Tempe city leaders have approved a plan to purchase the Apache Pollack Center for $10.7 million. The purchase included an abandoned Food City which closed earlier this year forcing residents to use other more expensive stores further away.

They just need to stop making building like they have money to burn. There are so many unused buildings around the valley that could be used for housing or other types of usage.

It took decades to build Tempe to what it was 6 years ago. a safe affordable place to live, retire or raise a family. Now it's trashy, turning ghetto like Phoenix. I spent 45 years of my life in this town and it's taking all i got not to turn to HATE!!!

I've nearby and that WAS the most affordable grocery store for the community. Where is the future affordable living community to shop for food now? Whole foods?

For the same 3 apartment complex I’ve looked at. I’m single Live with aunts & uncles. Arizona is cool. But I’m thinking g of moving back to my small Illinois town when I’m done with the electrician program

Tempe has begun its downward spiral. Don't the politicians in the Phoenix area see that similar "programs" have already been done in other cities and states and they just about always turn into a high crime rate scene that most people want no part of? Why are these politicians following policies in which they have seen fail numerous times in other places? The more "programs" you give, the more people that want programs will move there. It becomes a perpetual problem. As you offer assistance, the increase in people wanting assistance will increase. We are in a time in which employers can't fill all of the vacancies they have. Why aren't people working and learning how to manage their money? Do you know how many people on taxpayer based programs (welfare, food stamps, etc.) have $1,000 dollar cell phones, $150 sneakers, bling, bling and more bling, yet taxpayers are paying their share of rent, food, etc.? I worked among this situation for a long time and people that are receiving benefits many times have nicer phones, nicer clothes, etc. than many "working people". Instead of requiring people to earn and learn about earning and saving, they are being rewarded for not doing much to help themselves out. We see working families where both partners work, sometimes at least one person works 2 jobs, they save and pay taxes, commute, work overtime, etc. and they don't have many of the newer gadgets, etc. that people in these reduced price/free living situations have. Society has been creating a situation in which there is perpetual welfare and a lack of drive and ambition because they are being given things. Giving people food because they need to eat, or shelter because they have to safely sleep is fine but where is their sacrifice when they have all the latest gadgets, toys, get their hair and nails done regularly, are driving nice cars and wearing expensive jewelry? Of course this is not everyone but having worked among this for years, it is a lot more people than the government and the media would like people to know about. This mayor is only hurting Tempe and any surrounding area that is doing similar things is also hurting all of AZ. When parents stop sending their kids to college there, what are they going to do then?

You are wrong. Most poor people residing in Arizona don't show the luxury items you just mentioned. People working for minimum wages even having TWO jobs cannot afford to pay the high cost of rent plus the inflation rate for gas and food prices. Senior citizens and disabled people receiving a fixed income are also suffering from the high cost of living. Affordable and subsidized housing is needed for low-income earners. Who in hell can afford to pay $1300 a month for a one-bedroom apt. these days?

@@susanabrown510 The huge increases in home prices, etc. began when so many people fled CA, some other cities and states and came to AZ. Not only have the prices of homes increased but so have rents and now just about everything else. So, why was there a push for people to come to AZ? Especially now that we are seeing a huge influx of renters to the Phoenix area. What brought them from one renting situation to another? Government? Was this part of the plan to bring the inner city to the suburbs that this administration said it would push? Well, thank your politicians. I've worked in these environments and I wasn't referring to the elderly that are on social security and fixed incomes. I'm talking about younger people that are actually capable of working..... but they don't. I'm also not talking about drug addicts that would sell their soul to get high. They are not going to have new phones, expensive sneakers, etc. because they are only concerned with getting high. They usually sell anything of value that they have. Walk around some of the areas in which a lot of people are on benefits. Check out the clothing, phones, cars, sneakers, etc.. I worked among it and saw it firsthand. Again, I am not referring to drug addicts or elderly people that are unfortunately stuck in a bad situation. Who encouraged so many people to come to AZ? Why have homeless encampments grown so large and so fast? Who encouraged people already on public assistance to come to AZ and who paid for their moves? It is not everyone, but it is more people than you may think. AZ may not be as bad as NY, LA and some other cities when it comes to this stuff but it still is happening and it is getting worse. Blame whoever decided to grant builders so many permits, even though there isn't enough water as it is in AZ. Blame the politicians that want more population so they have more seats and influence. Blame the county officials that only saw more tax revenue to spend. Blame the supervisors that control the programs that are not encouraging abled body people to work. Because of that, taxes have to be raised and those tax increases are passed on to homeowners who then pass it along to the renters. Of course, there is good old fashioned greed that people are able to get away with because there are too many people moving to AZ in the first place. If there weren't too many people, they wouldn't be able to charge so much rent to begin with.

@@notsosilentmajority1 Pay attention. The high cost of rent is a problem NATIONWIDE! ..not only in Arizona. Additionally, Arizona like Nevada does not pay good wages. Fast-food workers don't get 40 hours a week and are without benefits. Teachers are the lowest paid in the nation. I repeat even having two jobs not many people can afford to pay $1300 a month for a one-bedroom apartment.

@@susanabrown510 I mentioned AZ because your initial post stated "Most poor people residing in Arizona don't show the luxury items you just mentioned." I'm not disagreeing with you about the high costs but now you are talking about nationwide. It is a problem but a lot of it has to do with the issues I mentioned in the last post. I don't understand why people are moving to a place they can't afford.?.? The people that were in AZ prior to all of this are victims of circumstance and they deserve something if they are legitimately unable to work or if they are elderly and on social security, etc.. The problem is that far too many people that should be working are taking money that could go to help these people. Also, our government is housing illegal immigrants in hotels and motels at taxpayer expense in Phoenix. That is ridiculous and those are resources that could go to citizens and people that were here prior to these insane increases.
