I was surprised just how good the 4k video quality was of the Panasonic Lumix DMC-Fz330 so I have uploaded some sample footage along with comparison recordings made with the Panasonic DMC-G7.
I’ve also highlighted some major short comings that this camera appears to have. I’ve only had the camera a few days, so these are my initial findings.
The first part of this video shows sample footage in a variety of situations and conditions such as good lighting and low light. Part two has examples of telephoto, close-up, depth of field and bokeh and compares the fz330 to the G7. I have included the audio, recorded with the built in mics, so this can be compared as well. I finish with more Fz330 footage.
The difference in image quality between them is small, the Fz330 performs better in low light than the G7 which had more noise. However the FZ330 had major focus problems especially wide-open at f2.8, which very often was out of focus. Another issue I found is using a centred focus point the camera repeated focus on an object closer to the camera and not on the area that was selected, this was more noticeable at f2.8 which. The same tests was done with the G7 which had none of these problems.
Another failing of the camera, which is also hampers the Fz1000, is camera movement. This is more noticeable with a static object and when the camera is mounted on a tripod. This may be due to the built in stabiliser, but I’m unsure. Annoying as these problems are in most circumstances they would be less noticeable and the benefits, such as having a power zoom and a long focal range, as well as the reasonable cost, still makes this camera a very good choice. Avoid using the Fz330 at f2.8 and instead stop down to f4 or f5.6 and I think you get great recordings. Have a look at the video, which has been upload in 4k, and judge for yourself.
I have uploaded a new version with a side-by-side comparison of the FZ330 and the G7 and GH4 with the Leica 100-400 lens. • Comparing image qualit...

For taking strictly video, of guitar playing / music videos, would you recommend the G7, FZ300 or a go pro style? Audio will be recorded seperately. Great video, btw. Just for info, I have never owned a camera or edited video before.

Hey I have been watching your videos but have a dilemma and thought you might have the knowledge to help! Should I purchase the fz80 for it’s good 4K and great zoom or fz300 for the similar reasons but also the g7 for the great 4K and the only problem is the lacking zoom. I really like the zoom on the fz but the interchangeable lenses on the g7 is future proof. I want to shoot video and some photo and do you know which I should go for and any zoom lenses over 200mm for under £150 for the g7? Great videos
@DiscoverNature
@DiscoverNature 6 лет назад
For outright image quality the G7 is the best of these three. It can be bought with a really good kit lens the 12-60. But adding a telephoto lens is going to push up the cost. Personally I like the power zooms on the bridge cameras. The fz80 has a 20-1200mm lens, think how many lens you would need to carry to match this range with a G7. For the money the F80 gives you a camera with great video quality and good photos. It uses a sensor with 18 megapixels which is more than the Fz330 which is only 12 megapixels. The Fz80 doesn’t have a flip out screen like the others, but is has an easy to see LCD, its good quality and you have a view finder too. It has a built microphone but no mic input option. It has nearly all the features of the other cameras, including shooting jpg and raw. I hope this helps. If you are still unsure then have a look at my channel, as well as my video tests I have also uploaded a photo comparison for these three cameras. I will also be uploading a new test comparing them to the Panasonic Fz2500.

Good film footage and thanks for sharing. Having a hard time deciding between the FZ330 and G7 for my outdoor filming. Most of the time I will be in the mountains with possible rain, wind and snow so was keen on the FZ330 due to its weather proof body but concerned due to smaller sensor size. Looks like for 4K filming there is not much in it really. The one thing that I am not looking forward to is learning to use the camera as I have been just using a GoPro for the last year. Is it easy to setup and use? Atb Ray.
@DiscoverNature
@DiscoverNature 8 лет назад
Both cameras are easy to set up, they have the same menu system shared by most of the recent Panasonic cameras and have IA ‘Intelligent Auto’ if you prefer to leave everything up to the camera. They have pretty much the same options including time-lapse, however the FZ330 also has slow motion recording. The sensor size of the FZ330 doesn’t appear to have any drawbacks over a larger sensor and having more depth of field is a definite benefit in many situations. Fortunately, I’ve not needed to test the FZ330’s weather proofing so far. But I’m hopeful that it will offer reasonable protection, although it will never be as robust as a GoPro.If you are out filming for any length of time then it’s worth investing in some extra batteries. The FZ1000, FZ330 and the G7 all use the same battery and they will give you about 1 to 1.5 hours of recording. Like all cameras and camcorders the built in microphone picks up wind noise, even on a calm day, a bit of fake fur placed over the mics will help to reduce this.The FZ330 should be a good choice, it can be used as a point and shot camera but when you want to get more out of it, it also has many of the features found on the GH4.

Great footage. Thanks for sharing. FZ330 : Is the stabilization noisy as on the FZ1000 ?
@DiscoverNature
@DiscoverNature 7 лет назад
Hi, thanks for the feedback. Are you referring to the sound the stabiliser makes? There was a tendency for the built-in mic on the FZ1000 to pick up this sound. With the FZ330 if you listen closely to the camera you can just hear the stabiliser but I’ve not noticed it on any recording using the built-in mic. However, I always use a tripod so the stabiliser may be a bit louder when hand held. Also, to reduce wind noise I generally plug in an external microphone.

Being photography enthusiasts I wanted to have your opinion for a used buying advice: G7 + olympus 45mm f1.8 + samyang 16mm f2 + filter ND for 700 € Or pentax k5II + 50-200WR for 420 € Or pentax k5II + tamron 18-250 for 470 € To finish a bridge Lumix fz300 for 450 € I currently have two film SLR. • pentax KX with three fixed focal length pentax (50mm f1.7; 135mm f2.5; 28mm f2.8) and gadgets such as focal doubler, macro adapter ... • Zenith-E with a helios 44 58mm f2 and a telemar 200mm f5.6; cordially

@DiscoverNature 7 лет назад
Hi, I have not tried a Pentax k5ii. But if you are mainly interested in a camera for taking photos then the G7 is going to be better than the Panasonic’s FZ330. The Olympus 45mm lens would give you excellent picture quality but a lens like a 35-100mm F4-5.6 or a 45-150mm F4-5.6 would give a more useful range of focal lengths. They may be low cost but they can still produce good quality images. A lot will depend on the type of photography you do. As you are upgrading from a film camera then I would recommend buying new. Something like the Panasonic Lumix FZ200 or a Sony RX100 mk1. The image quality of these cameras will be a major set up from any old SLR including recent digital SLRS and have excellent quality lens. They also cost less than the cameras you have listed. I hope that helps and doesn’t confuse you even more!

superbe quality,one question,on almost any video i seen shoot on the fz 300 there are some wobble/jello issues,what is the reason for that? no ND filter or it happens when zoomed out? otherwise the images are awesome,but that wobble is really annoying,not here on your footage! only a bit on the closeups where you mentionned the rose on grave should be in focus...anyway,fantastic footage!
@DiscoverNature
@DiscoverNature 7 лет назад
Hi Jan, as I always use a tripod I have not noticed it at all. It might be because a lot of my shots are either static or only moving slowly. A lot of the video cameras have an issue with jello when the camera is moved while recording. The built in stabiliser in these cameras can also cause a lag while it tries to catch up with the movement, causing the image shift or wobble.The problem I noticed appears to be a separate issue with these bridge cameras, where at maximum zoom there is a very small amount of movement. I have a suspicion that it is the vibration from the motor in the camera, but that’s a guess. The FZ300, the FZ1000 has this problem and it looks like the FZ2000 may have this problem as well. Thankfully it is only noticeable when filming a static subject and in most recordings it’s unlikely that anyone will see it.Thanks for your comments, I thinks it a really great camera. I’m will be uploading a comparison test I have just done of the FZ330 vs the G7 with the Lumix 100-400 lenses.

@PintoBlades

I noticed the same issue when people are moving the camera around so fast. I think the best technique is static shots and slow pans whenever possible. I was looking at a motorized pan and tilt system for a 100 bucks that you can mount to your tripod. It sure makes a difference in smoothing out moving shots. However, it's probably best for nature and wildlife shooting. To slow for sports I think. I just ordered this Fz300, good to see what it can and can't do well. I hope I enjoy it. Anything is better than my Flip camera! LOL

Good afternoon! Tell me please, was the video recorded at the same distance to the object by these cameras or on different? To get such a bokeh on the FZ-330 you need to move away or not?

All of the comparisons in this video are all shot from the same distance. You can see the difference in depth of field between the Fz330 and the G7 in my video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-M_i8B1p_Egk.html. The fz330 allows me to use a much lower aperture like F3.2 so I can get a similar out of focus look.

Hello, I need to buy a camera by tomorrow. I would use 80-90% of the time recording 4K videos. Which camera would you prefer? G7, AX53, FZ1000, LX100, RX100 Mark 4, DMC-FZ330? Any better choices that I missed under $1000? I excluded the A6300 since the body is just $1000. Thanks!
@DiscoverNature
@DiscoverNature 7 лет назад
It is really difficult to say one camera is better than another, it depends on the type of video you plan to take. All of the 4k video cameras and camcorders will take great quality videos. Probably the biggest difference is going to be camera size, zoom range and price. The FZ1000 is a big camera and the RX100 is tiny.If you don’t need a long focal length then take a look at the Panasonic LX100. It should give you the best video quality and picture quality for the money. I personally like the FZ330 which is what I use most of the time, but I have no idea what the photos are like. For me ease of handling and flexibility is important. I need something with a long focal length for shooting at a distance, can shot close up and also take wide shots. Plus the FZ330 has a flip out touch screen, custom controls and is still fairly small. Best advice is to view one at a local store. Good luck with you choice.

@DiscoverNature

Thanks for the comment. Apparently, the camera doesn't use image stabilization when recording 4K video, but I think it may still be running. I wish there was a way of totally disabling it as I wouldn't normally use it when shooting video. However it could be something else causing it. I wonder if anyone else has noticed the same problem, my Fz1000 had the same issue.

Image stabilisation is turned off on all of the videos and is automatically disabled when recording in 4K video. Continuous focus is also off. The FZ330 also had the latest firmware preinstalled. I'll try and run a few tests to see what causes or cures it.

I think it still uses the 3-axis stabilization when shooting 4K. Maybe in menu there is some option to turn it off completely (unless you had done it).

@DiscoverNature

Hi, I personally found I got the sharpest results with the Fz300 when set at an aperture of F4 or F5.6. I had varied results at F2.8, sometimes sharp sometimes not. But I have only ever tested the one camera, yours may be different. I also like to keep the ISO as low as possible. If you are getting lots of noise when using auto then try setting an upper limit to prevent the ISO going too high. Finally, for a sharper image it helps to get closer to the subject. For most of these shots I was fairly close, it makes a big difference to the amount of detail you can get. And reminder I don’t always get great results - online you only get to see the best stuff!

Hi! It's possible to use manual focus in the fz300? Thank's!
@DiscoverNature
@DiscoverNature 7 лет назад
Yes, but it is difficult to get accurate focus quickly because it has a small dial on the side of the lens that you have to continually turn for it to focus, you cannot turn it slowly like a conventional lens. However, it does have focus peaking and a quick focus button that can be used in manual. It can also be set to magnify an area of the image up to six times, while manually focusing, to make it easier to see what is in focus, but this only works when it is not recording. So it is fine for static objects that give you time to adjust the focus. I hope that answers your query.

Nice footage-not much in it really, both nice and clear. Just a quick tip; usually for video you should use double what the frame rate is otherwise movement can look too jerky (e.g. if your frame rate is 25p, use 1/50th sec).
@DiscoverNature
@DiscoverNature 8 лет назад
Very true, in an ideal situation you would want to aim for this. But to use a slow shutter speed on a bright day I would need to use a neutral density filter. I struggle to see if something is in focus even without an ND, so I don’t use one unless the subject is moving quickly. Thanks for the comment and the tip.
@koolkutz7
@koolkutz7 8 лет назад
Discover Nature Yes you are dead right. That's the problem with using ND filters-I know when I tried to use a variable one on my FZ200 it was pitch black and the camera could not focus properly. That's why I mostly use my Canon Legria HF G30 camcorder now for filming; it has built in ND filters so I can pretty much use any aperture and still keep shutter speed constant-works brilliantly.

I have serious doubts between buying a 100-300 panasonic lens for my G7 or a fz300 or fz80. I love my g7 but I am starting to shoot surfers videos and photos (4k photo mode is great for this) and my 45-150 lens is a little short. with a longer lens I could be more comfortable and look for a further spot with shade.
@DiscoverNature
@DiscoverNature 7 лет назад
Hi Jan. Are you hand holding or using a tripod? With the fz330 there is no image stabilisation in 4k. Whereas with the 100-300 there is a switch to turn this on, however I never tried image stabilization as I use a tripod. Personally I like having the power zoom of the FZ cameras it’s much quicker and easier to use. But if you already have a G7 and can pick an older 100-300 there is no reason why you cannot get good quality shots, as long as you have good quality light and fit a lens hood. Shooting at a distance will always be a challenge for any lens/camera and you will generally get better image quality by getting closer if you can, but I realise that that is not always possible. The fz80 might be solution, but I haven’t tested it. It doesn’t have a mic socket or a flip out LCD but does have 4k and an incredible optical zoom range. It is also cheaper than buying a lens, so I can understand your dilemma! For photos the G7 is going to be the best quality.
@jangarcia1338
@jangarcia1338 7 лет назад
Thanks a lot for your fast answer. If I can i'll handhold as it is way faster changing from one surfer to the other. However, what I have noticed in many videos with these fz cameras is that when shooting very far away, you see like a hazy misty effect more or less like when you see hot asphalt in the summer (don't know if you get what I mean).
@DiscoverNature
@DiscoverNature 7 лет назад
The issue I have had with the FZ1000 and the FZ330 cameras were at maximum zoom there is a tiny amount of movement - which looks a like a heat haze. With a moving subject like waves you are less likely to notice it but with static subjects you can. Stopping down does appear to help a bit, but I have never seen this with the G7.

It wasn’t the result I expected, I thought the smaller sensor on the Fz330 would struggle in low light, whereas it was the G7 that had more noise. If I can, I will upload some examples, however I think the compression used by RU-vid videos may prevent the noise from showing, but I will give it a go. Hi, both cameras were set on standard profile with no adjustments - all on zero. The G7 luminance levels is set to 16-255. Idynamic is turned off as this can recreate halos. I use exposure compensation to correct the exposure if the camera is under or over exposing and I have listed this on video. Colour balance between cameras is similar, but the FZ1000 is a closer match to the G7. I make very few, if any, adjustments in post-production and none of these clips have been altered.
