CJAA TDI Turbo replacement 

You only do it once, ive bought a few TDI’s that suffered the same fate.

Because of oil in the charge pipe from bad previous turbo this happens?

Leaking oil? Most importantly make sure the feed lines fine, if it is make sure the drains good

In a perfect world you could keep the oil drain line off and see what comes out. Personally if the old turbo bearing isn't locked up from lack of lube you can assume its getting oil when priming the new one. Also make sure the pressure feed line doesn't get kinked if not replacing.

Nope this is a shop yoga mat now lol I think the cat scratched/tore it up so she ended up getting a new one

Doesn't hurt it to leave it off while cranking/running. Good to check for excessive soot or possibly oil leak from the new turbo

Stock I’d go Idparts or cascade German, if wanting a slight upgrade Xman or performance tdi

I looked quickly and didn't see any available. I'd imagine a hydraulic shop could match something up. Also mk4 TDI's have a flexible line available with different ends, not sure if these mk6 have them as well?

Josh, I know that with a turbo upgrade (larger) many kits recommend a braided turbo line.... If replacing stock with a stock turbo, would it make sense to switch to a braided oil turbo line to make future work easier, or don't bother?

I went to NAPA store and gave them a rough measurement and they made me a braided line for less than what the solid line would cost AND I really didnt have to worry about babying the hardline. It connects somewhere up front. Maybe right under the oil filter housing. Its been awhile since I made the repair.

@@JoshsJettas yeah mine has about half a pinky nail of what would be comparable to clutch material in a trans pan on the end of the drain plug. The turbo on the car I’m working on was starved for oil and it looks to be bearing material from the turbo

@Shane651001 right, what starved it for oil? I’ve done 2 of these cjaa’s with broken turbo shafts, I was going to split them and see what they looked like inside

@@JoshsJettas the nipple that threads onto the oil feed line had junk and goop in it. Lack of maintenance is what caused it. Can’t imagine what underneath the valve cover looks like. Going to run 3 quarts of engine oil and 1.5 qts of diesel fuel to try and flush the engine

I think I said in the video it was around the 175k km mark? I just got a second one with the same failure at 262k km. I though possibly the tune requested to much boost but I’m not sure, I’d like to take both apart here shortly to see if the bearing got hot.

@@AcmePhotoMalone stage 2 on this one, i tried buying it before the current owner and if I remember right the ad said turbo seized. Current owner was driving with the seized turbo until the shaft broke so don’t have a whole lot of back story.

Runaway is when it runs on engine oil alone without diesel, resulting in uncontrollable revving. Hydro-lock is when a liquid (water in this case) enters the engine, water is not compressible so the engine locks up and wont crank (or bends a rod). If ran on no oil (with oil light flashing) it'll probably lock the turbo up and damage the engine, to much might result in it burning some and wrecking the aftertreatment system.

After treatment as in the dpf and cats. It won’t run away if too much oil is added, only if the turbo fails and dumps oil into the intake.

With the basic maintenance they last a long time, I did a timing belt on a cjaa that had 525k km on it. Emissions intact engine ran awesome, the body was worse for wear though
