CNC Dust Collection part 2

In this part of the story, I connect a 6 inch dust collection line from the dust collector to the CNC spindle. I am taking a lot of care to make sure the transitions in the pipe are as smooth and sweeping as possible in order to keep the airflow up. I have made an arm above the CNC machine that will allow the dust collection pipe to follow the spindle in an arc. In the future, I plan to have 12 feet of movement in the CNC. The moving arm will allow the dust collection to follow the spindle with that much movement.

Very cool engineering with the additional wheels. My first thought was a small lip on the original beam, but the way you ended up doing is much smoother; very similar to a roller coaster As always, great content! It's always cool to see guys like you using a tool to make improvements for that same tool. For whatever reason I get a huge kick out of that.

Frank - You may want to invest in one of those baby cams that you can leave in the shop at night...just in case it does become sentient. At least you'll have a head start before the inevitable war against the machines.

That you were able to turn this out in the timeframe you did is simply baffling. I'm still trying to wrap my head around what you did and realize the time it would take me to engineer each piece, you were able to complete the project and edit video. Respect!

You could use non-flexible 4 inch hoses and fix the adaptor to the machine. I think that would be a little neater and it might improve the airflow even more. Anyway, its a nice design (although maybe a little bit over-engineered :) ).
@nevermindthebull0cks
@nevermindthebull0cks 7 лет назад
That's what I did. I have a 3 foot chunk of 4" pvc Coming from my dust boot and the hose clamps to it. The pvc just slips onto the dust boot nipple so I can just pull it off and clean my table/floor with it real quick. It was kind of a accident that I did it in the first place, but It's really handy.

I've watched every one of your build videos surrounding your shop and tools, as it's providing me a great deal of inspiration for my own dream shop. And I have to say, your narrative style is excellent. Very calm, relaxed, concise, and clear. Im really enjoying your videos. I think a lot of people outside the engineering world assume that a skillful builder/engineer gets it right first time but this is rarely the case. A lot of youtubers dont help this by obviously editing out all the problem solving along the way and just showing a seamless journey. I really enjoy the aspect of overcoming problems and that is where the real lessons are learned.

Thanks, Frank. I got a couple of good ideas from this for my dust collection. I have had a CNC router shop for 20 years and do contract work, so I have cut tons (literally) of Baltic birch and other plywood. I always cut my plywood conventionally rather than climb. I get a much better edge finish. When I cut solid wood, the climb cut gives the best finish. To avoid having to sand as much on your ply, try a conventional cut next time.

I always like to see how you solve problems. Nice build. Just a little info about collecting fine dust... the fine dust is much easier to catch than the larger particles because the fines carry much less momentum and are easily entrained in the air stream. Chips require higher air velocity for capture. I capture 100% of the fine particles with less than 100 cfm using a shop vac with the power turned down via PWM to lower noise and a dust shoe (verified using a laser particle counter). I would imagine that your setup should catch all the particles, large and small, with the flow rates you should have as long as the dust shoe doesn't have too much pressure drop.
@jeffeberl12
@jeffeberl12 7 лет назад
BUT, with the bristles, the big chips lose their velocity fast when they hit the outside.
@T70781
@T70781 7 лет назад
Jeff Eberl Yeah... that's why they are there. Without the bristles, most of the small particles would be captured but almost none of the larger ones.

Just because I've not seen it elsewhere. The reason it fell off the track is because when the extraction is on you're basically pulling the whole tube in the other direction to the airflow. It compressed at the flexable section and pulled it off the track. Apart from that. Its a pretty good solution to the dust problem.
