Mitsubishi Ductless Split Shut Off on OverCurrent Faults

I am working on a Mitsubishi Ductless Split that has gone off twice on overcurrent. It turns out the days it went off on overcurrent. The days it went off on overcurrent the morning started off around 15*F. The compressor was trying to slug liquid refrigerant and lock restored till it locked out. I found the sw1 preheat control function was turned off so I activated it. This works like a crankcase heater.

Mistsubishi in heat mode should be 415 psi at the ten minut to 12 minute mark from when the compressor turns on. If you hit those pressure at those times your charge is accurate. If you hit it sooner then the 10 to 12 minutes your over charged if you don’t reach that mark your refrigerant is low. Granted you don’t know how much over or under you are. But you will know one or the other

You are really putting out some good videos lately. The unfortunate thing is a lot installers do not now what the dip switch setting should be, on other Mitsubishi units a jumper wire needs to be cut for crankcase operation. All Mitsubishi units I sell is the Hyper Heat models, now you would think since these units are design for cold climates that they would automatically do this at the factory, the problem is that would lower the efficiency of the unit, and manufactures do not want to go down that path

Nice educational videos man!!! I'm a fresh subscriber, and I have a question regarding the communication you have with the customer when you explain to them what the problem might be. I've seen couple of your videos, including this one. Out of curiosity, do you think that most of your customers understand the air conditioning terms when you are explaining it to them? Like for example on this video you brought up the TXV to the customer and it seemed that he knew what you were talking about.

My outside compressor stopped running. Inside blowing like in fan mode on all settings - no lights flashing. I turned off and back on the outside unit multiple times - checked the breaker box and nothing changed - left the outside compressor switch off - went to work - came home and switched back on. Started the inside unit and guess what - the compressor came on! I read that leaving the outside compressor switch off for 30 minutes or so resets it. And now it seems to be working. Going to run it through the night. Its a Mr Slim Mitsubishi split air - 36000 Btu unit. I have the repair guys coming in 2 days to Replace the entire compressor - its will cost 6 grand and change to replace. Damn! We’ll see if it runs tonight and tomorrow!

How bad is an overcurrent? Doesn't the unit just throttle back to protect from the over current?
@thehvachacker

It shuts down the unit because the overcurrent is almost like lock rotor amps. The cold thicker oil slugs the compressor. The compressor shuts down instead of blowing up the inverter board

Actually, if mini splits are properly installed, protected from voltage surges, and properly maintained (you know, get cleaned once in a while) they last just as long as a conventional split system and cost a fraction to operate. The overwhelming majority of mini split calls I get are dirty evaporators/condensers/blower wheels, dead remote batteries, and low charge. Toss in a few dead inverter boards here and there because it was installed by the cheapest bidder who doesn't know what a surge protector is and you have the overwhelming majority of mini split service calls. I've never seen a dead compressor and I know few who have. I've seen one bad EEV. I've seen one bad IR receiver on a head.

It's interesting, I was noticing power usage on my mini split when it was off, about 35W and LG did a great job of not disclosing that information in any of the provided manuals. LG rep said it was done by passing current through compressor windings and would be active all the time. Yet I see it go off completely and sometimes draw like 15W, seems to be temperature regulated. Cheeky bastards praising their unit efficiency and hiding those important facts!
@albertastorms
@albertastorms 5 лет назад
FrozenHaxor Inverter technology is hype, it really isn't better, just makes a repair more expensive and a unit more likely to break down! Mini Splits are good for buildings that have hydronic heating and no duct work as an ac retrofit, and very small apartment suits and cabins, but for whole homes I would just use a gas furnace and central ac setup!
