Great video. Really helped. Car is running really nice and smooth right now. However, there is a tick and I can't remember if it was there before or not, but all the timing marks were aligned and the tension was accurate.

I love how amazed he was by the tensioner. For what it's worth, you can usually replace just the pulley far cheaper than the whole tensioner, since the spring tends to outlast the bearings. :)

@@Wrenchlife604 Then you should try the GM Eco tech...The Timing Chain drives the water pump...You need a special tool to lock the timing chain down. Then take the water pump off from the back side of the engine. All without dropping them 3 bolts out the front. Into the Oil Pan if you drop one..Then you have to take the whole front timing cover off. to retrieve it. Why I bought a set of Koken Nut Grippers..

If my timing belt broke before I could transfer over paint marks, what would you recommend would be the best way to make sure it fires when I put it back together? Just make sure the timing gear marks and the crank gear mark is lined up where it is supposed to be?

If the timing belt broke. Its a good chance the engine is done. They are interferance engines. So when the belt brakes. The valves usualy hit the piston and they brake

Ya line up the marks. Then when the belts on. Spin it over a few times. And recheck the lines and make shure they lineup

i thought the tenioner was supposed to be clocked a little past the mark?so when you tighten it it aligned straight

good to check it before and after. in our case. the mark lined up when we tightened it, and when we manualy turned the crank , the tensioner arrow was still in the correct spot. aslong as the allignment arrow is alligned before you start putting everything backtogether, you will be fine.

When reinstalling the water pump it says use lubriplater on the seal I can't get a hold of any. Is there something else I can use like a gasket sealant maybe?

cam sprockets need to be removed. to remove the rear plastic plate to access ethe water pump bolts. you are right. should have changed the idler and tensioner while doing the job!

Great vid! How many kms were on it, and what were symptoms? Wife has an 09 pontiac wave G3, pretty sure same design, ive replaced the thermostat and topped off coolant, but noticed the car doesnt produce great heat and the temp gauge sits right at minimum no matter how long you drive it...but you get a smell of burning a pot of water on the stove through the vents... Im suspecting water pump is bad, but hate to go through all of that and find out its not the pump! Car has about 139K (kms im Canadian also) Whats your take on it? How many hrs did you have on this one?(trying to see if i can borrow a heated garage and get it done in an evening) Thanks man

i think the car had around 200km. in your case with the temp gauge being low i wouldnt suspect the water pump. did you notice your coolant level going down or having to add coolant? also you said the car dosnt produce strong heat. but does the heat work ?

Was thinking the pump wasnt circulating enoughcoolant to get to the thermostat housing, thus not allowing the coolant to reach the temp sensor... Thats just my hunch, not saying im right or not...

the cooling system is air tight and under pressure so the temp sensor should be able to read the coolant. if it water pump failed the temp gauge would be pinned in the read zone pretty quick. what i would do if i where you is to start the car and see if the cooling fan is stuck on. i think that may be the reason why you car is running cool. also let the car run and touch the upper rad hose and then the lower rad hose and see if both are getting warm or not

I had to bump start engine to get harmonic balancer bolt off, once the pulley was off, I reinstalled the bolt, but could only manually turn crankshaft so far, before it got stuck. Any way to get the crankshaft unstuck so I can manually turn engine and line up the timing marks?

remove the spark plugs on the engine to make the engine turn over easier without getting stuck

@@Wrenchlife604 ok. I found out that the timing is off. I know I have to get the engine to top-dead-center. Is TDC achieved with the timing belt still on? After finding TDC i just have to turn the camshafts so the lines point to each other on the inside (3 o'clock position for intake, 9 oclock position for exhaust)? Is there a specific way I have to rotate the camshafts (clockwise vs counter clockwise)?

keep the timing belt on. and rotate the engine either way. clockwise or counter clock wise. you dont want the cam and crank to be off more than a couple teeth. or else the valves can contact the top of the piston

You relieve tension on the belt by the water pump. This shares the same engine as a daewoo lanos and it's a 41mm specialty wrench. When reinstalling you tighten the water pump and watch the tensioner Mark line up

Whats the torque you want on the water pump bolts so they dont slip and lose tension on the timing belt?

Once the timing belt is tensioned you want to tighten down the water pump bolts. I dont normaly use torque wrenches for that small of a bolt but you want them on tight. Make shure you dont go too tight and snap them them.

Big ol channel locks. Works for tightening too. I've gotten as far as trying to get my new impact gun to snug down the harmonic balancer without spinning it. So far no luck.

Not perfect. But it worked. The allen head bolts tighten the waterpump down. But the channel locks clock the waterpump inorder to tension the belt. Prety stupid design in my opinion

for some reason it won't let me on you but preciate you helping me but yea it doest do it all the time I have a 2000 trans am ws6 it has a stage 1 monster clutch and a built t56 my master cylinder recently went out and I put the stock one back on it when I release the clutch it makes a horrible sound like metal on metal rubbing that's why I think it's the master cylinder is not shooting enough fluid in the clutch or something.your advice

was it okay before you swapped the clutch ? just did a master and slave on a 4th gen camaro SS LS! and those clutches suck to bleed. how did you go abouts bleeding the master cylinder/ bench bleeding it before you installed it

Wrench life 604 I didn't install it so I really don't know a shop did for me I mean I can do it but I work construction and I don't have the time.what I do know is the stock master cylinders don't feed enough fluid, it had a tick performance one on it and I just put the stock one back on it.when I bought the car the monster clutch was already on it too I was think maybe the stock one couldn't live it up enough and no it didn't do it before but it's weird because it doesn't do it very much and it seems to do it when I first get in the car.

dose it grind when trying to go into gear, clutch in grinding noise when putting the lever into 1st. or does it go into 1st fine then grind when your driving hitting 2nd get. stock clutch master and slave can handle almost any clutch. so no need to upgrade to a " preformance one"

Wrench life 604 well it doesn't grind really but it's hard to get it into first sometimes I have not to force it but push the clutch real fast the kinda force it into first and reverse I usually have to turn the car off and use two hands to get it into reverse but every other gear it fine and I hear aliitle whining noise from either the gears or the tranny when I drive it only in first and second though

take off the cam sprockets. and remove the belt with the cam gears. they have to be removed anyways to remove the water pump.

Water pump seized to the engine block due to rust.Thats why you are not able to turn it to release the tension.

I suggest keep the belt tight until after you loosen the timing gears just to help keep timing set until the bolts are loose then release tension.

Undo the bolts. Then grab a long piece of wood. Then hit it with a hammer to knock it loose

Keep nothing, you got it apart, change all. A real pain to put it together and a few weeks later have to take it apart again to replace something you could have done the first time.

I used an impact. If you dont have one. You can hold the camshaft from spinning. You just have to remove the valve cover tho. So plan on buying a new valve cover gasket.

I being waiting for the mechanic to fix my water pump so I have done mechanical work before I got tired of waiting as soon I finish he came by but wanner money early and could fix it next day I told it's fix he say I come as far from Los Angeles understand me I say you should understand me I being waiting a week he got really mad cause today is labor day and he want to take his girlfriend out but not my problem I took my girlfriend instead
