Chap-hop is born of the culture promoted and celebrated by The Chap, a very British magazine about wearing tweed and smoking a pipe while drinking tea and touching your moustache.

The thing about cultural appropriation is, If you get rid of all instances of it, you have isolated 'this race only' culture, which is horrifyingly racist.
@therealquade
@therealquade 9 лет назад
This Exists what the hell are you on about. I'm literally saying that cultural appropriation ISN'T a problem, and that actually working to get rid of it, IS a problem because of what any so-called solution would result in. what exactly are you trying to say dude? your reaction to this seriously comes out of left field and doesn't make any sense. --edit I can't tell if you're trying to say that I'm saying something like that, if you're agreeing and being sarcastic, or what, because... you know... poe's law. and sarcasm not being a part of text.
@thisexists

therealquade Sorry - definitely sarcasm. I thought you made a good point. Tone can be tough.
@therealquade

This Exists I always tend to cringe whenever I hear anyone talk about 'cultural appropriation' since it's pretty much always stated as "a bad thing", but people never consider the consequences of not having it. and..... it gets to me some times, y'a know? it's literally a first-world-problem. culture and cultural appropriation are variety, and variety is the spice of life... well, that and spice, but oh no cultures include combinations of spices. only tangentially related, but when the hell did things get like this?
@CCAndPinkie
@CCAndPinkie 9 лет назад
therealquade Speaking as someone of two different cultures, I don't see what the problem is...This clearly is nothing like blackface, If people are getting uppity about a brittish man creating his own style of rap, They need a more serious issue to get angry about, I hear White Slavery in Africa is a big thing right now, So are minority shootings here in America, That's really huge right now... Did they ever find that Missing Malaysian flight?

@Pause0

yes language obviously evolves but firstly that's not what you said, you said it is a replacement word for insults. so how am i supposed to know that. secondly i do not believe it has reached that point yet at least when i see it it seems like a pretty accurate description of the subject (like the host, i would say he dresses like a hipster).

*****OP's point is not that MRAs is good, they're not. OP's point is that a disscusion about MRAs does not belong in a video about unbeatable games or chap-hop. Those go in the MRA/anti-MRA videos, not This Exists.

I don't necessarily feel that all rap by people who aren't black is inappropriate, but it's very important to be respectful to the culture and it's history. I think you touched on that in this episode. As for Mr. B... I think it's fine to be honest - it's using the medium in a different way, and I think that's pretty cool. He's not trying to upstage black musicians, he's going down a completely different path.
@thisexists

mxgabsy He also has an amazing song that spends two minutes reading as typically dodgy white criticism of "hip-hop culture" before flipping in the last line. Ultimately what really sold me on his whole schtick as legit: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-FkES4anCYOw.html

I think that's exactly right. There's a difference between taking a piece of culture entirely out of context (white folks with bindis, for example) or using it as a prop (Native American headdresses) versus someone who obviously respects and understands something giving a genre a different spin.

Hey, thanks for cranking out these videos. I've gotten the opportunity to learn about a lot of really fringe cultures, a fucking dream for a young Sociology major. Thank you especially for the links you leave us, makes it so much easier to pursue any of the subjects. On a personal note, thank you for the typically muted sense of bias these subjects are presented in. The calm and reasonable way you touch on the opposing viewpoints of topics is refreshing to say the least, though when bias does shine through I'm typically right there with ya. I can never wait for the next videos, thanks again and keep up the good work.
@thisexists
@thisexists 9 лет назад
MrPunkerMcmetal Glad you find them useful! And thank - "muted sense of bias" is what I've tried to articulate to anyone shocked by the occasional pseudo-political comment. I mean, I'm standing in front of a wall of D.O.A. and Minor Threat posters.
@MrPunkerMcmetal
@MrPunkerMcmetal 9 лет назад
Hey now, at first half the fun was looking through that very backdrop."Pseudo-political" is all in the execution, and it's done just as well as the occasional venture into "pseudo-philosophical" territory. If you're ever struggling for content could I suggest more informal opinion videos? I'm not gona pretend to know the kind of prep work and scrip drafting that goes on each week, but my only complaint about the channel is that I'm always left wanting more. This would give you guys a chance to explore previous topics that had commentary or implications which had to be cut short. It could also help demonstrate what subjects viewers want more of with a little more clarity than just subs and views. Though it seems the channel has found a pretty consistent tone.

I was still under the impression that the third wave was the Tumblrites, Anita Sarkeesian's, and all the other non-progressives that misinterpreted 1984 in its entirety. Music in itself, no matter the genre, is never racist. Its what people turn music into, or what an individual says or does that becomes racism. For example country music isn't racist. Country music talking about white supremacy in a positive light IS racist. Its just one of those cases where there are two extremes that wont see the logical truth of the matter. There are "we have the right to be racist so that makes it okay" individuals, and the "everything is cultural appropriation" individuals. Both are wrong for obvious reasons. One way to combat the "everything is cultural appropriation" is by simply asking if they eat spaghetti, hamburgers, chinese food, or if they drink tea, coffee, or any form of alcohol not invented by their specific race. Most of the time they will say "well that doesnt count" which is when you should reply, "Oh so you get to decide what counts?"

Also, that ending made me cry actual tears, I laughed so hard. Chap-hop has been a favorite genre of mine for years. I think the biggest point to take form Chap-hop is that it's about pure fun. The music is very light-hearted, up beat, and (for the most part) generally clean. Mind you, I'm a fan of many genres of music. Hip-hop, R&B, Metal, Rock, etc. But Chap-hop has honestly taken over in my car during long drives. I even live-stream gameplay while listening to Professor Elemental (with his permission of course). That actually leads me to another aspect of Chap-Hop I love. Most of the well known chap-hop artists are genuinely friendly and love fan interaction. It's an aspect the seems to be lost in many genres these days.

Dude, as someone who is Black, "Left-leaning," and all that other jazz, Chap Hop is *Not racist at all.* it's not cultural appropriation. Its Cultural Osmosis. Appropriation is when another culture takes from a marginalized culture and misrepresents/trivializes their existence and struggle. Cultural Osmosis is basically when 2 cultures come together and influence one another to make new art, which is *exactly what chap hop is.*

Mr. B the Gentleman Rhymer is one of my favorite variants of the Chap-Hop, as well as Chap-Step artists I've ever heard. And to maintain a mustache of any sort is really a right pain in the rear.
