Be sure to bleed air from the fuel line of a diesel engine after filter change. If air gets into the high pressure side, the fuel will not combust. Then the fuel lines need to be bled at the injectors.
On initial start, close raw water intake until engine is running. If the engine is cranked a long time before it fires, raw water can back up into the exhaust manifold and cylinders .
