SUBSCRIBE Learn how tile the right way
Silicone is the correct choice for your tile shower corners, tub joint or anywhere tile meets a tile in a corner or another type of material. You never want to just grout in your corners, this can create problems, at the very least you will have cracked corners, at the worst it will cause your tile job to fail. Silicone sealant is the correct choice, look up ANSI EJ171 for all the details. An alternative Siliconized Acrylic Caulk, but it is not as flexible and will not last anywhere near as long as a Silicone caulk joint will. Silicone is much more flexible and has a much stronger bond, however it is not easy to clean and can leave a mess if you don't know the secret how to get it done quick and easy. Unlike acrylic caulks, which can be easily cleaned with water, silicone caulk needs a bit more care and know how to get a professional looking clean even joint. In this video I demonstrate an easy method that with a little practice will have you caulking with silicone in no time. \

I like to use the Cramer Fugi for tooling down all my caulks and silicone. I think it's the best one out there. It gives more of an angled tooling shape than a concave, which is why I've been weaning of using fingers to tool down the silicone. I've also used Amway LOC cleaner spray, and also Caulk EZ in a spray can to spray over the bead of silicone before I tool it. Both work out great.
@krehbein
@krehbein 5 лет назад
Agreed, fugi type tools have made caulking a lot easier for me on various projects.

fugi also makes the bead so strong and holds up way better
@tonymanero5544
@tonymanero5544 Год назад
Spraying soap water or mineral spirits will keep the edges from fully adhering tothe tile. The Fugi or knock-off shaper will produce a pyramid caulk line with edges that are up to 8 times stronger than the concave shape of a finger or popsicle stick. RU-vid is full of less than excellent techniques like this one, which is convenient but not the best. You have apply your high school education to figure it out.

Was about to mess up on caulking by using the methodology of sanded caulk even though I had purchased the silicone caulk like you used in this video. Thankfully I remembered your videos on tile installation and was hoping you had one on caulking with silicone caulk. You didnt let me down. Going to follow the instructions on your video and am expecting good results. Thanks again.

I learn a lot watching your videos. My only comment is to be careful with spraying denatured alcohol. The stuff is lethal when atomized by a spray bottle. You may not have an issue with a once or twice diy job but doing it full time it will catch up with you. Please wear a mask if you use it frequently. Reference the SDS for more information.

ANSI EJ171, movement joints sealed with a flexible sealant. Grout will crack every time, the corners are a maintenance joint, they will have to be done over every few years. It is not to make it waterproof, the shower under it is already watertight, if it was done right.
@ndsrocks1

Ive never been a fan of the look of color match silicone. Used Tec when I did. Last couple years I've been using color match siliconized caulk in corners when I grout, then come back with clear silicone over it in the wet areas. Always felt soap and alcohol impeaded adhesion. I like to see how others do it though. Sal is a pro as always
@MoneyManHolmes

You have to make sure the joint is full before spraying, because any gaps will not adhere if alcohol gets in there like you said.

That's a great tip i wished i had viewed before i caulked. But alcohol breathing is actually toxic to humans and spraying it will create small droplets that will stay airborne, so the idea is great for the job but not so much for your health.

Yes, always leave room for movement.

@@SalDiBlasi Thank you sir. I realized shortly after posting this question that I was so concerned with keeping water out that I was neglecting the bigger problem of keeping water (trapped) in. So, I deduced that grouting corner would not allow for movement while caulking would allow movement but it would also prevent drainage (should water ever get behind wall grout). So, leaving the gap empty was likely the best course of action as it allows for wall/floor movement while allowing any moisture trapped between wall and tile to migrate between floor and wall. I can see how this is helpful in a shower with weep holes in the drain. But under a (noncommercial space) sink without a floor drain is the assumption that moisture penetration will be infrequent and nominal allowing for evaporation to be an effective mode of water elimination?

@@SalDiBlasi are you also caulking the gap between the shower wall tile and the shower floor? I don't see you doing this. If you've waterproofed the mortar bed and walls using kerdi membrane, would you be trapping water behind that siliconized joint as it enters the grout joints in the wall assembly or would that water just evaporate out of the assembly the same way it entered? I guess leaving an unsightly gap there is not an option aesthetically? Grout in that joint would crack inevitably. What exactly do you do at that joint!?

Hi Sal, I am currently DIY remodeling my bathroom solely from your videos! Was looking at your caulking choice link , and it gives a choice of 100% silicon sanded or unsanded. I would assume for my 1/16-1/8 joints use Unsanded but for the larger floor joints should a sanded silicone be used or just use unsanded for all corner and floor to tub joints? Thanks for the videos, I might just pull this job off myself and save about 15k!

Depending on the brand, sanded my not be avaliable. In any case choose the one that matches the texture of your Grout if possible

Sal, another excellent video. My question is why exactly are you applying denatured alcohol (or soapy water/glass cleaner)? What is the reasoning behind this?
@SalDiBlasi
@SalDiBlasi 4 года назад
It is a lubricant so the excess does not stick to the tile as you tool it.

Great video again Sal. How large (or small) should the gap/space be between the shower walls and shower floor? Is it 1/8" or 1/4" or anywhere in between those two values.
@SalDiBlasi
@SalDiBlasi 4 года назад
Minimum 1/8, recommended is 1/4, but depending on the install 1/4 can look way to big.

Sal - Can you apply silicone over silicone? I used the caulk sparingly and it created a gap in the shower joint. I was hoping to just go over it with some new silicone which would go over some of the existing.

Thanks Sal, great content as usual! I'm wondering if you have any tips for caulking around the base of a toilet where it's difficult to reach behind with a gun and hard to see. I usually put some caulk on my fingertip, reach around, the push and pray, then clean with a moist towel. There's gotta be a better way
@ronvarney5457
@ronvarney5457 3 года назад
I'm a plumber and you shouldn't caulk in toilets except for on first floor as basement toilets but never on second floor or above the reason is when the wax ring fails if it is caulked in it will not be seen in time to prevent water damage to that floor or finished ceilings but to answer your original? use a caulk squeeze tube instead of the caulk gun it gives you a lot more control around the toilet then use a wet table cloth cotton towel time cleave up the excess

I would advise not to use soapy water because if it gets into a gap in the silicone it wont seal properly best action is not to use any at all I use a toll like tours and it cleans the joints perfectly and i dont use alcohol or soapy water. Im tiling almost as long as you over here in Ireland and never had an issue with doing this with the need for alcohol or soap :) Also did you fix that gap under the window :P
@SalDiBlasi
@SalDiBlasi 5 лет назад
That is why you put the bead of silicone and then spray, the gap is filled and the tool will shape it, and the liquid will keep the silicone from sticking to the unwanted places. So if you use water and dish soap, just a few drops, start from the bottom and work up, so you don't have that problem.

At 9:50 there’s a big gap that you made wet. Doubt that the silicone stuck very well to that

For a new install of tile, Do u grout the corners first then apply the silicone on top of it? Or you just silicone it. It was kind of hard to tell from the video if you grouted the corners first then caulked it. And I didn’t see in any of your videos on how to properly finish a corner. Thank you

I have talked about movement joints many times. All changes of plain or where tile meets a dissimilar material have to have a soft joint. So no grout in the corners.

Hi Sal! Great video! Do you caulk up and over the shower curb Against the wall or put grout in those joints? In my case a shower glass door will end up butting up against the grout line and not sure which one is best for that spot. In your video it appears to have already been done, so I’m assuming it was grouted there. Thanks for your help!

One question in two parts. Are you certain the alcohol used doesn’t breakdown the silicon over time. Plus I thought it necessary for silicone to have some purchase on the tiles and not just in the gap in case tiny gaps appear. 🤔

This works very well, just be sure the joint is filed before you spray, The alcohol evaporates very quickly.
