In this video I take you through a fast-paced step-by-step tutorial for replacing the lower control arms on a 2011 Chevrolet HHR. These parts stayed the same for all model years (2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2011) and were the same for both 2.2l and 2.4l engine packages. This procedure is the same when replacing lower control arms on Chevy Cobalt, Pontiac G5, And Saturn Ion.
Faulty control arms will result in loose or sloppy steering and can also cause the vehicle to dart or the steering wheel to jerk while braking. Faulty control arms can also cause clunking or banging under the car while going over bumps or turning left to right.
I always perform repairs according the factory service manual. You need to have all the information (toque specs, testing procedures and schematics) to insure you've pinpointed the actual problem and to insure your vehicle is safe after you've completed your repairs. The tools I use in this video in order they appear are: 1/2" flex-head ratchet, 19mm 1/2-drive socket, floor jack, jack stand, 3/8" electric impact, 19mm deep impact socket, 3/8" flex-head ratchet, 15mm socket, 3/8" socket extension 6", 15mm deep socket, 15mm combination wrench, 4' automotive pry bar, 21mm 1/2"-drive socket, 21mm 3/8"-drive socket.
The lower control arms I install in this video are Duralast brand and were purchased at a local Autozone for around $140 a piece. Part #'s 521-026 (passenger side) and 521-025 (driver side)
The factory torque specification for the large control arm to subframe bolts is 74 ft/lbs and additional 180 degrees.
The standard labor rate for this job is around 1.6 hours so doing this job yourself could save you upwards of $200 (and that's not including the price mark-up on the parts!)
