I absolutely love Kaen and The Carpenters, I have enjoyed listening to a few of their songs over the years but I'm seeing them really for the first time after watching the movie last night and a few of the recorded concerts here on the tube. I turn 50 next year and I can't believe it's taken this long for me to switch and tune into their music Gheee Whiz they were absolutely fabulous artists.

One thing that stands out when watching this, is for all the commercial success they had, and for as broad as they’ve often been criticized for being over the years, you get a sense that it’s still really all about the music for them. They’re really excited about the arrangements and musicianship, and you can see that it’s what drives them. Not the money or the success. That’s more than can be said about many modern and past acts, for whom it’s all about the image. It’s a bit ironic how so many acts are more about the sex and controversy than the music, yet these musical geniuses were criticized back in the day for being “too wholesome”. I miss wholesome, and I miss music.

Nice comment. And I have to emphasize “missing the music.” The Carpenters gave us the best music in every sense. They were consummate professionals. Music of today is absolute noise. I would say that it’s devolved. Rhythm and harmony is replaced with pounding monotonous bass. _And by the way, Karen has the most beautiful big brown eyes ever!_

Richard is often overlooked - but he was/is a brilliant composer/arranger/musician. And Karen - oh, Karen - the PRECISION, the EASE, the TIMBRE and musicality. They are doing, live on stage, with the analog tech of 50 years ago, a dozen back-to-back performances of highly produced album songs. And they are NAILING IT! It's bordering on superhuman. Karen is the best between her amazing voice and drum talent. I've listened to her since the 70s and still do in a world of other musicians. Richard was right at the top with her with his keyboard and vocal skills and the ability to pick out the right compositions. Nothing else makes me feel as much emotion then listening to a Carpenter's song

That you realize that fact is unique. Many musicians in the drummers own group don't realize that along with initiation of a given sound they are also responsible for its cessation! Quite a load to carry sometimes. Many musicians are very lucky that most drummers, especially those that read music, and are multi instrumentalists have a good sense of humor.

This must be one of the best concerts I've seen in my life: I can't stop crying seeing Karen playing those drums like a master and singing beyond incredible. She has become a guide for me as a musician and I'm so grateful she existed, that I can't even express it with words that will be fair enough. And what a great band The Carpenters were. Right after The Beatles in time: they came in the exact moment.

I have played music with my brother for many years. We know what each other is feeling. I think that the way that Karen played the drums was a deep connection to Richard. I could see it in the timing and the rhythm. Something was lost when she was made to give up the drums. While playing the drums, and working with Richard, it seemed that she had found her place. It is sad that she had to give up her comfort zone for the good of the band.

Karen put so much feeling into every song she sang, as though she were living in that moment. True talent to be a lead singer and play the drums and do it so well. Her voice like an "Angel". I applaud her on the early years, she didn't wear makeup. None that can be seen until the later years. She was a natural beauty and taken much too soon. I feel for her brother, talented too and great piano player. I can't imagine the pain of losing Karen had on him. Her parents also. I'll never forget the time and place I was when I heard the News she had died. A life cut short when it should have been a high point in her & Richard's lives. The " CARPENTERS " and Karen will forever live in my heart. R.I.P. KAREN. You will never be forgotten.

The Carpenters made their first and only tour of Australia from May 8 to May 27,1972(A second tour planned for November 1977 was cancelled), playing Sydney, Adelaide, Melbourne and Brisbane. In Sydney, they played a two week "residency" from May 8-20 at the Chevron Hotel in the "Silver Spade Room",a cabaret/restaurant which accommodated about 600 people. With their support act,Denny Brooks, they played two shows each evening at 8.00pm & 11.30pm, which you could see for $6.00Aust($61.00 in 2018).Four more dates were then played, May 22 At Apollo Sport Centre in Adelaide, May 24&25 at Festival Hall Melbourne, where the May 24 show was taped for "The Carpenters in Australia" television special. They then headed north, playing their last Australian show at Festival Hall in Brisbane on May 27.After Australia they headed to Hong Kong,Japan then hence back to the US.Sadly as I was only aged seven in 1972,I was far too young to be able to experience what were clearly some wonderful performances by the group and the AWESOME Karen Carpenter. I do have a vague recollection of seeing this TV special with my family(In glorious, living black & white!)I too would be very interested in the recollections of anyone who attended any of these Australian concerts.

Amazing Richard had to educate the audience on overdubbing harmonies ... so many people judge live talent on how close they replicate studio sound ... well these two and the band for that matter were as talented as musicians come. Karen was looking so healthy and her voice was so mature and strong here. The music oozes out of their souls and runs through their veins. Richard essentially a composer behind the piano and keys with the non verbal cues and motions to the band. Watch the small details .. Karen at 22 doing that swing set (Cinderella)... she looked like a highly trained theatrical performer. Her drumming and ability to sing always flew too far under the radar. Watch her during the medley sets - all the little details She’s also as classy as they come When she’s standing and singing and there’s a solo from an instrument she steps to the side of the stage and yields the spotlight In 2020, the ego of anyone with half her talent would consume the entire spotlight 100% of the time. I can go on forever so I’ll leave it at that

I agree. Not in my lifetime either and I'm turning 60 years old this month. But there's never been another drummer/singer like Karen Carpenter. She is truly not given the credit she deserves for being a drummer/singer, there is none better. Heck, there's none better if you just say singer without the drummer part, but she was both. And she didn't just slam the drums while she was singing. She's actually playing professional rudiments, flams and etc., like the greats, Joe Morello, Buddy Rich, and etc. She loved Jazz and it shows in her precision playing.
