Storing them together in one container could have had effected one then the other??? I have made 3 different recipes for homemade gelli plates, 2 with different amounts of alcohol, glycerin and gelatin, the other with the sugar and no alcohol, I never refrigerated any of them, they have lasted and I have had no mold on any of them. I think I like one with the alcohol better, the plate seems to hold up better, the sugar one tends to tear more easily. Just thought I add my experience.
I made one with a pkg of gelatin per 1/4 cup water. I made one to fit a plastic tray from the dollar store, with painter tape around the edges to keep the paint off. I stored it in the fridge. I re-melted it every couple of weeks when it became difficult to clean. I kept it going for about six months and decided to buy one when Blick put them on special. The best thing about the homemade gel plate was that the paint did not dry up and cause the paper to stick. I haven't made one since, the Gelli Art one is so easy to use.
What would happen if you don't store them together. If the sugar is supposed to prohibit molding wouldn't the one without sugar mold and spread to what ever is in the container?
You would surmise that if sugar was a mold-inhibitor, that there would only be mold on the plain one. However, I cannot even believe that SUGAR prohibits the growth of mold. ??? That sounds like wonky science. I'd rather invest in the glycerine and not have to worry about it!
Hey Jenny...Lindsay (the frugal crafter) spoke to a scientist and has an easy homemade recipe on her channel that will not mold, and she explains why. Thanks much for the effort!
