@Delaware History Exactly! He’s an old man. He spends his days walking around the mall with his wife and the other mall walkers. He’s got no more appetite for Icelandic stewardesses.
Not only was Tony incensed by Carmine's criticizing of his manor of dress, but he realized that Johnny Sac was keeping Carmine in the loop down to details as small as Tony's manner of dress.
@@ImranAli-tm3rq As business guides as Carmine was, he really didn't have a lot of respect for Jersey. Him saying this just points that out early on. I can't imagine him saying something like this to the boss of one of the other NYC families.
I noticed that. Carmine was a boss of a major crime Family. He's on the same level as the Farmer's from Jersey. All of Tony's underlings stand up to show respect, Carmine is a old man. He doesn't have to stand up. He showed respect by being there on time and dressed to the nines.
Yet furio was trying to fuck carmella and ralphie just made annoying jokes and was a bit disobedient.. did he kill the horse? Didn't he? No one knows...
Imagine being the NJ mob and having it broadcast every few weeks that you're a glorified crew. The NY families must have had a field day with that one...
Fun fact, James Gandolfini said in an interview that one of the outsiders who helped the show to be more authentic - being in the mob himself told Gandolfini that everything was spot on in the show except the scene at his house when they were having a barbeque/cook out. That was the time the wiseguy told Gandolfini "a don never wears shorts". They found it so significant, that they wrote it into the show. Brilliant.
actually if I remember correctly it wasn't someone who councelled the production, but some random wiseguy who once called up Gandolfini and told him that
Carmine's such a good and clever boss. He knows when to say what, he knows how to assure dominance, he knows Tony's hiding Esplanade stuff so he gets straight to the point, no bullshit, this man's truly a MVP.
Carmine respected Ralph as a useful earner even though he had no warm friendly feelings for him in general. Remember Carmine was willing to clip his own underboss for many years, Johnny Sac, in order to stop big earner Ralphie from getting clipped.
Still it was quite a controversial move from ralph. He had the audacity of patting Carmine and he hasnt reacted, nor anyone said anything (you're not supposed to pat a boss, especially if he's from another family, especially if he's the boss of the biggest family). This lowkey means that Carmine actually had some respect for ralph.
@@adriangrzymski3847 probably both. The writers wanted to include the line because James Gandolfini got a call in the middle of the night from an unknown number that was quiet at first but finally said, "Listen, you’re a great actor, we like what you’re doing, but you got to know one thing: ‘A don never wears shorts.’ ". So the writers put it in there. Probably with the intent you both are saying.

When Tony walks in and Ralph and John go 'Oh" "There he is" it sounds just like when Henry walks out of the courtroom for the first time and all the guys greet him in Goodfellas
craziest part about this is that it shows Johnny Sack tells Carmine about literally anything. Makes me wonder how the shorts even came up in conversation lol
You should have seen him carmine! Standing in shorts non the less. Standing there with his 95 pound mole hanging off his ass! Like we want to see that!
Apparently after they filmed the cookout scene. Actual mobsters went and talked to James Gandolfini. They praised his performance in the show but were VERY critical of him wearing shorts. They even said to him "A Don Doesn't wear shorts."
I had a buddy of mine growing up , his old man was old school like that and would never wear shorts in public or around company. Only when him and the family were alone. It would be the hottest , stickiest day of the year and my man would be rocking slacks at the cookout working the grill.
Supposedly this was not just some random thing. This was said to be actually based on a real-life incident that happened to The Sopranos star James Gandolfini. He was already well received into the series enjoying the personal successes of it and one evening he received a phone call at his personal residence the guy did not really identify ever who he was but he let him know that they liked what he was doing and he was doing great job as an actor but they had to let him know that in real life a mafia don never wear shorts. The actor was disturbed by the phone call to his privacy but he made enough of a mental note to take it to his producer who wrote it into the show and from then on his character was never seen wearing them ever again.
I think Carmines comment about Tony’s shorts was supposed to be his way of telling him that he’s keeping tabs on Tony, in a polite but serious manner. Plus, it’s not really about shorts, but a sly message to say, you represent us now, you have to keep up appearances.
It was mainly to keep tony and Johnny sack at a distance from each other he didn't like them to close he also didn't like his son too close to tony like when he was playing golf with Johnny and lil carmine, lil carmine was just about to big tony up and he said "tony was like a son to me" he wanted to distance lil carmine and tony by pissing lil carmine off he was very clever
Notice how the men laugh at Tony's dumb and nonsensical joke at the end and the women only slightly laugh and just stand there like "wtf?" It goes to show the extent of their sycophancy.
The story goes that someone from the mob actually got in touch with the creators of sopranos when in an earlier season Tony was wearing shorts and told them that a don doesn't wear shorts. So in the next season they included this line.
So for those that don’t know… an actual mafia guy told James gandafino in real like that he saw an episode of tiny wearing shorts and “a don doesn’t wear shorts”. So they used it in this clip. That’s how amazing the writing is on this show
@@mann953 What do you mean? I always like hearing both sides of an argument. From my side, I like a lot his channel and I'm kind of a mafia fanboy lol To me, he seems legit, both as a gangster and as a teacher. But I'm curious to hear your version.
@@alainportant6412 I've just watched that video, he did deny that they knew each other, but he did not deny anything else. He only stressed that Michael co-operated somehow, but didn't say that he put anyone behind bars.
So what the fuck, did Furio happen to bump into four stewardesses staying at the hotel and ask if they wanted to come back to his room and meet some guys? And they went?
I saw some real life gangster, whose name I can’t remember right now, being interviewed about different Soprano scenes and how realistic they were. He said the scene about how “Don doesn’t wear shorts” isn’t a thing in real life.
“A Don doesn’t wear shorts” is actually a token of respect. Carmine was basically saying “we know you’re the defacto boss, and I recognize you as such”
@@cou1202 the whole reason they added this in the show was because they got called by actual real life mobsters from jersey who informed them dons do not wear shorts. So they wrote this in to correct their mistake. The way Tony reacted was written to mimic the way the writer who took the phone call reacted.
“You do any you’ll clean it up!” Whether you’re a shift leader, manager, ceo, mob boss or any title where people work under you that joke will get a laugh! But tell that to your friends and they’ll tell you that shit isn’t funny 😂
@@mariomoso1059 Tony’s basically just making fun of her accent, but the guys are only going hysterical cause he’s the boss of the family and they don’t want to insult him
@@Godfather9814 no, he is not making fun of her accent dummie. He is making fun of the fact that she said Reykjavik, which is the capitol of Island and sounds ugly like someone who pukes.
@@JohnWilkesBased It's a fact. They have almost no immigration since hundreds of years and live on an isolated island in the North Sea with a rising population. If they had last names it would be more obvious. They have to make a gene test before marriage.
@@yannick245 On a per capita basis they have the highest number of chess grandmasters. They have virtually no crime, a successful economy, and a high level of technology. They are doing quite well despite your strange gratuitous remark. Good luck working through whatever issues you have. By the way I wonder if you make similar comments on cultures that have high rates of marriages between cousins. For example, the Pakistanis in the UK.
Tony is pissed at what Carmine said about the shorts, but even more pissed that he knows John is going behind his back to Carmine and giving him even small details about the way he is dressed at a casual family BBQ. I think that's why when the stuff about Ralph mocking Ginny came out, Tony didn't really care and was protective of Ralph.
I think what Carmine means by this phrase is even at a casual gathering there should still be some form of professionalism for “this thing of ours” not necessarily the wear but how casual you gonna go in the entire gathering itself, remember, you are the boss of a underworld organization.
@@johnnyk5385 He definitely did. Carmine is old school and said what he thought - and what he thought was that a Don should not be wearing shorts, even at his own shindig.
I always told this quote to my friend during the summer when it was 100 degrees and humid and I was in pants every single day and he would always be like why tf don’t you wear shorts lmao the don never wears shorts
