This movie is SOO bad that when my brother’s friends recorded some parts to send to friends to laugh about and the movie theater worker caught them, he let them do it because “it’s a garbage movie anyway” I was dead
Cats is the last movie that I saw in theaters because of Covid so now I have to live with the fact that if theaters don’t come back, the last experience I ever got was, was CATS
As a musical theatre person: I’m sorry. We didn’t want this. No one wanted this. Cats works better in its original theatre format, but it was already kind of a meme. Idk how this happened.
@Mani it could’ve worked. It really could’ve worked so well. They should’ve done more material costuming instead of relying on CGI completely. They also should’ve NOT ADDED IN EXTRA PLOT THAT JUST MADE THE STORY EVEN MORE CONFUSING!!! I haven’t even seen the movie because of how disappointed everyone was over it, I haven’t even actually seen the play nor the old movie unfortunately. However I know a lot about it.
@@strawburrymilk195 i actually saw cats in a theater and it was.... weird yeah the plot was odd to me and i wasn't a big fan- it is kinda a meme tho i just never saw the movie because i sat through cats which wasn't bad just out there but no way am i subjecting myself to something that bad
I saw a tweet that said the plot is "they introduce themselves until one of them gets permission to die" and I thought it was a joke but NOW I realize that that was literally it. I thought it was a JOKE
I mean tbf the musical is based on a series of very, and I mean VERY, loosely connected poems. Basically the story of Cats is that all the street and feral cats have such a rough horrible life. To them being able to die is like being released from a living hell. However the 2019 movie added in extra plot that made the story even more confusing and hard to follow. IIRC there is no dance contest at all in the original. The contest is literally based on them telling their life stories.
@@CheshieD I really wish that ppl watched the original musical. It’s all here on RU-vid and it was my childhood. Then they can truly understand why it’s so fucking bad. Like rum tug tugger and jennie Annie dots are iconic and cats RUINED THEM
Here’s my theory : it was a money laundering scheme. It was never meant to a good movie or particularly bad. It just needed to look like it cost a lot of money on the books.
Grim The Ghastly Watch Black Nerd Comedy review of Cats. Not only is it hilarious but he will convince you to watch the movie just because it is that awful it has to be experienced.
It's the "trainwreck effect", even though something is bad, we can't look away. It's the same reason people watch Jackass, horror films, or the News. We like to see how awful something is bc it makes us feel better about our own lives.
When I went to see this with my friend a lady actually came up to us and told us to be quieter during the movie, like she was enjoying it and having a regular movie going experience. I don't understand how she was able to watch it that way but i respect her and i hope she's doing okay because holy shit
as a theatre nerd, cats as a musical was also a fever dream- also, the actors literally went to cat school aND FOR WHAT- THEY DIDN'T EVEN LOOK/ACT LIKE CATS
@@sanityisrelative if it was made by furries, they would have made it way more visually appealing, there is a LOT of people in the community who do some really good character design.
Kennie: "It seemed like every person, at least on RU-vid, that reviewed the movie kind of all start their video of them just kind of staring aimlessly into the abyss in confusion and mental dismemberment." Me: *replays the video from the beginning to see the exact same thing* "Its happening, ITS HAPPENING"
Mega Milk I can confirm that it is in fact an adventure, it was weirder then watching midsummar, I can’t even describe. Kinda fucked me up, especially the cockroach bit 😑😳😟
My mom forced me to watch this, twenty minutes in she dragged me out of the theater into the car and said “I hope you can forgive me for torturing you with this horror cgi film”
That body horror, is there anything else even like it? I think id rather watch Charlie get decapitated in Hereditary for an hour straight than watch Cats the movie.
So I feel like the trailer came out around the time IT was in theaters. And my reaction when I saw the trailer was that the cats were creepier than Pennywise(not even IT's fault. Just...CATS for...literally making the cats look so horrifying.
someone said that they pushed back making a wicked movie in order to make cats and if that's true, what you said about everyone losing their jobs is even more valid...
I watched this movie in my house with my brother. And while I still could’ve paused it, we lasted maybe fifteen minutes until we couldn’t stand it anymore. In the first five minutes, I started to hysterically laugh in a literal breakdown as I was so confused, horrified and in that visceral rigid pain Kennie talks about. And we had to stop at the scene with the lazy cat that enslaved mice and cockroaches to dance for her. I almost cried because I was almost in fight or flight. I was hyperventilating I was getting chills and goosebumps and NOT in a good way. And I went back to the move a few days afterward because I had a death wish, and I couldn’t last after Jason Derulo’s horrific strip dancing excuse of a song. I now practically have PTSD from how awful this was.
the rules for musicals is supposed to be "when they are too emotional to talk, they sing, and when they're too emotional to sing, they dance" but idk what the fuck emotion people are feeling they they need to break out into 'bustopher jones'
Kyanna Holness That was the worst thing about the movie for me! I started getting a headache because the proportions of everything kept changing from frame to frame
I couldn't keep track of the size of anything and came home and the size of my actual cat disorientated me. I also hoped to never see a cockroach or a mouse ever again in my life.
The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt actually made a very similar jab about the Cats Broadway show. It's all just introductions... and then it's over. I remember being bored out of my mind as a child having to watch it.
It's definitely not a show meant for children to be entertained by, but it's a concept musical like SIX, Avenue Q, or Company. They don't follow storylines as much as they follow a theme and send a message.
I personally love the musical Cats and enjoyed it as an older kid and an adult, but it does NOT work for film. As someone else said here, it's more of a concept musical. It's meant to be more of an experience and just to enjoy the music and performances. No narrative plot whatsoever. Lol
We can’t even say that they didn’t advertised it. I was seeing ads everywhere RU-vid, tumblr, Twitter, Instagram, but it still manage to flop. So it was just that bad I guess lmao
JΔE the budget was 95 million and they made 17,090,175... fucking 50 shades of grey had a 40 million budget and made 571 million dollars. It was very bad.
I just wanna say for anyone that doesn’t know: there’s a reason they didn’t just make them all actual animated cats and instead went for the horrifying approach they did. It’s because the original Cats is more focused on the singing and the dancing than the story. It’s pretty much a ballet. The idea was to capture the elegance of cats and their body movements through the art of dance. There’s a vague story but it’s more focused on those aspects. Hence, making it a movie without actual dancing would defeat the entire purpose of the musical, and singing cats would just look weird. So, they made an attempt to make the characters appear similar to the on stage actors, who have similar costumes on. The problem was while this worked with a stage and costumes, there’s just no way to translate that character design into a movie where it’s believable and has a flowing story as well. As a play, Cats is completely a masterpiece. But it should NEVER be made into a movie, there’s just no way to do it correctly and still capture the whole point of the original. Edit: Also wanna say there are MANY other things wrong with that hell spawn of a movie, much more than just the cgi, but I hear people often saying they should have just done actual cats and it annoys me.
I wish they would have made a 2d animation though. It could have been great! I also see no resemblance to the stage costumes who actually WORK and these ... whatever hell spawned these creatures form the movie.
@@AkephalosXx I think one of the reasons they didn't (and I think one of the reasons Spielberg didn't finish his 2D version in the '90s) was because T.S. Eliot, the poet who wrote the book that the musical is based off of, refused to give Disney the rights in the '70s/80s because he didn't want them to be animated "pussy cats". Andrew Lloyd Weber got the rights because he wasn't going to do that. I assume, but I don't have anything to confirm this, Hooper wanted to stick to that as either a respectful thing or a "let's see if it'll work" thing.
If they did the makeup where they drew their noses by connected the nostrils, maybe did something catlike to the teeth maybe it wouldn't have been in the uncanny valley
1. I love that as I was thinking “It would be so cool if she included the friends opinions” she inserted voice clips. That’s dope 2. As a fan of the musical I totallyyy agree
My friends and I drove 20 miles to see this movie at like 10 pm so all of us could experience this together after work and we all came out as changed people, and not for the better 😂
Ok so cats is respectable as a “dance musical”. So when they said a movie i was kinda weirded out bc some things can’t be translated well into cinema. But like if you were watching a ballet- It’d be a pretty edgy ballet. But it’s a terrible movie. I mainly went for Idris Elba.
brie joy THEY DID JELLICLE SONGS FOR JELLICLE CATS DIRTY- the original cats were all excited and energetic and they were just so *flat* and it made me so angry
@Melody Song yeah i completely agree. I’m a musical theater geek myself and that’s why i was a little weary bc cinama acting and theater acting is very different. Theater is so over the top so yeah
As a theatre kid who’s never seen cats until the movie, I was excited to see it.... my aunt told me right as the movie started not to expect too much,😭 it literally sucked my soul and I couldn’t look away, at the end I asked her what was the movie about and she said “ I’ve been in the arts for 30 years and we’ve still to this day do not know the plot of cats”
This is really late, so no one's probably going to see this, but the original musical was based on a book of poems called Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats by T.S. Elliot. There are individual poems for each cat, and Andrew Lloyd Webber turned them into songs as part of a songwriting exercise, and then strung them together into a musical, which is why it feels like a string of introductions. There were a few songs that didn't come from the book (like Memory or part of the Jellicle song). Also, the word 'Jellicle' is complete nonsense. It doesn't actually mean anything. Jellicle cats are fictional. But yeah, it sounds stupid. Just thought I'd clear up some stuff. I hate the film too, but it's a little unfair to push all this onto the film when really it was the musical's original premise. It was designed to be a visual spectacle, not to make money. The film shouldn't have been made...ever.
Yeahhh... it's a concept musical. It's great for the stage, but film, for the most part, heavily relies on and does best with narrative plots. Of all of the musicals, Cats was certainly one that had no business being adapted. So, so many others would have made better choices.
Yes thank you I came to the comments to literally see if someone had written this! Absolutely love the musical as it's so unique and that uniqueness is now been shat on by the film industry
@@sulsulii810 I’ve actually learned a bit about that since I made that comment, and it’s really cool looking at the difference in format between opera and musicals!
@@leesegrmr4579 Oh that awesome! I mainly said it because recently I explained the difference to my mom after learning it from Sideways, a really awesome RU-vid channel
In 10 years, a TV commercial will run: "Have you or a loved one experienced trauma due to exposure to CATS? If so, our lawyers can help you file a class-action lawsuit. you may not get your life back, but we can...Actually, no that's it, you may not get your life back."
I'm a theatre junkie. I saw the original film Cats in the 90s as a kid and love it to this day. And the talent of that original cast was unforgettable. And tbh nothing compares to it imo as far as other casts. So when I tell you how mortified I was when this was announced as a live action movie. I knew it was going to be bad, but like. The moment I saw the CGI cat people, I legit cried. Because theatre people get so much shit already and this was going to taint us even more in society for being silly and werid. The sad thing is that the original is really cute and unique and fun and talent filled. But no one outside of theatre will ever watch it because of this damn movie. I promise you this show is NOTHING like this. They do introduce characters but its literally so different in the best way and makes sense. PS I love Jennifer Hudson but that rendition was not it sis. Elaine Page. Look her up and you will see what theatre talent really is.
I saw cats opening weekend. By the end, half of the audience talked out, the remaining ppl were having full-volume conversations amongst each other. There were also kids playing tag in the theater
Xenobat I was just about to comment this lmao. I currently own 6 cats and have been a furry my whole life (thanks Looney Tunes and MLP) and I have been avoiding this movie like the fucking plague
I've had acid badtrip once in my life and I legitimately thought I'd die during it and it STILL wasn't half as bad as the experience of watching this movie
I've seen so many bad movies because I love making jokes about them with my brother. We could not do that with this movie. When we saw the credits I felt physical relief like the torture just ended. We just sat there in silence so happy we actually made it out alive. So I truly believe you this caused physical pain for you because this felt like I was near literal death
the original cats has LESS plot than the movie, you just introduce cats until one gets permission to die, the movie reworks it a bit to have an ounce of conflict and plot
Hi y’all, I’m a sound designer that specializes in musical theatre and plays. The first piece of advice I was given when I started was “no matter how much money they offer, never work Cats. Ever.” Those who’ve worked the musical... well.. I haven’t heard from them since
I’m seriously not going to see this because: 1. I’ve always wanted to see the musical live! 2. It’ll ruin my childhood! 3. I fear for my mental health.....
Me too. I heard so many good things about the musical but when I saw the trailer I knew it was going to be bad but I just couldn't fathom how bad it could be. Kennie a real one. She sacrificed her mental and physical health for us
@@alexisviolet1480 it truly is a great musical, but it's the worst musical to adapt as a movie because it just doesn't have a plot?? It's great as a stage performance because you get to enjoy the dancing, the singing and the amazing costumes but as a movie??? It's just weird :/
Valeria Rossini I agree. I think that’s something that many people don’t understand? A lot of people who review it don’t know much about the original which is a shame. It’s definitely not good for a movie format
I went back to watch this and her intro about 2020 was haunting, every time I see people in videos just before the pandemic being so upbeat about the year to come it low key breaks my heart
The introduction songs gave me the same energy as the Winx Club when the girls used to dance for such a long time while transforming into fairies to fight😂😂 the bad guys.
The cats caught my tongue because I literally had no words, the movie was THAT bad. A pile of cat Shit. Poor Jason, Taylor, rebel, and those other old actors that I love but forgot their names. I also had no idea what the duck was going on because I couldn’t understand them and towards the end I WAS WAITING!! Waiting for it to end!! But the song kept going! I relate to that! Omg
No joke, when my dad took my sister and I to the movies and told us when we got there that we were seeing Cats, I had a random anxiety shockwave thing despite, at the time, genuinely wanting to watch the movie. It’s like my body knew that a mistake was being made
The point of the Cats play is to be a live experience of fast paced songs and good dancers doing good choreography. So it's more like a general show as opposed to a normal play. It's also a very divided topic in the Broadway community.
yeah... i have mixed feelings about the broadway version. like, the songs are good, i guess, but the plot is nonexistent and everything else is just eh
I never even knew what the plot was growing up, but I absolutely love the original musical anyway. I think it's just nice to watch without thinking about any plot. I love the choreo and the music. The movie kind of ruined it
I draw characters a lot and read a few character designers opinion on this, my theory is pretty simple: the problem is that the ears are on top of their head, not on the sides. The "hairy elf ear" route would have worked 10000% better. Plus the nose as was said before. And the frigging hands of course...
So, what I’m getting from this review “There was this dreadful feeling in my heart” “There were 16 people. 8 walked out. I wish I was one of them” “Who was this made for????” “F*ck Jason Derulo”
I saw Cats as a joke with my friend. There were two other girls in the theatre. All four of us were laughing the entire time, no matter what was happening on screen. I was terrified but laughing through my fear. Thankfully a tornado warning interrupted our movie and we got to do face masks together in a long storm shelter with a bunch of strangers in a mall. That was more fun than seeing Cats. We preferred being crowded by strangers to sitting through Cats. Horrifying.
I was thinking Hamilton. You can just listen to the soundtrack and the only part of the plot you miss is Laurens' death. But, you know, watching Hamilton doesn't send you into an existential crisis.
I've seen this movie maybe three times now because I too love to torture myself with cringey movies. So I went to the theater to go see it as well. I had no idea about the original musical or anything and I didn't know that it was literally a musical musical so when they just kept singing and singing and singing I was getting so annoyed it felt like you couldn't catch a break. There was barely any speaking in between so it was just overwhelming. The other times I've seen this movie is because I am forcing everyone I know to watch this movie because of how terrible it is. We actually play it at my job just so we could have people come in and make fun of it and laugh, I work at a movie theater by the way. That was a lot of fun and I recently just watched it again because I want all of my coworkers to see how terrible it is. But I think what makes this movie even more terrible is the fact that you could tell that literally everyone thought they were going to be in some sort of revolutionary piece of artwork. it's so funny especially in hindsight to go back and watch the plethora of videos they made introducing the cast members of them talking about it and the set and just everything because they really were marketing this to be some sort of beautiful piece of artwork that everyone was going to enjoy. And I think that is what makes it so much funnier and just cringe-worthy because they really thought they were doing something. They really thought they had something there that was amazing and that just really wraps all this awfulness into the perfect terrible terrible movie it is lmaooo
I know I'm late to the party, but I think the reason that cats worked so well in the theater, was because it was an inversion of form for musicals. It works on pure spectacle and sensation. There's all these sexy people in sexy cat makeup, doing incredible choreography, they're singing in perfect three part harmonies. Every aspect of the production is visually intriguing. The quality of the show is in contrast to the absolute nonsense of the plot. Being in the theater is an experience of joining the people around you, the performers interact with the audience. Even though you don't understand, you're invested in their story. Even the plot structure is reversed. Instead of beginning with the main character, it spends so much time just telling you who all these cats are and what this event means to them. and then in introduces grisabella, and because we've spent so much time world building, we know that this is incredibly important to her, and we empathize even though we don't understand. Which makes it wild to me that the movie got everything wrong on every possible level, clearly nobody at any point in the production understood the original appeal. And they created a movie that people watch together as a kind of trauma bonding experience. It feels almost cosmic.
