Childhood Limb Length Discrepancy: From The DMs, Episode 6 

I’m so glad you could give this mother some answers!

What a great mother to reach out and advocate for her daughter when she's not getting the answers she wants! My daughter suffers from leg length discrepancy due to an accident as a child. If the mom is here looking at the video I would suggest going to an orthopedic surgeon for children asap. The doctor will do a special x-ray called a scanogram that measures the difference between the two legs. They can also refer the parent to an orthotics company to assist with appropriate footwear and/or orthotics. My daughter for a while had to get a lift installed to her shoes as she grew. They can suggest shoes to purchase that they can modify. When your daughter gets closer to puberty the surgeon might suggest having the growth plate drilled out to stop the growth so they can even out. If you are near a major city that has a children's hospital I would suggest seeing someone there. May everyone here have a wonderful new year!

When I was 10 years old my pediatrician thought I had scoliosis while checking my spine. I was sent to an orthopedic specialist. Turns out I had a between 3/4 of an inch to an inch leg discrepancy causing my spine to appear curved because my hips would be out of line. I had no issues at all, but was told if the discrepancy wasn’t corrected I WOULD develop scoliosis and orthopedic problems as I got older. The doctors said they could correct the problem and stop the growth of the longer leg so the other could catch up. I had that surgery at age twelve. I am now 52 and don’t seem to have any issues. While the child you discuss obviously is more severe, I can’t understand why the doctors can’t come up with a plan to help her. My story is 40 years ago. There MUST be medical advancements since then.

If you need to know ask Dr. Jefferson, the DC Foot Doctor! In 1974 a friend of mine had a daughter had the same issue. Notice I used the past tense, her grandmother observed it too and the pediatric doctors said the same thing as was told to this mother. The grandmother began massaging and stretching her granddaughters leg every single day. By the time she began walking her limbs were growing evenly and her feet were no longer uneven. The granddaughter is now a mother and grandmother herself and never had an issue with her legs or feet.

Another great video Dr. J.!! I'm praying for the parents and the young girl that she will be cured. I remember my brother wearing a heavy brace when he was a baby and a toddler because one foot layed totally over and couldn't straighten out and that was the seventies. Thank God for that brace, it straightened his foot out and he has walked normal all of his life. Without that brace he would literally be dragging that foot. I'm praying we have more advanced methods today for this little girl. Blessings Dr. J ❤.

I had lower limb lengthening due limb discrepancy. I was tracked from early childhood and when I stopped growing, I had surgery with a metal pins and frame to lengthen the limb. My foot is still smaller the legs are essentially the same length

Now mom can get better help for her daughter! What encouragement!!👍🏾

I had something like this when I was 3. The doctor said my hip quit growing. I had a brace on my knee that kept my knee bent. I walked on crutches for a year.
