Hey gang, hope you're all doing well.
This episode, I'm looking at a stupidly rare game, Castle of Doom, a talking board game from V Tech, yeah, V Tech! This is certainly an unusual one from an unusual manufacturer. Sword fights, dragons, secret passages, treasure and monsters! Sounds like it should be good right?!
Apologies for the slow upload, it's been a mental month with family and personal stuff. STILL house hunting, gotta find a place with a decent attic space right ;) I have around 8 reviews written ready for filming, a good few Modern Classics, some vintage reviews too (that I've been working super hard on, seriously, it's required me learning a new skill to give this upcoming review it's proper justice) aaaaand been working too another week long special. So even though there's been fewer episodes this month, there's been a ton of behind the scenes and prep going on. I hope you enjoy what I put out :)
DFTA recently passed its 4th anniversary and just want to say a big thank you to all of you who've stuck with me so long :D
keep gaming
Luke

Good video!!! I think this game was meant for very little kids (like 3-8)...but more specifically, little kids who had bigger siblings that played Dungeons and Dragons. Those older siblings would never allow their baby brother to join in on that game...plus, it is too hard anyway. So, now the little kiddies have their own easy and audibly and visually stimulating game. Anyway, adios and have a great week.

You had this as a kid? Did you enjoy playing it? You're the first person I've met who ever owned this as a kid so I'm interested in your opinion on it

Castle of Doom looks like a really cool game. It's what HeroQuest could have been.

I found your video on Castle of Doom while trawling the internet for help in fixing my own game. I've had absolutely zero luck and am devastated. I know you didn't seem to rate the game much in your video, but as a very lonely child I spent HOURS playing this game over and over again all by myself. I've kept the game all this time (I'm now coming up to 39 and I had the game new in 1990!). It no longer works as I seem to have played it to death and I wondered if you'd be willing to part with yours?

This is the sort of game that would catch my attention, and so I appreciate your informing us! Too bad-itʼs so attractive yet so empty, an electronic Candy Land. Little youngʼuns deserve games built for them; and even if weʼre not the target audience, we big young‐at‐heartʼuns deserve to have fun playing along with them (or, yes, just among ourselves 🙂). I also enjoy the title font, but I canʼt help thinking the emphasis a little odd: I half‐expect to be able to jet over to England and tour the Castle ‘Of’, whose masters once bitterly rivaled the lords of the Château « De » and the Schloß »Von«! This game is not afraid to be quirky, and I do appreciate its being a little different. Rubberʼs not great for longevity (my first rubber chicken rotted away long ago), but I like the piecesʼ flexibility because-why not? Thereʼs a toylike appeal that I would like to see in more games. (But silicone could be better.) And donʼt fret about the schedule slowdown-we understand, and when a new episode does come, itʼs like a q̶u̶i̶f̶f̶ o̶f̶ f̶r̶e̶s̶h̶ h̶a̶i̶r̶ whiff of fresh air!

It's not that there's something with components that COULD work...it's that the game is literally programmed in a way that it dictates everything, it takes the control away from players and I can see it getting monotonous with the wrong crowd. It certainly favours certain players and punishes others and when obstacles can't be beat because something is stopping that...makes it a pretty unfair game. Yeah presentation, it looks great and it absolutely suckered me in with it's 3d plastic board, promise of sound effects and interactive game play. But...I mean, I wouldn't call a light switch interactive because I press the button on the wall :D and that's more or less what we have here. I'm amazed too that the rubber figures hadn't perished in the box, probably being away from UV light and drying out has helped there.

@@downfromtheattic I agree: I want to play a game, not have a game play _me._ The components look cool, and while Iʼd be tempted to leave out the batteries and invent some other game to play with the board and pieces, itʼs probably better just to play something else altogether. Maybe one of these days someone will recycle the concepts (if not the rubber) and release a similarly themed electronic board game thatʼs a real winner.

Now that I am watching the video on the computer I can recognize the voice and sound effects being quite similar to Legends of Zagor.
@downfromtheattic
@downfromtheattic 3 года назад
Not played Legend of Zagor but have seen Matt Wilkin's review, yeah there is a similar sound to it. I know there's a limited amount of space on those old sound chips but I think the intonation of the voice can really do a lot to making a game work. Like how omega virus' computerised voice plays to the theming or the jolly butler sound of Mystery Mansion, defo makes a big difference

Yeah it was at 48 I think but since having played it with 4 players, it showed it problems massively. A friend of mine had made it streets ahead with the game up until the treasure, then it kept telling him to "stay" meaning he hadn't got the treasure. The game allowed each of us to collect the treasure and pass him and although he caught up, he didn't win. He complained that there was no luck to it the game just decided to screw him over and having sat there with the game on my own simulating a 4 player game again...yeah, it absolutely does this. I take into account how my friends and family react to games when it comes to my reviews and also my placement of games on the top 50 and this one...yeah, it's not on top 50 anymore. Just means that better games have made it on there ;)

@@downfromtheattic I actually had this same thought when I saw it first mentioned. The game seems to program the entire game, then just waits for the users to click 'play', regardless of user experience. That is a shame, because all the sound effects and great pieces could have made for a great kids game. V-Tech = Vile-Tech

@@downfromtheattic I would enjoy seeing the programing of this old game. I would also enjoy if it were copied into a modern computer and that computer would then simulate 1000 games of this in a row. Then show how it simulates those games. It would be nice to see if the game really randomizes players movements. Or. If the game writes a code from A to Z and just runs the player through it. Be cool to see if the movements are "randomly" generated separately from the penalty spaces. The computer would be able to show if the same games are generated time after time or if the experience is really different each play. I think knowing if it is different each play would really make the game better. You could explain it to the players. That it actually is random in some sense all though be it a roll and move at heart.

That I need to repair to a point of reliability at the moment. Previous owner left a battery in it and it corroded the terminals in there. I can can do one of two things, replace the terminals or add a new battery compartment. I’ve got it working, but it needs to be more dependable, I’ve had it pack in working halfway through the game
