Carburetion for the win! I've made 2 efi vehicles carbed and they ran smoother and had more power than the original fuel injection. 1 skipped alot and the 2nd one had bad electrical issues and wouldn't stay running. 1 carb and points distributor later ran like a champ

Hi... Gen 3 Coyote is hitting 490-510 rwhp with full exhaust, intake and a tune with e85. This would be approx 590-610 HP engine. I was curious, with the 240@.05" cam shouldn't it do much better than the gen 3 coyote with boltons and no cam? LIke 700+ HP?

Cams are based off of overlap. Modern, efficient heads don't need as much overlap as older, non-efficient heads. So when you have high duration camshafts so that engines will pull rpms, you have to increase the LSA a lot more than you normally would in order to keep the overlap down. A lot of my pulling truck engines run 119-120 LSA.

The Big bore mods is $1,900 if you supply the 5.0L $1,305 for Oliver rods $1,200 Mahle Pistons/rings,etc $1,500 in parts/labor on the heads Probably $1,250+/- for the carb and intake. $1,000 for the Meizer coyote water pump $1,250 for the COP controller, cometic gaskets, bearings, ARP studs, Oil pump upgrade. $1,500 for Comp cams and lock out plates $1,250 for headers and coils SO...about $11 grand if you have a coyote 5.0 and do almost ALL of the work yourself. For that much you could easily get a Dart OR MAN-O-WAR Block and build a 900+hp stroker with premium parts...for less.

Oops It was suppose to be DART (OR) man-O-war block.... just fixed it;-) Here's a Man-O-war build that makes 1,043hp on pump gas with a SC ;-) www.mustangandfords.com/how-to/engine/mmfp-0706-ford-stroker-engine-build/ This New Windsor...almost cost the same as the MODs alone on the coyote block. And the cam/valvetrain /intake is about 1/3 as much. With the SC this would cost as much as the EFI version of the coyote build in this video. Not to mention the 445ci in the article makes almost 900lb-ft almost double the coyote in this video. Man0O-War block is Iron...but would weigh about 50lbs more than the coyote or iron stock windsor. Dart offers an aluminum Block...but if you are spending $4k on you could get an aluminum big block for the same price and Rock a 540

Agree, Kranky. A 5.0 Coyote can get as big as...um...5.2. A Windsor can end up in the 7.5 range. My own Windsor is a 438, and I could have gone to over 460. Some like a little torque BELOW 6000 rpm's. How about over 500 lb/ft of torque from 3000 rpm's to 7000 rpm's. If a Roush 5.8 can put out 900 naturally aspirated ponies, think what a 7.6 can give you.

Just wot (wide open throttle, im talking like 1-3hp) & the best carbs 500-1000 bucks (size depending) at most and the good efi system can start at 2k- the very best 4-8k and for people that arent computer savvy they can be a + but carb do take a few month-lifetime to master(your mileage may vary) . Efi gets much better mpg and tend to have a much better bottom end depending on how crazy your cam is. Top end tuning on a carb is easy, its the mid to bottom end it takes alot more time and effort. I tend to like carbs better because I can tune a carb to almost perfection and they're much cheeper. If efi was in the 1200-2000 I would run efi just when I already have 10-15k in a motor I tend to like to save money somewhere. You know what I mean? It the same reason I still build lsx, sbc and bbc is the dollar per hp and aftermarket support. I want to do a mod motor in the future. I just want some aftermarket support other then ford ya know?

Yeah it cost 20k but dynoes far better than this coyote...... 13.5 to 1 comp ratio E85 , gibtec custom pistons, Trick flow 195 2v heads with hand porting/clean up, custom dual plenum cross ram intake designed/built by me (screams intake made 60 more hp and 37ftlbs torque) I specced the cams, block is the cammer/TR50 road race block. Lets see your turd scream 8000rpms for hours.... It won't... Mine will.... Imagine that... A block made specifically for that vs a junkyard turd. Roush made 800hp 5.0l 4vs with this block. Actually, the carb is much cheaper than any possible supercharger combination. Especially if you got through welding 101 and can fab up a manifold. Crack a catalog sometime. I hope you aren't saying buy a junkyard blower. Then, you still need an intake, etc. Plus, this is a "starting point" build. Most of the cams are ground to compensate for the feeble abilities of fuel injection...need to develop some better ones. Bigger carb, better headers, etc.

When you start getting past things like stock internals it pretty much starts becoming more about how much HP you want to make that determines how much it's going to cost i.e. 500, 600, 700, etc HP engines all cost about the same to build similarly unless it's a real odd-ball engine requiring a lot of one-off parts.

After 400 hp with a 302 its no longer a "is my engine going to blow up?" its a "wonder when its gonna blow up?". A 302 block is shockingly weak, those same mods on a 351w and you'll not only get more power but you'll also have a stronger base for hardly any more than a 302.

lol yes you can make over 500 hp with an early generation GM LS and with way less RPM AND mostly stock value train, a 600 lift cam can be used with stock Springs and rockers. with much more potential for the money in comparison. Ford is really cool stuff but way over engendered and expensive. GM doesn't need any more than one cam and no unnecessary cam chains to just complicate things terribly just for the sake of it.

+Louis Piscitell Whatever.. If you aren't interested, why watch? BTW my pushrod old tech 9.2 SVO hybrid block with old tech Roush designed (in the 80's no less) C302B heads makes everything a LS does. Sorta Cleveland, Sorta Windsor power well into the 500's along with torque from a 351CID package - stock bore and stroke, not stroked. Turns just about has high rpm as the mod motor. NASCAR banned the heads I am running after Ernie Elliot built a monster that Bill Elliot smashed all the Taladega records with and brought on the restrictor plate era. LS heads are actually pretty similar to evolved Cleveland heads Ford was racing in the 90's.

+martin750hp I'm not sure Chevrolet deserves credit just for canting the valves, since that was also done in some Chrysler engines back into the 50s. @177SCmaro
@177SCmaro 7 лет назад
Expensive? Even racing carbs are like half the cost of an EFI system. You can pay for a lot of dyno or race track time for the difference. Besides, carbs are easy. Not as precise as EFI, but easy.
@Berol2000

Berol2000 So you're saying custom racing set-ups cost more than off the shelf stuff. Quick, someone stop the presses. Why don't you price out an aftermarket carb and a compete fuel injection system for this motor and get back to me.
@Berol2000
@Berol2000 7 лет назад
I'm not here to get in a pissing match with you. All I'm saying is you can make those power levels with a naturally aspirated coyote with the OEM fuel injection system, cams, a cobra jet intake, headers, a custom tune and race fuel. For cheaper than this, hell for cheaper than a FULL DAY OF DYNO TESTING (which is what they have in it). My original question wasn't posed to throw sand in their eyes. Or to throw sand in your eyes either and get your wound up. My question was more aimed at this must certainly be aimed at a very specific application. So what is that application. Hence my original WHY question. Make sense?
@177SCmaro
@177SCmaro 7 лет назад
Berol2000 Maybe it's a pissing match you're getting wound up over for you, but it's not for me. All I'm saying is carbs are a cheaper then EFI, this should be obvious. If you have a long block, carb is cheaper then EFI and everything you need to run it by a wide margin. By half or more. And you don't need the expense of a dyno to tune it. That is just a convenience. An O2 sensor and a day at the drag strip combined with a little knowledge and experience on how carburetors work will get you dialed in. And you're posting a lot of claims over the price of parts with very little evidence as though its true.

@GlassTopRX7
@GlassTopRX7 8 лет назад
+MJ Drive train loss on modern cars is about 15% or less on average today. However unless they are factoring in corrections that doesn't look like a SAE Net HP setup. If so it's more like the gross HP from the 60's, in which case you are looking at close to a 40% difference vs wheel HP. What you would really need to see is a a bone stock engine on the same setup to compare. Plus what the same mods done to the motor only swapping the intakes.

I thought that motor was gonna put out a 1000hp but it only had 600hp. For all that money for that motor you might as well get a LS7 and put a cam and port heads for 6500hp and over 600tq , the 5.0 is a huge freaking motor for nothing lop. Poor ford. Or on the other hand buy an LS3 and get heads and cam package and push the same HP and wayyyyy more tq then the 5.0 for 1/3 of that price and half the size of the engine........p.s the intake is funny as hell, where the hell you can fit that intake under any mustang hood, just imagine an intake that is for hood clearance for the mustang, goodbye 60hp & you may gain 50tq down low. Im not hating on ford but come on now that motor look like it has more power then than that,but it don't,so it look sad when they show the numbers

DJ JONES agreed. Its easy enough for someone to say "grab an LS and have fun" like everyone and their mom does but it's also good to reach out and see if other motors can be interesting as well, even if that experiment fails it's better than just sticking with the first thing that gives you good results. Personally though I would've gone with the 6.2 SOHC Ford. Similar induction benefits with way more cubes to work with. Wish those 6.2s would start getting the attention they deserve, but what do you expect when you're put in a truck rather than a Mustang :-\ Be cool though if they made a new Mach 1 with the 6.2

@thelaborpeasant 8 лет назад
DJ JONES I'm sorry but that's a myth. It might add 50 pounds to the front, not really a big deal. Especially with the extra torque youd have. I don't understand this sudden new thought that any tiny bit of iron in the motor will magically cement your steering rack in place haha. I'm all for going as light as possible but sacrificing a couple pounds to increase your displacement by 1.2 liters is a no brainer. I hate to bring up the LS example but ask all the guys who swapped their LS1s for LQ9 strokers which motor they prefer and why. The 6.2 is the motor you want in your street/strip car. I might get laughed at today for saying it but here in 2 or 3 years when everyone's gunning for them I'll be there shaking my head. Been there many times before lol
@thelaborpeasant
@thelaborpeasant 8 лет назад
DJ JONES besides that, if they made a 6.2 specifically for a Mustang I'm sure they'd make a couple changes to it like Dodge does with their Hemis. And I'd be willing to bet one of those changes would be an aluminum block, which would negate the weight argument entirely

If you spun a. 6.2L to 8000RPM especially being a pushrod engine, you will see nothing but a beautiful explosion of pistons, rods and smoke with huge holes in the block lol.. Big CID Pushrods cant rev that high, they start to have issues with valve floating... And also the stroke is too long to survive that much RPM.

***** When i say high rpm im talking going above 7000rpm, the raptor,s redline is 6000rpm lol only the boss 302 engine is capable of going 8500rpm without breaking a sweat... even the 5.8L in the gt500 can only go to 7000rpm using its over rev feature and it can only do it for a few seconds at a time lol long stroke engines cannot withstand high rpm's like short stroke engines do and thats a fact...
@Jimmyxsx
@Jimmyxsx 9 лет назад
***** When I first replied to you, I thought you were talking about a LS3 6.2L, but now I see you were talking about a Ford SOHC 6.2L. Yea a 6.2 SOHC can rev past 7000RPM.. I once saw an article were Roush experimented with this engine, they stroked this engine to 7.0L and still revved up to 7000RPM producing 700HP and 800Hp on E85... I thought you were one of them GM Fanboys that are hating on the Coyote 5.0 lol they always say how superior the LS3 6.2L is over the coyote and when I tell them that the coyote can rev up to 8500RPM and that it makes the same hp with 1.2L of less displacement, they get all butthurt and shit lol lol

+1962Galaxie514ciMPFI thats the beauty of the 5.0L. Its down 1.2L and makes the Same Hp than the 6.2L. Long time ago BBK modded a 5.0 and a SS. +1962Galaxie514ciMPFI you just typed it in your last comment you said I have a 6.2 spinning to 9K and "Several 6.2LS making 1000 hp n/a" lol thats why I asked for a link to see it with my own eyes because its basically impossible for a 6.2 LS engine to make 1000Hp n/a If the LS3 were to spin 6600RPM it will not make 505HP lol, ever seen a dyno chart of this engine. After the engine passes 6000rpm the HP curve dips. It actually looses power the higher it revs lol
@Jimmyxsx
@Jimmyxsx 9 лет назад
+1962Galaxie514ciMPFI i never said LS motors couldn't make power past 6000rpm, I just said you were wrong when you said that the LS3 was making 430Hp at 6000hp and that if it were to spin up to 6600 rpm it will make 505HP lol Give me a link to a 6.2L LS3 making 1000hp n/a lol.. Its impossible lol the only way it would make 1000Hp n/a will be to stroke and bore this LS3 376CID to at least a 440CID but it will no longer be a 6.2L lol Hell yea that coyote 5.0L is a beast, liter per liter it makes more power than any LS engine guaranteed. 505hp with a cammed 6.2L not impressed lol Ford's new 5.2L Coyote based V8 is gonna make 500Hp right out of the box in the new SVT GT350.
