All comparison videos need to be like this one. Just perfection. I can see the classic G12-65 is quite dark but surprisingly the Redback was VERY similar. The Creamback sounds like a more hi fi version of the classic 65
After watching this excellent video, I like my G12-65s in my open back 212 Zilla Cab even more. I think the G12 65 is one of the speakers ever built. Besides individual preferences, it is one of the best for sure. For me certainly THE best.

Thank you so very much for putting this together. I've had my finger on the trigger for some Classic Lead 80s or the Heritage 65W. I don't find the scooped sound of these two speakers very pleasing. I'm keeping my K-100s in one of my 4x12s cabs (love them) and my Vintage 30s in my other 4x12 to have a mix of separate cabs. Mostly this is to avoid any phasing issues that may arise by combining them in the same enclosures structure. I don't particularly like Vintage 30s alone, but in a mix of separate speaker cabinets with my K-100s there amazing. I power my two 4x12 cabs with 2 Diezel Herberts (Mk1 & Mk2). Thank you again for this wonderful video and the time you put into producing it. You just saved me dropping ~$500 to Celestion for another quad of "test" drivers.
I love the G12-65! I have a 2x12 cab (V Boutique Vumble) with them and they sound glorious! I bought that cab specifically to use with a Hughes & Kettner Puretone. Watching the Zilla cab videos help solidify the speaker choice. Thanks guys for the great videos!!!
I'm currently using two vintage G12 65s in a 2x12 closed back, stereo and it rips, for metal sounds these speakers compress the sound in a very distinctive way, perhaps not the best choice for downtuned modern stuff but it could work in this departament with the right amp too.
The cl80 with a G12-65 is one of my favourites too, two very complimentary speakers... actually you picked some great speaker mixes there. I don'tthink many people would have picked the redback with the 65 but I think they are a perfect mix. Thanks for watching.
I’d be surprised if they did, I know Eric has some Marshall jcm 800 cabs in the studio, his favorite is a beat up straight cab with greenbacks. I know pat is partial to the ev12Ls
Interesting. I'm a fan of the G1265, but in previous demos, I haven't been the biggest fan of the way that it mixes with other speakers. Here it seems to sound good with the various GF12H varieties, the CL80, the 65 Creamback, and a few others, but I'm wondering if you don't lose a bit of its peculiar growl when you combine it. In contrast, something like a G12M Greenback or a V30 imparts its personality onto everything, and a G12T-75 has a little notch in the mids where a lot of the other Celestions will fit right in.
HI Josh, I'm a bit fan of the G12-65 too. I think it, along with a couple of other speakers have been a bit limited in the way in which we recorded all these speakers. We had to keep amp settings the same for each speaker but in practise you wouldn;t do this. I think the G12-65 fell foul of this, it would have benefited from a bit of tweaking on the eq. I'm hoping to do a series of videos on the G12-65 to remedy this a little.
These are the sound of Metallica with an overdriven JMP-2203 or MESA BOOGIE Mark IIC+/Studio Preamp feeding a JMP-2203 with 6550 tubes instead of EL34 for the Ride The Lightning and Master of Puppets albums. If using only a single driver I would personally choose this G12-65 over a V30 but they sound brilliant when combined. Their respective frequency and impedance characteristics as well as their harmonic structures compliment each other quite well together. The 65 just has a better 2nd harmonic profile, period, even if it doesnt quite possess the clarity and cutting edge bite that the V30 always attributes.
Wow, that Rola 65 is topping almost all of these in its path which all have some shrill top end thing going on. That Mystery black speaker is second place and Creamback H takes third on the podium.
Thanks for watching. As it goes, this recording of the G12-65 is a little darker than normal. I think it works a bit better in an open back cabinet and here it is closed... but it sounds like you preferred the G12-65 anyway... and yeah the mystery speaker is great.
@@ZillaCabs Is the 80 a lttle brighter and more scooped or just different mid center? Does the 65 have more lower mids than the 80? Trying to figure out what I am hearing here with the lead 80 and G12-65. Maybe you can explain it better?
@@ZillaCabs I'd be happy to help if you have difficulty. It would probably be possible to extract the data from the images alone, following which it would be trivial to produce the plots using Python, for example.
Please do celestion g12h75 creambacks with 21 other speakers next!!! I'm really curious what will mix best with that speaker, as a lot of people seem to love it, but I've not heard it mixed with many other speakers
I always thought the 65 was bright but in this comparison it sounds darker than the rest of the speakers and has much low mids.....am I hearing that right? Anyone? I think the older vintage one were different not only to the new ones but to each other year after year. I had some that were scooped sounding but felt like a greenback as far as feel goes but without the mids of a greenback. They werent dark as far as I remember. Not harsh though either.
It depends what cab you hear them in, these days you often find them in open back cabs which will change how they act. I have to say, in recording speakers the way we did here there are some speakers that are fine with the inflexibility of not using the amps eq and others that aren't. I would have definitely re-eq'd the amp here in a real recording situation. There is no perfect way of recording so many speaker without introducing some error or bias.
We do occasionally make videos of other brands but you are right, we should do it more. I am getting in some WGS speakers, we've just had most of the Fane speakers come in and I am hoping to get some Jensens in too soon.
The G12-65 sounds like the high end rolled off like an Eminence V12. The creamback 65 kills it. I have a G12-65 in a Dr Z combo. Gotta say this video has me leaning away from the G12-65.
