Changing the Rules Part 3: Traveling / Dribbling

Part 3 of "Changing the Rules for Jordan" looks at yet another way the league has made the game easier for today's "superior athletes" rather than harder.
The way people play today reminds me of when I would babysit little kids and play basketball with them...anytime they got stuck they would just pick up the ball and run as far as they needed to then put it down again when they were ready to attempt a new dribble. I allowed this because they were just little kids learning the game and it was all about fun. No problem. But now adults pull this crap and have the nerve to act like they have mad skills.
Today's NBA has been on a steady path of reducing ball handling restrictions to that of toddlers playing on a 3 foot tall nerf court. If that doesn't personify that things are getting easier I don't know what does.

For the dummies who cannot see how much this inflates offenses, this is equivalent to allowing soccer players to lift the ball with hands and run a few steps to new location and then dropping it when they are in the clear. You cannot compare scoring averages, shooting percentages etc from this cupcake era where you cannot handcheck and you are allowed to carry the ball to “change direction”. The palming of the ball is so ridiculous. Adam silver has made it so that the game is cheapened.

@lydellb

I stopped arguing with people about this years ago. Travelling is one of the most important calls there is in basketball. Not calling it gives the offense an insane advantage. As a defender you're expecting certain restraints and you know what a player's options are depending on what they are doing with the ball. If a guy can pick up dribble and take four steps then it might be pretty hard to anticipate a shot.
@michaelcambridge1542

Exactly!!! Then lebum gets fouled after the blatant travel and gets a free pass to the foul line or even a "and 1" Smh....but like you said, it's impossible to properly defend a guy when you know he already picked up his dribble, but is then allowed to take 3 or 4 steps. Ridiculous.

It’s weird how “fans” nowadays aren’t really fans of the sport. They’re defense lawyers and amateur PR consultants for their “favorite player” (which has as much to do with their popularity & fashion choices as their actual game), because they identify with them on a weird parasocial level. I truly believe that travelling rule changes, were single most impactful thing that makes today players look like they are un-guardable. I mean how can one guard James Hardens backwards walk in the park? In the past defender knew the limitations of offensive player's movement within the rules of dribbling the ball. Today there are no rules, on top of blind refs, who rarely bother to even look at the players feet anymore.

When I was a kid in the 90s I "developed" a move where I'd dribble behind my back with my right hand and feint to left to make the defender commit but instead of completing the behind the back dribble I'd swing the ball back to the right (the ball never leaving my right hand) and drive to the hoop past the defender who's momentum was carrying him to the left. I definitely needed to cradle the ball to do this, or at least handle it with my hand underneath. It's done quickly and I got away with it all summer on the playground but the minute I tried it in practice at school my coach put a stop to it haha. I was in 8th grade, 12-13 years old. I remember memorizing basketball rules when i was a student because it is part of the physical education curriculum, and i really remember saying to my self i can only do two steps without dribbling the ball. This was late 90s to early 00s and i'm not even a big basketball fan, it was just needed to pass the subject. I wonderbif LBJ fans have the same physical education subjects.

Great video as always. Don't forget the other rules changes that were implemented after Michael Jordan retired in 2003 were: (1) Changing the format of the 1st round of the playoffs from a best of 5 to a best of 7. This allows for players to increase the probability of racking up more points towards their career point total since there are mathematically more games to play in the playoffs. (2) The fact that players fouled on a 3-point shot, are now given 3 Free Throws. Whereas in the past, a player fouled on a 3-point shot was only given 2 Free Throws. Being given 3 Free Throws also increases players probability of adding to their career point total, vs players in the past who were only given 2 Free Throws instead of 3.

From 30 feet away to dunking without even 1 dribble 🤣🤣🤣 The assist thing has become totally ridiculous. I've lost count of how many times I've seen lebron throw a pass to a teammate, the teammate takes 4-5 dribbles, makes a move, then shoots, and lebron is somehow credited with an assist. We keep hearing today's players are the most skilled ever and I believe that is false. They're able to circumvent the rules so it appears they are more skilled. If player A can take 4-5 steps to get around defenders who can't put their hands on the offensive player vs player B who can take 1 step and be hand checked by the defender it gives the appearance that player A is getting to the basket easier therefore they must be more skilled.

I'd really love to see Steph in the 80s or 90s. I remember when Delly was irritating him in the Finals. Take that and crank up the intensity. No doubt he's got range but add physicality and I'd love to see what happens. In the 90s he'd be trying to run off ball around screens and an enforcer would just stiffen up and let him run into a brick wall. When I played high school ball in eastern Canada in the mid-80's, it was so old-school it was unbelievable. You were allowed one step. So many traveling violations were called. Very strict on "3 in the Key" defensive violations. If you frickin' grazed somebody on defense, it was a foul call. And you had to dribble almost like a yo-yo, or you were called for a "carrying" violation, ie.e. palming the ball. I actually believe that ball handling today is super inflated with every player doing so many unnecessary moves just to get some space to get a shot off. Players gotta double hezi crossover step back just to get open now. One can say this takes "more skill" since they're doing more things and it certainly is harder to do all that, but there is such a thing as "wasted movements." The great players of old could get enough space to get a clean look in 0-2 dribbles, often times with a single move. Sure it doesn't look as flashy, but it was highly efficient and deadly. Someone doing one move into a shot is harder to react to than a player doing an elaborate sequence of dribbling combos. This is also why players like Jaylen Brown are inconsistent in the playoffs because he has to be doing some fancy dribble combos just to get open, and when defenses start to pressure you more, you aren't allowed to do all that. Every guard plays like that too, even some of the bigger players. So the lie of the players being more skilled today is another media narrative young cats just latch on to because they don't know any better. While you can say it takes more skill to do all those dribble combos, it certainly doesn't make you a better player, more dribbles means you're giving the defense a better chance to read you increasing the likelihood of a turnover. BALL HANDLING has come to just mean dribbling today when it means how well you take care of the ball. Players in the past had clean and tight handles, Isiah, Stockton, Jordan, Hakeem, Penny, Bird, Magic, but since they didn't go inbetween the legs 8 times into a stepback hezi spin behind the back left handed floater then they weren't skilled.
