Catharsis - Fiddle Tutorial!

Several months ago I was asked if I could make a tutorial for Catharsis by Amy Cann, so here it is! This is a really popular fiddle tune in the United States, and it's really fun to play! I hope this helps you learn the song on the violin! =)

This tutorial goes over the basic tune for Catharsis. I've been receiving a lot of comments asking about how to increase the tempo. Because one of the easiest ways to learn how to play faster is through repetition and gradually increasing the tempo, I've added additional tempo run-through versions at the end of the video. I hope you have fun learning the melody! =)

Your tutorial method is the best I've seen on the internet. Putting the scroll and showing your fingering closest to the camera is most helpful. You have great talent and I'm learning fiddle tunes the quickest from your videos and how you break down the songs, and your explanations are fantastic. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

I enjoyed learning this tune from you. Thanks, too, for adding the several faster tempos, at the end; that makes it more of a challenge as I learn the tune better and get faster, hopefully, with time.

Hello and thank you for posting lessons on you tube I do appreciate it. I have some sheet music for this real. Notes that you play are different than what is on the sheet music that I have. Would you happen to have any sheet music that you are using

I usually learn all of these tunes by ear, and I rarely use sheet music unless I'm in a major rush and need to fill in for someone else when I'm not familiar with their band's repertoire. I don't have sheet music for this tune... Part of the reason why I'm making these tutorials is so that people can learn how to play them by ear. =)

Very nice tutorial - but a metronome would have been helpful ! I recommend using one and if possible let it play not only the crotchets but also the quavers. in the b part make sure that you do´nt think "triplets" - just play the quavers. And make sure that after all those offbeat notes the run from the g upwards starts on a 3 and is on the beat again. And don´t play the second ending she is talking about - it does not fit into the pattern.

So maybe this is a stupid question: how is the song in Gm, if the first note is not Gm? I'm used to playing guitar where the first chord is usually the key the song is in... I'm confused on how to tell what key a song is in on violin other than by sound.

I wish I could give online lessons individually to people...but it is really hard for me to find time for one-on-one lessons.. =/ I'm having a hard time keeping up with videos, comments, and email, while having my full-time job... Individual lessons would be too much.. =( I'm sorry... But I hope these online tutorial videos might help, and there are lots of other RU-vid channels with lots of resources for learning the violin! =)
