Congratulation on inventing a stretchable and non-reflecting visor for your suit! When you adjusted your glasses after going out of the airlock and once you went back in it, it looked as if your hand phased right through your visor!
I have a couple ideas for your water collection. I think it would make sense to combine your mineral heating method with the tarp method. To do this, instead of using a dehumidifier that needs constant power use a hygroscopic desiccant like calcium chloride or epsom salts. You can absorb all your water in that way without constant power expenditure, then kiln out the water all at once a few gallons at a time. I bet the short burst of kiln power will be less than the constant dehumidifier power. Maybe just have a little solar powered computer fan for mild circulation. Second idea is to mount a big umbrella shaped tarp on a wheelie cart or an automated roomba thing that changes location when it detects humidity has dropped below a useful threshold.
The buckets of desiccant could remain stationary in a solar still, picking up water at night, and getting rid of it during the day. Just change where the air circulates twice a day.
alternatively, why not just use "passive cooling" (atmospheric window IR emission) for condensation, since the moisture is created by the sun anyway. the humidifier is essentially just an easy way to collect condensed water, no real need to waste power for that.
So glad you’ve acquired a new Critters Acquisition Termination (CAT) as these systems have proven to improve the mental and physical health of those in isolation and the wider public! Miss Buddy hope he’s well on his own journey.
@@rofltehcaton a large scale I can see this being a problem but I assume that also depends on the weather\season. And it probably wouldn’t be worth to move it as the edges would still be collecting some moisture.
@@nunyabisnass1141 trick is to get them used to it early. Often the only car rides cats get are to the vet, so they see the car as a sign of stress. If you start early on just driving around with a cat, they will get used to it and think nothing of it. A friend of mine will take her cat for a train ride every weekend when she goes to visit her parents. Cat is completely cool with it because she has someone she trusts and has done it so often it barely registers.
I had almost forgotten about chicken hole base, and then out of nowhere, new episode to brighten my day. EDIT: I'd like to propose an alternate rig setup for your distillation. Bury one of your smaller tanks completely, and put shade over it. Have a hose coming from under the tarp to a relatively high point. Warmer air from under the tarp should create a natural draft to this high point. At the high point, put some coils to cool the air and some shade over that. From the coils, drop another hose down to the buried tank, all the way to the bottom of it. From the top of the buried tank, run another hose back to the tarp. This makes it a completely passive system that gets the benefit of the higher temperature differential, but without needing any moving parts or electricity.
The taste of the dehumidifier condensate is probably from the evaporator coils. Metal food cans have a plastic coating to limit contamination. I would treat the water collected as grey water.
I like how Cody's directing skills have improved over the years. The video has a nice variety of topics and pace. There is enough going on with the cat and robo Cody to make it feel lively despite the very lonely locale. It's nice to see the base coming along, I'm always excited by the greenhouse. I love the way that chicken steps so carefully!
Given the low amount of gas that fridge needs in order to run, you could revive your biodigester project to fuel it (helpful that you have a camping crapper too, perfect place to start!), they are pretty much a small candle flame type thing, so the amount of gas your digester made would be suitable, and of course there's always a gasometer system to store it too if there's any excess... :)
Cody, I'm absolutely amazed by your innovative methods of extracting water from the soil and clay powder! It's fascinating to see how you've been able to apply these techniques to improve the living conditions at Chicken Hole Base. Your commitment to sustainability and resourcefulness is truly inspiring. Keep up the fantastic work, and I can't wait to see what other breakthroughs you'll achieve in your future videos!
@@Rapture9999 It's a long term project to test out habitation on mars. Everything he does with chicken hole base is related to living on mars in some way
Awesome work Cody! I'm so excited for the day you finally get the full habitat set up and live in a closed system for a full year or more. This is every habitat engineer's dream! Congrats on making it happen.
If you use a portable A/C unit inside your camper you will be able to reclaim gallons of water a day via the drain vent on the A/C unit, we found this out last summer inside of our RV.
smart idea but he is simulating that he is on Mars so the exhaust would also be a task to find a way to get the waste air out and new air in without it being stuck outside a window but if that can be solved it is a great idea for constant cooling and water source but power is limited and A/C's use a lot of power. It still would be a fun experiment to see and to see how much water it can collect from just being in the air inside alone since very little outside air around on Mars.
@@CameronSalazar2113 eventually the greenhouses would be hooked into the air system to convert the co2 back to o2 and food. and i think the greenhouses already have a system in place/planned to dehumidify the air before sending it to the habitats. so any moisture he breaths out will make its way there via the co2 return vents
I am impressed with the water recovery. That is really rad. Very excited to see Robo-Cody's accomplishments, too! Here's to a productive growing season. 🤞
C'mon Universities, give this very multitalented man an Honorary Degree, Cody would bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to your academic world. IMHO - it's long overdue.
New chicken hole base! I get so excited when I see these. You’re really awesome and I love to see your progress on this project. Thank you for sharing with us Cody.
Hey cody, i discovered your content a few years ago, and instantly you turned into a role model for me. Ive been slowly turning into you in some ways, and i guess i just wanted you to know that youre a great role model, a great person, and i hope to one day be just like you.
Cody Please never change I love all the nerdy talk you put in the videos on the lines of there being a mock airlock and waiting for it to pressurize it's amazing and shows your dedication to the project even while on earth!! I cannot wait for the day you land on Mars and lead the projects to new heights!!
Not going to lie seeing him living out of a car in earlier videos was depressing. I appreciate how passionate he is about this project, but when I saw the horse flies he was dealing with even where he sleeps I questioned if this was worth doing.
@@Ironclad17 I can see what you mean it was rough but with the passion and smart he demonstrates now and the amount of support, he has earned and worked hard for what we enjoy which is watching Cody grow and learn and become a proper young man and pro youtube. He also has never, in my opinion, betrayed his own morals in a sense he has always done what's best for his channel and his supporters, with all that in mind I say his grind was worth it in my eyes he is a sorta hero in the YT learn space!
@@koukouzee2923 I forget who it was, but there was a video talking about bots using AI to scan a video's comments and then generate replies based on the video content and the comment section. Often they're kind of general and not super specific. I think it was actually from a quip on the WAN show on LTT. I'm not saying this person is a bot, who knows. But the comments made by the many accounts with the same lewd photo are definitely bots
@@TinyGiraffes right? And he commented on LWT w/John Oliver's video 15min after they posted As if he had watched the whole video I was about to comment about how often i see them, this is at least the 4th time in the last couple days.
I absolutely love these videos. Such a fun watch. You seem so creative and your ability to find multiple uses for everything is great. I also love the commitment to the bit to the point of getting suited up, setting up a camera outside, bringing the cat back inside, and then exiting. And the shot of you drinking the water with robo-cody in the background had me replaying it over and over again to see if I could see where the trim was. Can't wait to see more!
I love your videos, especially the Chicken Hole Base series -- I just wish you posted them more often. 😹 Glad to see you have a new kitty -- and he clearly loves you! 😻
I really love what youre doing cody! Everytime you update us on the base it brightens my day. Good luck, I can't wait to see what you'll accomplish down the road!
Hey Cody, remember that the distilled water needs all the usual minerals, so that it doesn't collect them from your body, it would be pretty sad to see you all demineralized :) thanks for yet another great video on your very exciting project. I wish you all the best.
I have been drinking pure demineralized water for over a year out of my reverse osmosis filter as a test and I'm in perfect health. Take that info as you wish.
Food borne minerals contribute to your mineral intake orders of magnitude more than water does. The difference between drinking tap vs distilled water is completely insignificant. The "distilled water de-mineralizes your body" idea is a myth.
I love seeing the new kitty hanging around like that, I was bummed when Buddy went MIA. Your progress is really impressive man! Im a little jealous of the sweet setup youve got now
Lol, at 3:15 when he leaves... the cat leaves also.... which means he had to open the door, the cat ran out, and he set up the outside camera. Then he went and caught the cat, brought it back inside, put on the suit, and then re-did the shot with cat-accurate details hahaha.
Thanks for giving us an update on the ChickenHole Base! I love the new kitty and how talkative they are. Also glad to see the new spring plans taking shape and the better housing facility!
I'm always in awe of how much you're able to do out there on your own. I realized, looking at your videos, that I'm not cut out for being a pioneer. I'm too used to socializing at work, having access to a supermarket full of frozen chicken nuggets, and spending my time at home watching RU-vid and playing games. These videos fill me with respect for your dedication to your work and your way of living. Thank you for sharing your joy, Cody.
Wow! Been a bit since I checked in and it’s looking so cool! Cody I’ve been following you for most of my life now. I hope you know how important you are to us and how important you always will be.
Cody. I absolutely love this series and I wish you all the best with this project. It seems you got the critter acquisition system with the friend-upgrade. Good choice.
I love the ChickenHole Base series, not that you ever release a bad video it's just, the concept, the work and the ideas/innovation that has gone into it just has me hooked. Who knows what mad genius thing Cody will have come up with next? The whole thing is just really cool and I appreciate the effort that goes into it.
Good stuff, Cody! Your experiments always bring me a ton of joy cause of your creativity. Looks pretty rugged out there, I bet having that kitty cat is easy mode for keeping the morale up! Be safe out there
Might want to check out the water you get from it. I remember ohio fish rescue had a dehumidifier dribbling back into their tank. I think they Said it was introducing excessive nitrogen back into the system. Could be a cool experiment
You should make a closed system terrarium that mimics the Martian environment, use window tint to mimic the lower sunlight and use iron rich soil. It would be interesting to see how our earth plants would fair.
RU-vid hasn't been recommending your videos for so long now! Sometimes I worry when I don't see your content, good to see chicken hole is still going :) been watching since the start
I'm still sad about buddy, but I'm glad you've got a new friend, and the new living space seems like quite the upgrade, how do house warming parties on Mars look?
YES! Another chicken hole! It's felt like an eternity since the last one and I have been anxiously awaiting a new episode ever since. Still super excited about all the projects you're working on Cody!
