Taiwan has been plunged into political strife just as Lai Ching-te starts his first term as president. Thousands are protesting outside the legislature-reminiscent of the Sunflower Movement of 10 years ago-against what they say are opposition moves to rush through legislative reforms which would give them greater oversight of the executive branch. Will the biggest challenges to Lai’s leadership come not from across the strait, but from inside Taiwan? And what does this mean for China as it watches on?
