As someone who's heard Freewill over 100 times, I'm starting to think the instrumental passage is TOO good... so good that people can't grasp how good it is. Each instrument by itself is already an overload. So it takes many listens to fully appreciate it all. I still get psyched by it.

This is one of those songs that will grow on you.... as catchy and as popular as it is. Listening to it with the volume turned up i still find my self engrossed with it. Particulary the middle part with the instrumental and geddy's bass in the background driving away and Alex leading the charge with that solo. Then coming out of it is pure bliss going into the line 'Each of Us, A Cell of Awareness'.

Nice - yeah, the more I listen to the solo break, after 40 years, I'm still hearing new things. IMHO, that 30 secs is one of the best examples of the Hard Rock genre in human existence. All 3 guys are just absolutely killing it. Alex's solo is out-of-this-world marvelous, Geddy's shredding the bass and Neil is being Neil - incredible fusion of 3 musical talents. During the live shows, this was the "we're not worthy" moment of the show with arms raised bowing.

Hey, huge thanks for reviewing this song! It's somehow appropriate that you posted this video on May 17, which happened to be my 53rd birthday. Why? Because this was the very first Rush song I ever heard. A friend turned me on to it back in 1980, when I was 14 years old. This song turned me into a Rush fan for life. And, perhaps more importantly, it's the song that made me decide to become a bass player. At that time, I was just beginning to learn to play guitar, and I don't think I was even really aware of the "bass guitar" as a distinct instrument. But I heard Geddy's bass during the instrumental section, and OMG, that was absolutely *the coolest thing I had ever heard in my life*. I fell in love with Rush and the bass guitar right then and there, and I've been a Rush fan and bass player for nearly 40 years now. But, dammit, I still can't play this song correctly. Almost, but not quite. That line, "If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice" - it was apparently a popular line tossed around the "hippie" community back during the time these guys were in high school (according to my stepfather, who was an actual hippie back then).

You’ll notice that ALL truly great bands whose music still lasts (Led Zep, etc) are comprised of members who individually possess extreme brilliance. No better example of this than Rush, where (aside from their unparalleled creative abilities) each member’s personal humility and good nature allowed them to work together and create masterpiece after masterpiece, decade upon decade. This band is a gift to humanity, both for their incredible music and lyrics, and for the inspirational way that they carried themselves in the glare of the spotlight for so long. @@AudiophileTubes I agree Working Man is raw and unsophisticated for Rush, but the live version done on their time machine tour 2011 is the best version, with the new intro, Alex going crazy, and of course, Neil elevating the whole song. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-sI5VuBzo-Qc.html

Coming to check out this reaction after the Otis Redding one in which you mentioned the "if you choose not to decide line." One great song leads to another. You gotta love the music rabbit hole. Thanks for sharing your journey.

Rush will have you guys reading 'Ayn Rand' before too long! I read all of Ayn Rand's work in my late teens and early 20s because of Rush 😁 they even named one of their albums after her novel 'Anthem'

@JD Chase Agreed. She was an arrogant egotistical know-it-all sourpuss that thought altruism is a character flaw. A horrible human being to know personally, or so I've heard.

Ayn L. Rand / Libertarians “There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year-old’s life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.” - John Rogers

Neil later said he was quite embarrassed about his Randian phase. Alex said not to worry, they didn't understand any of it , anyway. Geddy said, "The fuck you nerds talking about now?"

Epic song. So glad you did this. Try Red Sector A. About the holocaust drawing on the experiences of Geddy Lees parents both were in Nazi concentration camps. Very hard hitting lyrics with some phenomenonally emotive music. Great live too

I can't stop playing this song. I loop the solo section. Been listening to them since I was 12 in 1978.

I grew up listening to Rush. My early adult years were filled with Rush. 20 years Navy we lived off music, it was our only escape. Rush is a group this is considered almost HOLY, to people of their time. What surprises me is, you try to rate them. Spend 96 days at sea with one of your forms of nourishment is performers like RUSH. Being in the military you have limited choices. This song gave us hope, like you can't imagine.

Good Rush tune. If you like the wicked 3 piece bands guys , you have* to listen to The Police. Sting on vocals and bass, Andy Summers on guitar, and Stewart Copeland on Drums. ( Neil Peart says Copeland was influence on him) The drums will mesmerize you, while the bass will sooth your woes, Andy is perfect on guitar. I own the box set , I LOVE everything they ever did, and NO band will ever be/sound like The Police. IMO the separated WAAY too early, but hey, what can you do ? Too many songs to list, so you should listen to "Roxanne", one of the most popular, but I would also suggest : Beds Too Big Without You King of Pain Driven to Tears Bring on the Night Message in a Bottle Ahhhh too frustrating, seriously I could list 20-30 songs, I just hope, even if you never record it, please listen to The Police, you will not regret it. Peace

Oh, dear God, NO! If not the most overrated band ever---Fleetwood Mac and U2 are perhaps worse---then they are certainly in the race! Good grief...the Police. Yuck...

From my limited knowledge of Rush, this is my favorite. I love the lyrics and especially Geddy's delivery. The instrumentals often remind me of jazz - it's like listening to each instrument playing their own song and yet they're cohesive. I give it a nine. Anytime you wanna waste a few hours talking about free will, let me know. I'll need a bottle of Crown Royal for fortification though. 🤓 🥃
