These five micro continents peacefully drifted across the endless ocean for thousands of years but one day a catastrophe occurred - people appeared. Like cockroaches, they devoured and destroyed everything in their way, and soon only one question left: will they destroy each other or land they live on first?
I used Community Patch (global modification of AI and bug fix) forums.civfana... for this battle.

Grate disappointment from England-usually strong and also naval-based civ with such a big advantage of a population growth. Could have done better. Also the Aztecs... kiled on the start by Shoshone borders. Good game after all. Enjoyed it and waiting for more!

Dude resurrected the Mayans only for them to get swallowed by Iroquois. Also the Mayans had been long dead by that point (They were still using swords and triremes XD)

A lack of, or limited supplies of Iron. They only had very few SotL at one time. They should have amassed their Longbow's and attacked Honolulu. Built a Navy and hit Constantinople, before turning on Lisbon. This would have been their best chance. I was rooting for them.

England, Portugal, Byzantium and Polynesia were gimped from the start. Notice none of the Civs on the ring island did anything all game. AI can't handle it.

If the Dutch wouldn't have played peacemaker about a dozen times with the Inca vs the Shoshone (liberating Mohson Khani every time after the Incans wiped them out) then maybe the Incans could have been a play-maker at the end? They seemed to have been pretty high in the tech game, but the Dutch were being b****es. Finally Inca went south off their own island, but they had wasted too much time and energy at that point and the Iroquois and Zulu were already way more powerful than them.

I thought Zulus and Iroquis are pretty equal in power, for first 10 turns of Great War it still seemed equal, and then they lost 3/4 of their empire in 6 turns lol

Honestly, Venice is probably the most powerful civ in the game. They might not be able to produce settlers, but they are great at producing great merchant that let them take prebuilt cities with stuff in them without a large happiness penalty and using any military. Those cities start with many buildings and improvments built by a city state. You also automatically gain control over the city's army, which city states tend to have nice armies. You don't waste time and food producing settlers letting you focus more on your capital. They also have double the trade routes which is HUGE. They are able to make so much money through trade which they can use to gain even more money by buying off city state reputation which gives you a nice array of bonuses. They are also able to use that money to quickly purchase units and buildings in puppeted cities. I honestly cannot understand how some people find Venice underpowered, I actually find it to be the best civ in the game.

Brain Tumor Does venice require great merchants to take over city states? Or is the bonus gold and ally status for world Congress good enough? Venice doesnt require military units, they deduct gold. Unless a neighboring civ declares war a lot. Civ 6 has a mod for venice and city states cant be bough my merchants in the same way, and each district provides a trade route and it's just as fun.

In order to peacefully puppet a city from a city state, yes, a great merchant is required. When Venice puppets a city state they lose the bonuses provided by the city state such as WC votes and gold, science ect. in reward for military power and the city itself. When I play I usually like to puppet 3 or 4 city states closest to me just for the protection and ally with every other city state by buying them, I usually don't even bother with the quests. As for military, it is still very much needed as, especially on higher difficulty, if the AI sees you with a small military, they are all sure to swarm you. It's not uncommon for every civ to go to war with you when they see you are weak. I usually wait until I get 1 or 2 puppets and raise a large strong navy to protect my capital. It is vital however to be able to build all of the right wonders if you want to survive. I usually build the Mausoleum for the Great Merchant Points, Colossus which for me is essential as it provides both G.M Points and a free route. I would also try and go for the Great Lighthouse which also provides G.M and the Hanging Gardens for the food. Later in game I always build the Big Ben for gold purchase reduction. I also usually play with a couple wonder mods such as the Grand Bazaar which gives plus 2 trade routes (which means 4 for Venice) and Persepolis which also provides trade routes. I also always play with the largest number of city states possible which is 43. I usually try to go for diplomatic victory at first but I usually can't help myself to conquer every city on the map as Venice, turning the whole entire huge-sized map purple.

The problem with puppets is that you don't control the build order. Furthermore city states are scattered around the map. Even if you take the 3 or 4 closest to you, it will be difficult to handle the logistics of your 'empire'. Those extra trade routes are great during peaceful times, but during wars impossible to defend since the AI will build cities between your capital and puppeted city states. Also more great merchant equals less great engineers/scientists. I don't fully agree with filthy in that the iroqouis are that bad. If you don't clear forest and build lumber mills you will have actually more production than that a workshop will give (given that you have a descent amount of forest near you).

2 questions. 1. Was the water inside the ring Island an inland sea or a lake? 2. Why didn't the AI realise that for most islands this was a naval game? Get naval superiority to continously bombard towns and armies, and you can dominate.

Any mass of water larger than- I believe- 8 tiles automatically is an ocean. Even if it's 10 tiles and not 8, that one landlocked mass of water didn't count as a lake.

the Iroquois is the most asshole civ and also one of the most aggressive ones, for some reason. I never see the celts win ;( Would be lovely if we could see a civ game with only lategamers. (No zulu, iroquois, assyrians, etc.)

When I was playing Civ5, I have terminated games after discovering the Iroquois were my neighbours (or even if they were in the same continent). They are one of these civs that spam cities without care and they UU can be built with no restriction. They extend like a plague, really.

I'm interested in both the groupings of the civs and the islands they start on. I figure the south-west island is naval civs, the northernmost island is "happy" civs, and then westernmost is Native-American, except for some reason Iroquois who are with Sweden, Russia, and the Celts, why? And then the southeast island appears to be the Middle East, except for the Zulu being there. As for the islands themselves, seems to correlate with the civs placed there, but doesn't seem totally balanced. Southwest gets the least out of the starting island for sure. Southeast seems okay (oasis gives gold and food while hills give production) and then I'm not sure about the others. A lot to think about for sure.

Second-worst? Iroquois aren't that bad, IMO. Mohawk warriors are much better than swordsmen and don't cost iron making them a threat in the early game. The Longhouse is great, too.
