Concept2 Rower Bungee Replacement

Got a rowing machine during the pandemic as the gym was off limits. It has proved quite useful during the 4300Km we have put on it so far.
Unfortunately, the bungee cord that retracts the handle was shedding thin strands of rubber thru the woven outer casing. We had found about a dozen or so short 4 inch lengths of the rubber under and inside the rower.
As the machine is less than a year old, Concept 2 sent us a replacement free, but even so, their spares are quite reasonably priced. The bungee would have been about $5 + shipping +tax.
Anyway, they did provide instructions, but I thought I would document the replacement for future use, so I know how to do it next time, without having to rely on memory :)

Just under a year of a brand new C2 I purchased during Covid, started shedding elastic strands. Concept sent me a replacement and installed it today with the video instructions you provided. I am an 'WH' category rower and technically challenged. I could not have done it without your help. Thank you!

I'm just so glad the video helped. I had a feeling that the pictorial help sheets that C2 gives out with the new cord would not be enough, so I was looking for the tricky bits as an aid to help me in the future, along with everyone else who may be in the same boat. The new cord has been great so far, although I had to stop using the rower just before Xmas to have knee replacement surgery. At 7 weeks post that, plus an MUA, I still can't bend the knee far enough. It's going to be a slow recovery. I may have to start just using arms and back. Couple of other videos I did here. Might be helpful. (I didn't quite get the scroll layout right, but...) ru-vid.com/group/PLWHom5FLIC6uSzeDBUBVG7G9JQ08hlI7a

@@richbinaz now On to your oiling video. I was not aware of the 50hr service. Hope your knees is up to full motion soon!

@@arax2470 Hi Arax, yes it is one of the few things that need to be done on a regular basis. Last time I did the oiling I over did it and it caused a mess. I keep a piece of hardboard under the front half to sop up any spills. Here is their maintenance page... www.concept2.com/service/indoor-rowers/rowerg/maintenance

Wow. Yours went bad in < 12 months? Mine is at 27 months and I think that is terrible. I am very disappointed that C2 shipped us rowers that have a defective part. You would think they would have done a recall of sorts and automatically shipped out replacements.

Great video. A shock cord on one of our rowers snapped and I had to replace it, video was super helpful.

Glad it helped. You should try the scroll housing next, keeps you cool while rowing :) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DfeXKF-uJWw.html I may have to fix the errors in the instruction sheets though :O )

Maybe in the future, thinking I will replace the shock cord on our older rowers, really makes a a huge difference. Rower runs nice now.

I appreciate your video. Easy to follow along and to the point. My rower is 11 years old and the shock cord finally popped. Easy to replace with your video!

Have to agree with the comments below. Really helpful and clear - and at a pace i could follow :) Appreciate you taking the time to talk through what you're doing...

Thanks! To me it looked like the picture instructions may fall short. Nothing like recording doing it for the first time and discovering the little nuances. Glad it helped.

The instructions C2 provide are comically bad. Of course it’s not too hard to work out but you’d imagine a well edited instructional video in this day and age. Thanks for taking the time. I just didn’t want to start the job then regret halfway through so rehearsal via watching is a great aid.

Good Luck, it isn't that bad of a job. Hopefully I pointed out the tricky bits.

What on earth is that cardboard business you put over the perf?

Good Question! It's a crude scroll housing, made from paperboard things such as cereal boxes and empty beer cases. What does it do? When you spin the concept 2 rower, you are actually spinning a large "squirrel cage" fan rotor. It pumps air from inside to outside. The perforated sheet wrapped around the outside acts as a diffuser, to slow the airflow down and stop curious fingers from getting damaged when they are poked into the fast rotating fan. So the scroll housing collects the air that is pushed out thru roughly 1/2 of the perimeter and redirects it towards the rower as a cooling flow - evaporating sweat etc, etc. Here it is ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-dvqM8gfpxK8.html Want to make one? Here is roughly what I did - not a true scroll, but close enough. And I do make errors, because I'm human. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DfeXKF-uJWw.html Here is another handy tool I use for chain oiling - every 50 hours ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-aWp1NohmJ5s.html

Thanks but that looks ridiculously difficult and I am very appreciative of your efforts but no way I could manage this replacement on my own. I’ve been happy with my Concept 2 but my rower is 27 months old and I never would have bought it if I thought it was going to require this so soon. I cannot believe they use such cheap material that breaks down so quickly. Very disappointing C2.

They know they got a bad batch of bungees and are replacing them free depending on the serial numbers, but obviously they can't install them with only one plant in Vermont. The pictorial instructions that came with the new bungee didn't cover everything, which is why I did the video. Even if you have to pay for the bungee, the price of all their spares are cheap.
@sotampacane
@sotampacane Год назад
@@richbinaz yeah. I’m aware they can’t send out someone but what your video suggests is beyond my competency level. You seem to understand how this all works. Until this afternoon I have no clue what the bungee/shock cord is or does. I still don’t. All I know is my machine is essentially in need of surgery and I’m not a surgeon. I’m sure once I get it fixed I will feel better but for now I’m bummed If I’ve been seeing these threads for months a few at a time, how long before the cord just breaks?
@richbinaz
@richbinaz Год назад
@@sotampacane The cord provides the force needed to return the chain into the body and keep it taught, so it doesn't slap around. Though there is an element of rowing technique that helps stop it slapping around as well. If it were to continue shedding, the force would become reduced and eventually the chain would not return into the body on the recovery stroke. This would happen before it broke - not sure it would actually break as the sheath covering the rubber fibers would still be intact.
@sotampacane
@sotampacane Год назад
@@richbinaz Thanks. Despite the rubbery threads increasing, my rower for the most part seems to be operating fine. I haven't noticed any difficulty with the chain during recovery but will be more aware of it. On Monday I will call C2 and have them send me the replacement and then use your video as a guide to getting this done. I am grateful that you've taken the time to reply. I guess once I pull it apart I'll have a better sense as to what the shock/bungee looks like and actually does. Hopefully I can get this done without all the drama I've created the past 24 hours. Clearly this isn't in my comfort zone.
