These places are better than fishing from the Bank at Weldon Boat Ramp! Shad and Rockfish are Always Here, even In June, July, August. Also a great Place for Top Water Action!
We always fished the tailrace, some of the best fishing for all species, it takes time to learn it, especially now with most of the old timers gone and very few fishing it like they did years ago. I walked the cable hundreds of times to fish the first discharge unit at the dam, caught thousands of stripers out of it and out in front of it until they closed all access to it. Walked the cable back across floating 10 fish limits of rockfish across on a rope way back in the day so many times it was crazy, hundreds of them every year, they stay in there year round. We fished from the bank down there in the winter, light bon firrs to stay warm and would catch plenty of fish with it that cold, the ice would get so thick on the rod tips the line wouldn't cast until we held it over the heat from the fire! Crazy days of fishing, part of living in RR, wouldn't trade it for nothing in the world!
Great videos and info Jeff! I've never been Striper fishing nor have my 2 sons (17 and 15yrs old) I plan on taking them up to Weldon boat ramp this Sunday but i think I'm going to try these spots. They seem pretty easy to find and I've never been to the area.
Man I was just there before you made this video. I was getting out at boat ramp when the boat you saw under the bridge was putting in. You may have seen me somewhere. I was on a big fishing kayak with motors. I was marking stripers all on the graph but nothing would bite this morning.
Thanks for more great info. As a newbie to striper fishing on the Roanoke, these vids are very, very helpful! With it being earlier in the season(??) would it be better to try some bank fishing at Weldon now, and then move up river to Gaston boat ramp in a week or so?
Just found your channel…. Thank you for this video….. I live in central Va and would love to come down to fish off those banks…I have heard of Weldon but never been down .. I don’t really want to tear up a prop in the river so the bank it is…. Is there a season for catch and release stripers?
