My brother had severe anger issues as a child so I relate to this. He grew out of it. My parents protected him but they never protected me. I see you Tyler!!

Wow. I had to pull my car over and respond to this. Minus the husband and the extra siblings, this was looking in the mirror.Everything from the negligent parents to the abusive brother to constantly saying "i just don't know" in counseling. Most people laugh in my face when I tell them I was abused by my older brother, but I was. Years later, when I confronted my mom about it, she shrugged her shoulders and said "There was nothing I could do about it." Secrets truly do make you sick. Learning not to keep them was how I recovered. The last time I cut myself was almost two years ago. I did something I had never done before, I took myself to the hospital the next day (side note: it helped that I'm living in a different country where they don't practice involuntary hospitalization). I told the doctors what happened and allowed them to attend to my injury. A few days later, I went to the gym to have training with my personal coach. When he asked why my arm was all bandaged up, I told him the truth. His response? "You can't do that. No matter how bad things get, you can't hurt yourself. " For some reason, those words stuck with me. When I start to feel the impulse to cut, I repeat them in my head, and they calm me like nothing else. Not everyone will respond in the right way, but some people will givd you exactly what you need. Thank you for listening

I suffered from post partum cutting. I didn't realize it was common enough to be recognized, I thought it was just how I specifically was dealing with PPD. But talking about it more openly really did help. I started feeling less embarrassed about it and was able to stop.

My brother was much this way and still is very verbally and can be physically abusive. I can relate well to this caller. One parent is "stuck" believing he just can't help it and it's a load of BS. Meanwhile no support or interest in how this has affected me or thebother parent. So I have found myself extremely angry, and I am working through it with a therapist. Acknowledge your trauma, sis, then find someone to help you work through it. Much love and support!! ❤️❤️

What a brave call. So many hugs of comfort to this young lady. I really don't know much about it but my experience firsthand was brutal: My sister's neighbor's daughter was cutting (early high school) and escaped it for some time and returned to it during early college years. My perspective on my sister's neighbor: The parents presented false expectations and were silently abusive over her weight and just stupid ideas of what was important in life. Caller: Please take care and know that it's not you. Please know that you will be o.k. if you Love yourself and learn about the process you will be o.k. Please give your a hubbie a shot to be your teammate....tell him everything. Sending Love.

She might also be panicking/ triggered about her second child because this new baby is a younger sibling the way she was one. And until she had two kids there wasn't a sibling dynamic but now it's avoidable that she has to think about the older one having the power to hurt the younger one. With little kids it's a normal thing to have to tell a toddler to be careful with the newborn etc but for her it's all wrapped up in so much trauma.

I stumbled across this, as someone who has never seen your channel. I usually avoid this type format of show as its usually sensationalist, exploitative, and very little actual psychological help in my experience. But this is worlds different. I am 30 and was neglected as a kid, I also have endured abusive relationships. I self harmed from age 10 and I managed to taper off when I was 17. Last month I broke my 7.5 years of being free of it. I did it extensively every day for about 2 weeks. Relapse is not back at square one. It took me time to work that out, I felt such shame. I find it so difficult to go back and process my childhood experiences, dealing with the abusive boyfriends was so much easier despite being awful because I can trash talk them and I know they are the most awful people. But to try and piece apart the fact I love/loved my parents and it is so complex but they let me down, massively and they led me to the path that allowed boyfriends to abuse me. Its tough. Its rewriting and reanalysing everything you know and think you are as a person. This video helped me a lot. Thank you. It was heartbreaking to hear her break down and to hear the pain in her voice, to know she knew silence was safer just as I did. I wanted to reach out and wrap my arms around her and protect her and say its okay now you're safe. I related so much and to that lump in your throat you get when you dont want to say it out loud. But as you said your body is screaming. Thank you and thank you for being there for her and being what she needed. She was so brave and is so strong

Dr. John, thank you for your words to this young lady. My son who is now 40 cut himself during middle school. Beside his hurt it was mine also. I heard him up one night so I go up. He was in the kitchen making a sandwich and was as calm as can be. Several times we took him to the hospital. They would clean the wounds, once he needed stitches, and because he wasn't suicidal they would send him home. One time I said that if they would not commit him they would have to commit me. I felt so helpless as a parent. But the stay was for only 3 days . Thank God we found a good psychiatrist and he eventually stopped. His pain was due to his father who left. Please don't say that this girl overreacted to her brother. Even IF she did, and I don't think she did, the struggle to stop is real. And also is the pain and helpless of the family is real. Dr. John, do you think I should send this to my son or not. I don't want to trigger the past for him?

She really needs to hear that she was never unsafe, she is overreacting and not handling normal life experiences well at all. It doesn't make her a bad person or less than a "stronger" person. But you can't let people live in delusions, it is very unhealthy.

@@annelisebreman8801 I'm just believing what she said. And from what she said that is a very typical childhood. Siblings being rough and picking on you is not some crazy traumatic thing. I would imagine she is just not telling the whole story if she actually feels this way.
