Sailing on my own to Darwin today. Not much wind so I decided to see how well I can tune the sails to get the maximum out of my Crowther performance catamaran.
I had a sea bird come land on deck. I named him Fred and he stayed with me for 2 days.
This was quite a challenging passage to do solo as there was lots of navigating to do, lots of tidal currents to deal with and shifting winds. I love a good challenge though.
Join me for this passage across one the most remote places in Australia.
Thanks for watching

Started the Fanny Bay Yacht club 57 years ago in a bunker just after i got out of Fanny Bay Prison for a drunken brawl with some TIs , Oh the memories , A young nurse from the hospital died from a sting , Terrible death , couldnt do anything for her , Still makes me sad today . Hey great speeds , Used to race on a 55footer cat with a meter wide wing mask on a swivel > Never sailed dead down wing , Congats on the kid .

Coffee would taste even better if you START heating the water with the grounds already in there (cowboy coffee). Much richer but smoother, and brown-ish in color. Only need an open pot for ease of cleaning. Careful it can cause foam to flow up onto your stove though. Worth the extra work IMO.
@SailingLearningByDoing
@SailingLearningByDoing 9 месяцев назад
I've got a taste for the way I do it now. The whole point is that there are no extra steps. I love a well made coffee and dont mind paying for a good one now and then but while sailing, simple is best. I have an aeropress onboard but rarely use it. Marie drinks tea so the coffee is just for me.

Yes Trade Runner did some real awesome speeds this trip wow. And you arrived in Darwin perfect timing it seemed. Okay catch you later and again Congrats

What are the benefits of the rotating mast? Is it necessary for a cruising boat, even a quick cruising boat like this beauty?
@SailingLearningByDoing
@SailingLearningByDoing 9 месяцев назад
Having the mast rotate is all about airflow over the sail. Rotating the mast actually makes it part of the sail area. Imagine on a normal mast, the wind has to around the mast before attaching to the sail, thus reducing efficiency. In really strong wind the mast alone is my 4th reef

Vernon, you often talk about degrees...120 degrees, etc...I love your channel but know nothing about sailing.. Can you please explain degrees...I know 360 degrees in a circle... but where is the wind coming from in relation to the degrees....Is the way the boat pointing, is that 0 degrees??..Soz for silly question, but I gots too know man...lol Keep up the great work
@SailingLearningByDoing
@SailingLearningByDoing 9 месяцев назад
Great question Dale. There are 2 ways I'll talk about degrees, our boats heading and the wind direction. You're right, a circle has 360 degrees, so does a compass. 360 is due north, 180 south etc. If our heading is 270 degrees it means we are sailing due west. When talking about the wind its in relation to the boat. If I say the wind is coming from 270 then its coming from my left/port side( we call that a beam reach), if its coming from 180 then the wind is coming from directly behind me. Its easier to understand at a diagram. Hope this helps

Vernon, what kind of psychopath are you? Get a mocha pot. :-) Same level of work but better coffee . I think you might be able to move your anchor roller to the back of the trampoline maybe? Some catamarans do that.
@SailingLearningByDoing
@SailingLearningByDoing 9 месяцев назад
But its not the same level of work at all, that the point! A mocha pot is double the amount of steps for about 20% better taste. It just doesn't make sense.
