentioned to me and it's a good idea. I think it was user error, I didn't inflate it enough. I bought the pneumatic about a month before I got the Kartt one, the kartt one is much better, but I'll keep the other as a spare. Not that you really need a spare jockey wheel. Graham

Hey Graham, great video have just purchased Bailey Phoenix 760 (double axel) have been recommended to only have 1 set of motor movers, do you think two sets is essential or not in your experience? (From New Zealand)

Hi Sean thanks for watching. We only have one set of movers and it’s my biggest regret! Although they can move the caravan, they struggle mainly when turning and on slight hills. If you can afford it, go for 4. Thanks again, Graham

Tried pneumatic jockey wheel on my Coachman VIP 520 - total failure, tyre either pulls off the rim or the inner tube bursts due to the van weight. Pneumatic are good for bumping gently over shallow kerbs, but totally not suitable for heavier caravans. I have gone to a wide solid wheel as the one you demonstrate. The wider plastic/rubber wheel also limits sinking in softer ground. Cheers, Ian C

Greasing the old one would have improved how it lifted the hitch. Plus you can normally change the bearings if its really bad.

Pneumatic one was too soft and pulled from the rim when you turned your caravan. The tire twisted.

pneumatic tyre will go across soft grass and gravel without digging in like a snow plough , it’s also great for going up kerbs. I also have a U4 and I thing the A frame is a bad design, when the jockey wheel is in its highest position that area of the A frame should be cut away to allow the wheel to sit more snug and reduce the chance of rapping your knuckles when locking the wheel in place. Btw the original jockey wheel and the pneumatic one are both alko so they should each work as smoothly as each other , when I got my new van the jockey wheel was faulty, even after regreasing it it still took Geoff capes to turn it.

Top video Graham , when we ordered our new Bailey they reeled off a load of extras and asked about any upgrades and as we’ve got a gravel driveway I asked for a neumatic jockey wheel to be fitted, I will now cancel that and maybe look into the karrt jockey wheel, you didn’t mention the price (unless you did and I missed it) thanks again graham, your giving us a great insight into the caravan world 🤣👍

Good review. I have the Kartt one and am very pleased with it. The original one from Bailey was badly worn / damaged after less than a year of use. The click on the Kartt as you wind it is the mechanism to stop it unwinding on its own - happened to me twice when towing. That was the reason I chose the Kartt. Pneumatic jockey wheels have always looked too much faff to me. You should buy yourself a good quality pressure gauge the gauges on pumps are not very accurate!

I bought an Alko pneumatic to replace the chewed up plastic that came with the caravan, the bearing on the pneumatic wheel has just collapsed. Now do I replace the wheel at about £ 20 or buy a Karrt jockey wheel?

Just the video I needed to see, we have a plastic jockey wheel and it's poor quality and as our storage site is all gravel I find it digs in been looking at various types of wheel I did consider the pneumatic tyre type but after your demo I think I'll get the rubber type. Cheers Jon

Yes when we replaced caravans I bought a new one (I know, a you tuber buying something 😂) Still impressed, you do get some little nicks out off the rubber wheel, but I have to negotiate a hole in the road and I always end up getting the jockey wheel in it 🙄So yes, I spent my own money on one. Best on gravel drives IMO 👍🏻

Hello, Just curious. I've heard motor-movers are seriously expensive. Listening to the loud whine, I wonder how much power and amperage they draw. Do you happen to know? What powers them? Is it the caravan battery?

When your screwing the van round hard like that it just causes the tyre to come off the bead. I personally would never go for an air tyre, the whole weight of the van is on it after all. I'd go for the standard or rubber wheel myself personally. Plus I don't think I'd like the bouncing about when pitched up on an air tyre as we only have standard corner steadies so the jocky wheel still takes most of the weight.

Hi Graham, good review. I’ve had a pneumatic wheel for the past couple of years an find it a lot softer run on all surfaces. Only trouble was it kept losing pressure so always having to pump it up. The one that came with the caravan was rubbish, solid plastic and no good on gravel surfaces. Think I’ll purchase a solid tyre one. A bit in between but think it will be the best all round. Keep the vids coming. Like the dry humour. 👍

We have the Pneumatic Jockey Wheel for our camping trailer, it's the only one Trago had and due to my disabilities it was perfect for me as what was there before was rubbish and actually caused me more damage to my spine as our trailer is heavy, that Kartt Jockey wheel looks good.

Thanks for watching. In theory I prefer the pneumatic one, but the worry off it deflating concerns me. Kartt one does have issues with some wheels getting chunks of rubber chipped off. Even so it is good 👍🏻

PS we actually offered to trial the super jockey wheel on one of our training trailers as we go through 2 or 3 heavy duty ones per year. They never even replied.

What was the weight of each one Graham? The Kaart is heavy at 6.8 Kilos, but how much more than the standard AlKo one and the pneumatic one. Maybe I missed the info somewhere. Good review.

Thanks Graham. This looks a very good product and was a good comparison. I have to say that I feel your pain. These videos take an age to write, produce and edit. THEY ALSO COST MONEY TO KEEP GOING. Companies are quite happy to send products as it keeps the advertising budgets down for them. It also allows us to share content and ideas to all the Carvanning Folk out there. I''ve tried a number of different jockey wheels and conclude that the nose weight of the van makes a massive difference the the performance of each wheel, the plastic excuse supplied with the van as standard was little more than a joke item and a tragic insult when you consider the purchase price of the van, next I tried a pneumatic tyre and had to pump it up to 50 psi to even get the van to move exceeding the recommended 35 psi max by a good bit and putting me in fear of an imminent explosive decompression! The metal solid rubber wheel proved to be the only suitable tyre for the nose weight of our van at 150kg.

Excellent video Graham. I've not seen a 'comparison' video of caravan jockey wheels before, so this is really useful, great work. I replaced our original Bailey/Al-KO jockey wheel with a slightly better AL-KO one last year as it had became cross threaded and was awful to use. I agree, the rubber wheels are much better. Stephen :-)

I wanted to get the caravan all the way off the drive, just to show how the plastic one skipped, but every time I took it onto the road a bl00dy car came along :-) So I had to just go with the "pointless review" instead. Having said that, I found it useful myself to test them all in them way. Graham

Great reviews on the jockey wheels. You would think that the caravan manufacturers would fit a decent one as standard for what you are paying for the van. Plastic have only been used recently. I can remember when Quality was allot better Excellent video editing .

I don't understand why jockey wheels have to have the castor action. If the centre of wheel was directly under the shaft the van wouldn't sway from side to side when changing directon.

I bought a Kartt and would definietely not recommend it. The "tyre" wears out very quickly, and I had to send the first one back after three months as the wheel shattered.

I was quite close this time around to buying the Alko, but a few people said it was tricky to set up and not very accurate. Not used it myself though..

@@CaravanVlogger well it was a very easy install on an enclosed A frame. Handle and wheel itself are quick release and with a raise of the caravan nose it was fitted (two halves do not come apart) as for the nose weight guage, I believe most people's difficulty is that the Alko instructions are difficult to understand and you have to make some calculations to get an accurate figure. The simple jist is this that the distance from the hitch to your axles is different to the distance from jockey wheel to axle so you take your nose weight multiplied by the distance of the hitch to axle, then divide that answer by the distance from the jockey to axle and hey presto you have the equivalent reading you want to measure on the jockey wheel. as for accuracy my question is does it matter? given that 6% of a 1500MTPLM caravan is 90kg and 7% is 105kgs, i know that as long as i'm just under or at the 100kg line (as a minimum) i'm fine and it saves me arsing about with bent jockey wheel shafts and nose weight gauges. set up once and save time everytime...so worth it

Ever had that sinking feeling? I'm referring to the jockey wheel ploughing in! My nose weight is around 110kg, nothing OTT in my opinion, but on soaking ground, a slim jockey wheel will plough in. Then it all becomes a world of pain, invariably in the rain. So I looked at the entire issue of spreading out the weight by moving to the softer pneumatic tyre/wheel option. The larger 'Footprint' spreading the load. I bought this from ALKO. So you would think....."Ah yes, a quality product". But no. I had the same experience as you, it went flat on first outing. The ALKO pneumatic wheel is tubeless. This is ridiculous and the main issue for failures, its not as well made as a car tubeless tyre. So the ALKO tyre went flat as soon as I (and you), changed direction. Manoeuvring applies side forces and the tyre fit is ripped off the sealing rim of the steel wheel. I'm not happy with what is essentially, 'Sack Barrow' technology, being employed into the caravan world, it doesn't work on larger vans where side loading strips the tyre from the wheel rim. Then I bought inner tubes from my dealer. This was ok for a long time, but then, almost predictably, it went flat. Aargh!! How to lessen side loads, a double pneumatic wheel set up, further spreading out the weight @ 50% on each wheel. No, this only resulted in one, or both flat tyres going flat, even with inner tubes fitted. Ah.......Furious!! My van has twin motor movers and believe me, these will rip a jockey wheel clean off if it attempts to obstruct the motion of the van whilst manoeuvring. Pneumatic tyres cant handle side loads. In the end, I went for steel rimed, Double Solid tyres setup.(I might even ad a third wheel in-between the two, if it still tends to plough in).

Thanks for commenting (and watching of course). I've looked at those double wheeled ones. I like the look of them. I'm glad you posted, I often think I'm the only person in the world that thinks most caravan "stuff" isn't fit for purpose, certainly the jockey wheel manufacturers supply with the caravan is a complete waste of time for a twin axle with movers. I mean what are they thinking. Graham

P.S the tyre wall stared to crack and split, when i contacted supplier i was told it's the sunlight and should be kept in the shade ..........................

Watch closely from 8:39, as you turn, you can see the tyre being pulled and twisting. Trouble with pneumatic tyres are they are plastic, not vulcanised rubber. I've been thinking about them but they just appear to be cheap and nasty.

Thanks for watching. Most Jockey wheels supplied by manufacturers are cheap plastic wheels, which remind me a bit of the sort of thing you get on kids toy cars..

Thanks for watching. I’ve seen them for sale, only concern would be how well it would pull almost 2 tonne of caravan up the gravel driveway 🤷‍♂️. I like the idea and they are cheaper than motor movers…

I think the problem with these jockey wheels is two fold. Firstly, it’s a plastic wheel which will deflect under a side load, and secondly, there seems to be no wire reinforcement in the tyre bead. I had exactly the same problem with my wheelbarrow, which uses the same wheel design. I ended up putting a solid rubber tyre on instead.

is that an electric cable you ran over at the start of your test. You can tell you are not an engineer as you should never put a greased threaded handle down on a dirty floor (clamp handle) as you pick up dirt and can damage the threads inside the clamp.

Can I just say I'm new to caravanning and came across your page which appears to be full of useful information. However please, please, please will you consider removing the background music in your videos. I personally find it extremely irritating, and distracting.
