Mark, I know there is no such thing as standard lofts anymore but what sort of spin numbers should we amateurs expect from a standard,sic, set of irons assuming a reasonable strike of course. Would make a nice vid ok info for the masses.

My five iron has 27 degrees of loft and I hit it 160 to 170 depending on how good I'm swinging it. I went from playing the Wilson Staff di11 irons to the Wilson Staff fg tour f5 irons it really put my pride in check.

I’d love to see you put together a complete functional bag of only “7” irons all with different lifts and see how many 7 irons you could potentially play in your bag.

I think he means the old school lofted 7 irons vs the new. For example, a really old weak loft 7 might go 150 yards, and a 35 degree 164, 31 degree 178, a 27 like the video 190. You could have 4 7 irons in your bag.

I played an old offset 1993 wilson cb. Probably a game improvement of its time, though John daly played them.... Its a 36° 7-iron! You could go from the longer 37.75" shaft to the modern taylormade 36.75" shaft and cover quite a spread with the lofts.

155 yards Mark Only 155 yards Mark for 5 iron. Driver speed 85 tom87 max mph. I need more distance. I'm thinking a strong 7 iron will be easier to hit than a 5 iron because of the shorter shaft length. 150 yards out, surely a strong 7 iron will easier than 5 iron for me! Love the content. I have the one length version of these, my friend designs the medallion inserts goes cobra actually - and I absolutely love these clubs. Super forgiving and they're CANNONS when you connect. The crazy lofts are definitely a thing, but mine have high launching graphite shafts and the ball flight is high as hell, so with a good spinny ball, they absolutely stop on the green from 180y out

THANK YOU! It seems like all the other similar RU-vid channels poopoo Cobra clubs- and you don’t. Golfers are brand snobs and for varying reasons; heck, I used to be a Ping snob. Then I tried (and bought) the Cobra F7 One Lengths- and I will never buy another brand or any clubs but One Lengths. So I’d just like to say, “thank you for being fair to Cobra. They aren’t the biggest or most popular, but I think they put just as much R&D into their product as anyone- and from personal experience, their customer service is unmatched. And also thank you for being fair (and open-minded) to the one length concept, and by default, the golfers who have converted to it.” Keep up the great work!

TheGolfdaily he used to do demos at driving ranges around Toronto years ago. He’d scatter a bucket of balls around and hit them where they were lying with a 3 wood. He wouldn’t move the ball to a nice lie. I never saw one of his shows but I play golf with people who did. He shared the old Ben Hogan idea that a putt was only worth a half stroke or less. I don’t think he was a very good putter because of this. George Knudsen apparently had the same attitude about putting and that cancelled out his Hogan like ball striking. Every golfer of a certain age in Ontario has Moe Norman stories to share:)
@TheGolfdaily
@TheGolfdaily 4 года назад
@@timothydaniels504 Story of Moe Norman is worth making it into a Hollywood movie one day. A kind of golfing version of Rain Man or Forest Gump. There was a time when I was searching for a new golf swing, I was studying Moe's way of striking balls. I had some success especially with driver but eventually realized that it is not style of swing that makes a consistent ball striking but it is more a matter of who you are. Moe was a very special man with very special ability which was at the same time his disability. To strike the balls like he does, you need a little robot in your head telling you what to do.

Great point about knowing the loft of the club you are hitting. You should review the one length as well , I use F7 one length and am OK until I get to the 6 and 5 irons. So to know that you can get a performance out of the 4/5 iron whatever the loft would be helpful. They must have to do something different with the manufacture of them?

On the topic of number on the club vs distance produced, I went into Ping 410’s Irons from 5 to 9 in November. But knowing the lofts were at least one club number stronger than my old set I focus on how far each one goes and not ‘ Oh my 7 iron goes 165 !’ . Perhaps an option in the future could be to have lofts instead of numbers, like with wedges ?

Larry, it’s the longer shafts that make longer irons harder to hit. The cobra sz irons have standard length shafts it’s the lofts which are stronger. Currently hit 5 iron 170 yards total and 22deg hybrids 185 total distance.

I've just gone back to my 20 year old blades with a 28* 5 iron, it only goes 180 yards but the dispersion is tiny which means birdies. My 2015 cavity backs hav a 24* 5 iron and goes 220 yards but has a large dispersion and has a nasty flyer that can put me out of bounds over the green on a "good shot". There is no question in my mind, modern clubs that focus on distance are poison to my game. What's the point of hitting a long ball that you cannot control? The pursuit for length through a fake 5 iron is dumb, just change your swing if you need distance OR, controversial point here, use a LONGER CLUB, e.g. a 4, 3 or 2 iron instead of a 5 iron!!!
@davidgordon4386
@davidgordon4386 4 года назад
Absolutely...about the back edge. Why would you care? When I line up to hit a ball, all I see is the ball. I see the leading edge for a second or so as I square up the face. Look left to see if I am aligned and gauge distance. After that, all I see is the ball. Not the top line, not the back of the club, not the offset...Only the ball and the resting blur of a club behind it. And if it performs, It does not matter what I am using. It seems silly that all of these club pro's care about a top line.

If I buy an iron set in which the 5 iron is a 3 iron, the 7 iron is a 5 iron, and the 9 iron is a 7 iron, how the hell am I supposed to build the rest of my bag? The 9 iron goes over 150 simply because it has the loft of a 7 iron. Yet I can only play shots under 125 yards with my current wedges: 46ºW 120-125 50ºW 110-115 56ºW 95-100 60ºW 75-80 That's a 25-30 yard gap between 120-125 and 150 which is arguably one of the most crucial scoring distances in golf. I simply cannot understand why would they make things difficult for people.

Manufacturers should just put the loft on the bottom of the club. The number 7 in this set is now just a way of knowing it’s not a 6 or 5. It’s not compatible / compatible between sets. BTW a classic set to guys of my age used to be 2-PW or 3-SW and not 4-PW!!!

I think the club manufacturers are fairly marketing the clubs. They are distance, game improvement, player irons etc. I did not go in looking for a set of blades because I am not a good golfer. The better golfers are not going in and buying distance irons because they are good enough to shape shots and play to the number in front of them. The forgiveness of these clubs helps the average golfer hit the good shots to keep them coming back and to grow this great game we play. With that being said our typical 4some all have strong lofted clubs. Cobra SZ, Mizuno 919HM, TaylorMade M4, Callaway Apex16. Those are listed in order of handicap from lowest to highest in our group. And none of us pound our chest about how far we hit any iron shot. But you bet your ass we do when we catch a driver on the screws !!! Hopefully people stop this what loft is what and just go get fit to help them enjoy the game.

OK so two golfers enters a competition. One uses a traditional club like a Wilson Staff for example, and the other Golfer uses a super tech golf club like these Speedzone irons. So if the speed zone player won the competition then who would care what irons they used? All that matters is who won. A friend of mine does archery. He told me that; over the years, the technology of the arrow and the bow has increased enormously, but still it is only the most talented that make the olympic team. So what of a iron is now the loft of a 5 iron, the distance itself has not changed and you still have to hit the ball. All that will change will be that people will buy more specialist wedges - that only make the game more interesting. Perhaps the next thing will be that new golf curses will become more difficult.

However you look at it, it is the seven iron in that set and maybe thats all the manufacturers are saying? I would like to think we all understand that most sets, in the modern game, have different lofts to one another these days. You are very similar to the james smith pt(RU-vid personal trainer) who dispels so many fitness myths. You both give us so many facts without the sales rubbish without james smith pt's swearing lol

I found this review particularly interesting since I currently play the Cobra F8 irons. Certainly I would be interested in a separate one-length review. Thanks.

I switched to the SZ irons from the F8 irons. I wish I hadn't traded my F8's in. Even though the SZ iron is a couple degrees stronger throughout the set than the F8, the lower CG of the SZ keeps my yardages about the same. Forgiveness is about the same for me but the feel of the F8 is so much better.

Isn't it easier to hit this 7 iron to go 5 iron distance than hit an actual 5 iron?

I would like to see the one length just to compare if there's a difference in distance...I found there was but I'm not a line god like Mark... In the 4 and 5 iron the one length to me felt like a stiffer shaft and clunky

My 5 iron goes 170-175, if I hit it well. I go hybrid now, 25*. My set 5 iron is 26*. I wouldn’t be getting that 5 iron off the ground.

Titleist and ping are the German car companies of golf, functional efficient style. Where Cobra is the daft Italian sports car, beautiful and not afraid the push the boundaries.

Why dont they just get a 4 iron and stamp 9 iron on it. Bloody pathetic.

Damn. that 7 iron is like my 5 iron in loft. My 7 iron is 34 deg. Closest club in my bag that are comparable with the 5 iron is my 19 deg hybrid. I have 5-Pw in JPX 919 Tour.

Funny how a 31 year old guy is still considered the young "hip" guy with all the sub 25 year olds playing. Atta boy Rickie 😂👍

I noticed the Callaway Mavrik irons just added an ADDITIONAL gap wedge into the set to account for their ridiculously strong loft/club number designation, instead of bothering to "fix" the gapping issue that creates down the bottom of the set... so they offer 4-PW...AW...GW...SW _instead_ of 3-PW, GW, SW (same lofts). Ask Coach how he feels about that! 😉 Great stuff, guys.

Mark, with my older Mizuno MP-52 I carry 155. A couple of years ago I purchase TaylorMades M2 and carry the 7 an average of 165. I prefer the Mizuno MP 52. I control my overall distance more constantly with the MP-52’s. Comparatively, my TaylorMades M2 shafts are appox 1.5 inches longer. The TaylorMades M-2 gets substantially more roll ( not my preference). My personal preference is carry distance with minimal roll. Thanks Mark for the reviews.

Why not compare a one length 5 iron to a normal length 5 iron.
