Ask This Old House general contractor Tom Silva explains why and how to change the locks in a new home.
SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: bit.ly/SubscribeThisOldHouse
Time: 30 minutes
Cost: $40 and up
Skill Level: Beginner
Steps:
1. When you move into a new home, you should change the locks on your house. You have no idea how many copies of the house keys are floating out there from the previous homeowners, so changing the locks will keep you new house more secure.
2. Take an inventory of all the doors with locks in the house.
3. Purchase new door knob lock sets at a home center. Look for knobs that are labeled “keyed alike” or have a matching code so that you can use the same key on all the doors. Most home centers can also rekey the lock sets when you buy them.
4. To change the locks, unscrew the door knob from the inside and pull the knobs apart.
5. Insert the new knobs into the door opening.
6. Screw the new knobs into the door.
Resources:
Tom recommends changing the locks whenever a new home is purchased. The door knob and dead bolt lock set Tom demonstrated with was a Plymouth Single Cylinder Knob Combo pack with a bright brass finished. It is manufactured by Schlage (www.schlage.com/en/home.html) and can be found at most home centers.

I love your videos. You should do a video on an old house door install. These are never typical and predictable as newer home exterior door installs. We run into more doors that are attached to a cinderblock and not newer wood construction. It would be an awesome video if you decided to do a video to install a new exterior door on old construction. Love your videos. Thank you.

Careful, if ur locks are pretty old the new one u get might not fit in the original hole and you'll need to bore out a bigger hole.

How to straighten a door than hangs wider at the bottom than the top? The striker - post that goes into the hole in the door jam - does not get engaged any more. It is an outside metal insulated door that sags on the opposite side from the hinges.

Good video. Good peace of mind on the 2nd place are security cameras. The moment someone opens my front door, a notification will appear on my phone, and the person will have a problem with the police.

Ring is a great drop in for a doorbell as well. I do supplement mine with a camera system that records to a dvr locally in my house. I still do not trust the cloud storage options.
@Engineer9736
@Engineer9736 5 лет назад
Both options have their downsides. For cloud storage, your video stream goes over the internet, for dvr, the video is stored in the same building as where the incident happens. Bulgars can demolish or steal the system, and fire will ruin it also.

Kwik Set and Master locks have a neat idea as well. Need to replace your padlock, make sure that you have a Kwik Set lock and get the re-keyable padlock from Master Lock that will use either the Master Lock or a Kwik Set key. Follow the simple instructions and your padlock will allow you to open it with the Kwik Set key. I did so even on my PU Truck and it opens using my side door key. No extra sets of keys are necessary.

Change the locks, but also look out for people casing your home. When people are moving in and out it is a good time for burglars to strike.

I'm a locksmith. You should always hire a locksmith. Locks can normally be rekeyed without purchasing new hardware at far less of a cost unless they were a low quality lock to begin with. Most hardware stores don't have a locksmith to re pin locks. Locksmiths also address many other issues on their $100 service call such as incorrect previous installations and strike plate issues. There are many problems that might exist on acquiring a new home, especially with doors and hardware. The correct terminology is the same 'user' key for all locks not 'master' key which would refer to a key used in an apartment complex where there is a 'master' key that can be used on all doors. The finish is actually the color of the lock, not the brand, and if there are different key pathways then that's when either replacement to match up the locks or new 'cheaper cylinders ' can be installed by a locksmith. Under estimate yourself when it comes to locks... It's a tricky transition. I would've expected a better guide on this channel :)

Thanks for mentioning this. I was disappointed they didn't mention this on the show. Replacing all of that hardware is wasteful, especially if the prior owner has invested in quality hardware.

@@muchmuchmore Lowes/home depot around here all will rekey, no need to worry about coded boxes. If you want to add something like a smart lock to your existing home keys just bring one with you to have it matched. Was pleasantly surprised to know this when I was at lowes one time and an employee saw me buying door handles and offered the service.

LMFAO If there ever was a need to NOT hire a pro this is it. I have been changing door locks for years as a handyman, weekend warrior and this is one of MANY tasks that don't require a pro. Weak attempt at drumming up business with scare tactics.

ps this door seem very weak like it can be kick in ps use a drill and not a hand screwdriver for one it will make it tighter alway do a kick test with your house door if you can knock down your door by kicking it or slamming in to it you need a better lock and door

As someone who rekeys locks in a hardware store, i must say it is not a difficult process to actually rekey locks. Most hardware stores also charge much less than a locksmith, and in most cases, can even do it for free. (I rekey locks for free at my store) to the extra satisfaction of the customer.
@GottSegneDich
@GottSegneDich 5 лет назад
Ronald Online That’s fine when they have Schlage or kwikset. But you most likely won’t be equipped to handle national locks or true Yale keyway locks. Another example would mul-t-Lock or Medeco. We rekey those all the time where a hardware store is not equipped to handle it.

what reason do i have to trust a locksmith more than the guy at the key counter whose gonna do the same job for way less? they’re both strangers, just one is gonna charge an arm and a leg for a 5 minute job
