Y, a really good film. I think it was just too soon for a realistic Viet Nam War movie when this came out, so it flopped at the box office. People just wanted to be done with that whole war.
I had a short Hispanic Drill Sgt when I joined the Army back in 1985. That mean tough SoB smoked like a forest fire but could PT and run forever the hotter it got. He taught us all a lot!
Seen boys in company c. When I was a teenager R. LEE wasn't my Drill Instructor but the one I had in the summer of 83' was pretty damn close "ONCE AND ALWAYS"
@Old Corps Marine Not gone entirely Mr. Old Corps! LoL! Sounds just like what we told the Devil pups that came after us. It was always "tougher" in the "Old Corps". Had to walk barefooted, up hill to chow, both ways too! In '83, there were trips to the "whiskey locker" to get the crap kicked out of you..(no witnesses). Maybe not on P.I., but certainly at MCRD Diego...Where the "REAL" Marines were built!!! Semper Fi!
@Old Corps Marine DAMN "OCM" I forget about some post I still communicate with guys from my FMF days and the mention of "Mount MF" which was hell on a recruit but just part of the hump for a seasoned GRUNT NOMATTER WHERE HE DEPLOYED OR EVEN TODAY FOR A LONG DAY OF CIVILIAN WORK I'VE SEEN VIDEOS OF WM'S ON THE ISLAND WEARING CAMPAIGN COVERS AND PRETENDING TO BE MEN ONE OF THE REASONS I DIDN'T GO ARMY BACK THEN A CLASSMATE OF MINE GOT DROPPED FROM ARMY BOOT BY A FEMALE DRILL SARGEANT AND HE WAS SUPPOSED TO GO CORPS WITH ME BOTH MY OLDMAN 1950 AND TWO BROTHERS 1970'S WHERE PI GRADES I WAS CALIFORNIA SO HOLLYWOOD IT WAS A FEMALE COULDN'T HAVE RATTLED ME AT 0300 IN MY TEENAGE YEARS CAN'T DO IT NOW OH WELL THANKS DAD...STILL "ONCE AND ALWAYS"🇺🇸
Served in the good ole U. S. M. C... Now I can laugh when I see this, but as a 19 year old in 1979, (most drill instructors at the time were Vietnam vets) and they were pissed off at the whole world. I was scared, and thought I came to San Diego to die... A lot of guys say they would do it again... I would go see their shrink... Small note, best decision in life I've ever made... Uncle Sam's Misguided Children.. USMC..
Brian, I landed on PI on April 1, 1956, and three days later turned 19. I had been there the previous summer for two weeks of summer training with the Marine Reserve unit I was in, but in '56 I was Regular Marine Corps. It's been a long time since I've heard the phrase Uncle Sam's Misguided Children and it made me laugh. Our DI's were WWII and Korea. In the Reserves, we had a Gunny who had been in the second wave on Tarawa. Semper Fi.
@@danielrousseau4842 Wow... At least I got to go to Hollywood, and no sand fleas, although my first duty station was Guantanamo, and I got the pleasure for 6 hours on post everyday to deal with those nasty little things, but I could never imagine having to stand attention as long as we had to at times, being eaten alive by those little rascals. Thank you for sharing with me your story, and these memories you must have... Great generation back then...
@Old Corps Marine Thank you for sharing. The Marine Corps changes men's lives in a way that you can never explain to a person who didn't experience it. I too, was a train wreck about to happen, and I thank God all the time for how the Marine Corps absolutely changed me for the better, for life...
@@bryanmahon7866 We had the sand flies, but I'm told you guys had a murderous hill or two to deal with. There was always some guy in the platoon that would slap the sand fly and thought the DI wouldn't see him. DI'S ALWAYS SEE THINGS. THAT'S WHY GOD GAVE THEM 360 DEGREE VISION. Every maggot should understand and remember that fact from his first day in boot camp. Of course, the entire platoon suffered because of one guy's actions.
@Jimmy Jazz Jimmy, you definitely had different problems than we suffered. We used to say that Parris Island was just another level of the daily tide. There was high tide, low tide, and PI tide. Just sea-level flat, surrounded on all sides by salt-marsh that offered up a smell that we who were there will never forget.
You know I bet the difference is actually a pretty good representation of how drill instructors were at Vietnam. You had the new ones be like this in their first few months but as they see more and more of the soldiers they train end up in the Newspaper being KIA they slowly turn into the drill instructors in FMJ.
Awesome! He's young as shit in here. Another great one, Strother Martin. "with the Finklesteen shit, kid, SON OF A BITCH." One of my favorite SM lines. I knew Strother first from Cool Hand Luke, but tons of old tvs shows and westerns that he was in way before that film. Love the old film.
Terrible news that he"s no longer with us!but i know that wherever he's at now, he's doing what he does best.My condolences to his family and may his creator keep him in his loving hands....A Army Vet..
Well you can't get Lee to go out there and scare the hell out them right off the Bus !!? Then make some of the men cry in the first day.AHHH, I remember Paris island giant mosquitoes, humid weather and running our asses off every day.AHHHH, the memories. DAMN!! Those Drill Sgt's OOOHRAH.
Larry Geary Yeah he was real. Gunnery Sgt. R Lee Ermey who served 4 tours in the Vietnam War and was a Drill Instructor until This movie called The Boys in C Company. But he continued to serve until he was Honorable Discharged from the Marines Corps 1 year before he played in Full Metal Jacket .
Night Man...I am going to miss him. Great legacy in his movies and TV shows. He said he lost a lot of acting work when the Hollywood elites found out he was a conservative. Authentic actor. Bright man.
My first summer of OCS in Quantico 1980. GySgt Charles Ryan is the only DI that could hold a flame to Lee Ermey. They were one in the same. Anyone else remember him.
@Jimmy Jazz yes USMC was two summers, 6 weeks each summer.it was called Platoon Leaders Class program.resulted in being commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant when you graduated college.
When you are told to do so you will reach down by your right foot, pick up your bags, empty the contents on the table in front of you. You will empty your pockets and place the contents of your pockets on the table in front of you. Do it NOW!
That blackboard at 0:27. If you plan on joining any branch of service you can save yourself a lot of trouble in reception by reading the current contraband list for your branch and don't bring any of it. The current list for any branch is mostly the same as it is on the board in this clip but some things have changed. Just leave that stuff at home! You can have your teddy bear, picture of mom from her burlesque days and your crack pipe back when you get to your duty station.
When I left for Marine Corps Boot Camp, I brought my Driver's License and nothing else. Lol, I STILL got shit from the Receiving D.I.s. "Nobody fucking loves you, do they?". "You have no bitch back home because you're worthless". Ahh . . . good times.
Having grown up in a military family it was all I could do not to laugh at the TI;s going through basic. Did cost me some laps and nose to nose contact at times. Most of the time standing at attention, getting yelled at, I would just pinch the side of my legs to create enough pain not to laugh. Had nasty bruises on my legs most all of basic but it worked.
Our military has to be like that again. It's a disaster that those "leaders" are already interfering with the training and the way they talk with the privates. Now they're even getting rid of the shark attack...🚮
Stupid question is stupid ... Did Gunny ever get a posthumous/honorary promotion to Master Gunnery Sergeant, and if not, why not ... The man bloody well deserved it ...
He originally retired as a Staff Sergeant (E-6), but was made an honourary Gunnery Sergeant (E-7) in 2002. Master Gunny would be two grades higher still.
This movie was filmed in the Philippines. The boot camp scenes were filmed on a Philippine military base. I read somewhere the recruits in the background were actual Filipino soldiers going through boot camp.
Does Ermey kiss a guy like he did in Saving Silverman? I guess that's how real Marines act. Now half the stuff he said in FMJ makes sense. He was really, really gay.
@Jay Jay - go fuck yourself. You must be one of his old boyfriends. My sympathies. Maybe you can go to the medium Bruno did and give Ermey a special seance.
