Welcome to IndieWeen everyone! Where we take out $60 and get a bunch of cool indie titles instead of one lame AAA game. Remember Close to the Sun? Did you remember that it's already in your Epic Games Store library thanks to that summertime free games binge? You'd better go check just to be sure.
Close to the Sun is an indie horror game by Italian studio Storm in a Teacup that follows Rose and Ada Archer along with Daddy Tesla and a couple crazy dudes as they try to figure out what the heck happened aboard Nikola Tesla's massive art-deco ship, The Helios.
Yeah this was the game that everyone instantly compared to Bioshock when we all saw the trailer and there is a good bit of truth to that: Close to the Sun looks a lot like Bioshock, shares a lot of story elements with Bioshock, and even has a near-identical color palette to the titular 2007 masterpiece. We'll go into more detail in the video proper though

I don't know whether to comment on your weird flex about liking the EGS. Or whether I should comment about how you clearly intended to rile 'other' people up by blatant mischaracterizing them as an irrational hate mob. Because you're clearly doing both. Between ‘time bleeds’ and ‘time is not a river,’ here’s what I think it means: Time is not like a river that you can put a water wheel or a dam on to generate power, time is like a blood vessel or artery with hard walls that you can’t penetrate without damaging or destroying everything.

Close to the Sun is the reason why with every game I get, I try to put in 60 minutes of playtime. There are so many games we overlook that turn out to be hidden treasures such as Close to the Sun. I'm a big fan of Lovecraftian horror and the fear of time being inevitable, so the Time Wraiths were a fantastic enemy to me because of how disconcerting it is to think of something bleeding out of the pure confusion that is time to 'clean it up' in a sense.

Hey Charlatan Wonder, i tried making your breakfast tacos and i ended up making too many. (Roommate dipped out last second) Instead of tossing it out or saving the breakfast tacos, i elected to eat all six of them in one sitting, out of spite. Am i proud of myself? Yes. Do i regret not pacing myself and instead forcing the last two down as fast as possible? Also yes. Regardless, the recipe yielded amazing results and a mild food coma that lasted well over two hours. Next i know, I've awoken in a confused cold sweat on the floor, head spinny and perplexed by the fact that id apparently fallen asleep to OMD's "Organisation" album on loop. Tacos were solid though. 10/10. Can't wait for the next one. Also, loved the review. Got a niche for that particular visual aesthetic, so i may just snag the game.

My theory on the story is that the whole gameplay is one of many time loops that keep on repeating again and again and again, and always towards the end when everyone is about to die because the main character and tesla lives and goes back in time yadda yada yada, it resets the whole loop and that the guy who keeps trying to kill you is always alive and knows what's going on, and because he has been in so many time loops he goes mad and decided the only way to fix this is to kill everyone because if you the main character, tesla rose or anyone else is dead, no one can try to go back in the past and reset the time loop. As for those monsters, I believe they are trying to kill everything so that the time loop can stop and that time can smoothly run again.

I'm so happy to see a soo good review of this game. I had the possibility to work together with Storm in a Teacup team and it was some pretty good time with them. A couple of info: 1) tons of the images inside the game (posters for the theatre and publicity on little papers) are easter eggs based on the face of the team members. For example, the poster with the lady with red hair, is based on the CEO girlfriend. And the poster with the three singers, those are the CEO, Carlo Bianchi, the studio manager and the game designer. 2) a lot of people gave bad reviews because they say "it's like Bioshock, but where is the action?! Where are the weapons?". Well, that was a precise decision of the team. They wanted to create a claustrophobic and splatter horror, with the setting on a ship in the middle of the ocean. So a place where you CANNOT run away. Outlast? Just run away from the main gate, you son of the gun! But here on the Helios, you cannot run away from the ship unless you want to die in the stormy ocean. However, if they gave you a weapon, you're going to feel more relaxed because you can protect yourself. Sooo, no weapon for you, sir. Just save yourself during the game, because the game will not save you. Also because Rose Archer, the main protagonist, is just a journalist. She is not a member of the army, she is not trained to self-defence or weapon-use. P.s. check the quality of the ocean. It was entirely hand-made programmed by their lead-graphic-programmer, he is a freaking genious °w°

"Don't have access to an awesome physics engine like Frictional does..." They were using UE4, they have access to one of the most powerful physics engines in the industry, they just didn't make use of it in the same way.

Yeah, but they were using Unreal Engine 4.18 and older during development. I think the physics enginr was slightly more limited back then. It was still the derelict Physx 3 SDK basically because Nvidia limited Physx 4/5 for years for their Omniverse tools. And it was a really small team. Doing models on Blender is easier than doing physics. The game is also poorly CPU optimized as it is. Doesn't work in DX12 either, even if DX12 was supported since UE 4.9.

I'm not really sold on the idea of the super-boat-city being made by LITERALLY Nikola Tesla. If Rapture had been made by actually Ayn Rand, and not a spear alt universe version, it would've been seemed odd. Better to have a degree of separation between your crazy interdimensional time-cop monster plot and an actual person. That, and "DAE Tesla le world's greatest superscientist?" is a pretty generic internet hyperfixation

I think that maybe the anachronistic Art Deco style was intentionally used as a way to indicate how the people on the Helios were figuratively ahead of their time, but I definitely would've preferred an Art Nouveau direction as well.

It happens to be discounted on GOG for 10€ right now. The one thing i remember is that the game is pretty heavy on the GPU. If you have 2GB VRAM or less, you'll be in a world of trouble, and there isn't much in terms of quality scaling for lower end GPU, but if you have something vaguely comparable to GTX970 or GTX1060 or better, you should be fine. I actually find it amazing how Bioshock ran on Geforce 8600GT or Radeon 9500. As to long end credits including more publisher people than dev company people, that's actually quite normal, the publisher employees and contractors may be credited while putting a couple weeks worth of time into a given game, their attention is naturally divided into several projects, while the studio people put in years.

Oh cool, the One Electron Theory is actually a real thing but it's more of a "this is a neat thing that comes out of the math" theory and whether it's true or not changes literally nothing. Theory states that: Because a positron is completely indistinguishable from an electron moving backwards in time (and vice versa) it might be possible that there is only one electron constantly bouncing back and forth through time.

Nah I've had it for almost 10 years now. They let all the seniors in my high school who took cooking to order themselves a chef's coat regardless of how long they'd been in the program or level of experience. I took intro to cooking during my victory lap and I got me a nice coat while I experimented with putting things in a deep fryer .
