Carnage On The Cobblestones! | Tour De France 2022 Stage 5 Highlights

For the first time in four years, the Tour de France heads into ‘Paris-Roubaix country’ to tackle a route that packs in no fewer than 11 bone-rattling cobblestone sectors. Stage 5 could well produce some time gaps between GC contenders or even put them completely out of contention for the Maillot Jaune.

Thanks. Two observations: 1) The race organisers have a lot of questions to answer about that loose hay bale that was knocked into the road by a moto just in front of Roglic. He had zero chance to avoid it. 2) IMO the real hero of the day was WVA who after his crash fought his way back and then led Jonas back to the group that included all the other GC contenders (except Pog) and at one point he and the DS even split the train of TJV riders WVA was leading sending 2 back back to help Roglic salvage as much time as he could. WVA also towed back Ineos. In an interview at the finish with the UK ITV crew Dylan van Baarle (who has literally just finished a few mins before) was shown footage of what WVA did and admitted that neither he nor Thomas nor Pidcock had the strength to get back to the GC group after falling behind due to their own falls and mechanicals. Van Baarle's comment was 'we owe Wout a beer'. It was incredible that in the end so little time was lost by Jonas and that WVA kept yellow.

The Tour should determine who is the best rider, and bike handling from time to time over the cobbles may have its place. But today showed that excitement for one stage like today comes at a cost for the remainder of the tour. Everyone has been waiting for Jumbo vs Pogacar in the mountains, only for that to be snatched away in that panic between pave sectors. Not sure if makes for great bike racing all around. Another Pogacar tour in the basket now?
@julmeissonnier
@julmeissonnier Год назад
Two years ago Pogacar lost 1:40" in a windy stage (and still won the tour), but he learns fast and is unlikely to make that kind of mistake again, and made sure he was upfront on such a challenging day...Sometimes what looks like bad luck in the back is just a result of not being able to hold position when everything speeds up to 60+ km/h before entering the pave...
@mediocrecyclist
@mediocrecyclist Год назад
@@julmeissonnier agreed. Pogacar is a one in a lifetime rider. Sadly, the epic comeback came at the end of the tour, and the fight felt very well alive somehow for him. @@mediocrecyclist I actually think the really serious cycking fans have been waiting for a battle between Pogi and Vingegaard and NOT Roglic. Vingegaard has been so string all season and he has something to prove. He is the MAIN GC for TJV now and I think he has a great shot at it!! Roglic just can't finish things OFF and he finds himself in bad situations and loses time CONSISTENTLY!!! Vingegaard is the one REAL fans want to see step up. He has something to prove to the team and the WORLD!! It reminds me of the Bradley Wiggins/Chris Froome situation in 2013 and Froome had to step up and show the WORLD he was READY!!! Hes,on such amazing form and it reminds me of the Bradley Wiggins/Chris Froome situation! Froome stepped up and showed everyone he should not be overlooked and Vingegaard has been doing this since last year's TDF and he feels it's HIS turn now. I feel that there is some tension on that team coming into the TDF this year. Vingegaard has something to prove!!! Roglic just seems to get himself in bad situations and loses time. It's something that consistently happens to him. Vingegaard is just so strong and ready to show the WORLD he is WORTHY!!! The main question is why TJV didn't wait a few seconds for Primož to connect, since he and Jonas were right behind the group. Then they sent three riders to help, but not the best. These are relevant questions. But was it rational considering the help, Roglič's fall injury and Jonas's only mechanical injury. In any case,should they have slowed down for a few seconds, and Primož would have connected. So WVA and Jonas personaly make Roglic minute difference.
