Thank you for mentioning the Genesis 6 button controller! I am so sick of reviewers ignoring it's existance and criticizing the genesis for its lack of needed buttons
True but some kids could not affort more controllers so back than even in 94 many were stuck with the original 3 button controller. Me and one guy I know in my place both had a SNES with one controller if I wanted to play multiplayer with him I would need to bring my controller at his house.
@@paradoxzee6834 I was stuck with the 3-Button controller back in the 90s, in fact we had TWO 3-button controllers for Genesis. Not only were they rare to find in stores, they cost way too much or were sold out.
@@paradoxzee6834 Nah, if you could afford games, you could afford a 6-button controller. It was essential for some of the later ones. I was a Sega kid and I made sure I got one and can't really understand why anyone wouldn't have wanted to do the same at the time.
The Genesis version actually has much more precise controls than the SNES version. The SNES version feels slippery but in the Sega version, Simba stops on a dime. It feels much better.
Especially on the hippo tail level (Just Can't Wait To Be King) - the SNES version seems to need much more precise timing than the Genesis version when hopping from tail to tail.
'Tight' vs slippery controls are really hard to describe but you KNOW the difference by feel. I thought almost every 'genesis vs snes' port had way better control on genesis
Was watching some of your older episodes again, and this one has always been a favourite. The sheer look of shock and disgust on Wendy's face when Greg executed his admirable yawn-belch combo had me howling! Add in a classic Kirk Vanhouten line, and a crap-throwing ape, and you have comedy gold 😂
99/100 times you are correct guys, but this time you weren’t. As some other people saying in other comments, you didn compare Simba’s roar in sound effects which are better on Genesis and gameplay on Genesis is truly better in many ways. As you said in lot of your videos, gameplay matters the most and Genesis have the better gameplay. So I think this time you were wrong. Keep up the good job you are doing. ✌️
The SNES version’s samples sound really terrible! I’d rather have the Mega Drive’s FM Synthesis and limited sampling than the SNES’s awfully compressed and rough sound.
The classic yawn arm around the chick move infused with a burp had me rolling. One of the best episodes yet! I always thought the Sega version had better music and of course, better resolution, but whatever. It's a great game, no matter the platform.
I'm surprised you guys didn't even mention cub Simba's roar on both games. The roar on Sega sounds like the roar in the movie while the SNES just sounds like a kitten. Small detail I know, but you guys still mentioned small details like that in your previous episodes so I wonder why you didn't do the same here. I R DISAPPOINT Now that I've gotten that small detail out of the way that won't be mentioned ever again, great work as usual. And for the first time (not counting the times when your Next Video Hint would just be "Movies" or "Cartoon" or something that could mean hundreds of things), I'm stumped on what the next video could be
The roar was immediately annoying along with everything being 'cool' having played SEGA first. You're not alone, it was wicked distracting and immediately second level on the ostrich killed the SNES version for me. This is one of the times I think they were wrong in their decision.
The SNES version has some of the worst collision detection I've ever seen in a video game. The "I Just Can't Wait To Be King Level" is a prime example.
Going back and watching some of these old videos, I can't believe you guys still only have 60k subs. I look forward to every one of your videos, even now, absolutely crazy.
Honestly, it really is impressive just how close they really got the two versions. Also, I never knew this game was six-button control compatible! That's rad
I'm actually blown away by that sound on the SNES. It's a bit crackly, but man do they utilize that console's sound chip. I grew up with the Genesis version, so that's all I know.
Gameplay has a slight edge on Genesis. Apparently there's a jump at the beginning of Hakuna Matata level which is pretty frustrating to pull off on the SNES but on Genesis, they added an animal with a swingable tail to make it more fair. That coupled with being able to see more of the screen makes the Genesis version a less frustrating experience.
Better sound and music is a big plus, but I think better gameplay is more important and with that cropped screen I might think best gameplay would be the deciding factor vs better sound.
I'm kinda surprised the SNES version won. To me, the music in both games is near identical with only a few minor differences, and the sega version has better graphics, and I think a game having good graphics is more important than it having good music. So if it were me, best game would've gone to sega.
Circle of Life definitely sounds better on SNES, but most other themes were more lively on the Genesis IMO. Can't wait to be King sounds boring and muddy on the SNES compared to the Genesis which sounds a lot more expressive and goes a pitch higher in the second half just like the original.
@@Maru96 Genesis music tends to be sharp, gritty and clanky. SNES music tends to be more orchestral and subtle. Although the quality of Genesis music and especially sound effects tends to be worse, even as a SNES fan I tend to find it a refreshing change every once in a while.
I felt like the SNES music and sound feels hollow. The Genesis definitely felt more rich. I definitely preferred some of the songs on Sega too. The vocals push the SNES ahead though when they’re present. That’s something you didn’t get often at the time these games were released. I guess it’s six if one half a dozen of another.
Especially when they played Can’t Wait to Be King(Genesis version actually played the whole song). I grew up with the SNES, but I found the Genesis’ soundtrack of this game to be more lively and upbeat.
Something I seem to notice quite frequently is that whenever they do these games it's always the Super Nintendo game that crop is there ever a Sega game that's cropped instead of Super Nintendo?
Hehe.. Almost every SNES game has lower resolution than a standard display. So the image is cropped compared to Genesis or stretched to fit the screen. It's a flaw that always existed but nobody talked about back then.
The drawing of the Lion King had me dying!! haha Just recently beat this dang game! Took me like a half hour to figure out how to throw Scar...eventually I had to look it up! There is no way I beat this as a kid!
Sega sound effects when it comes to voice overs is surprisingly very clear. I was watching game play and I was stunned that the voice overs was not distorted like most Sega games
+Jay Flows Hey thanks. Dan does. He writes the script, films, directs and edits. Oh and he makes the music lol! He was very excited for this opening sequence, I'm kinda excited to do a commentary in the future for this episode lol.
I'd hope you guys make cub Simba's roar compassion. Because I thought his roar sounded like a cat in the SNES one whiles Sega sounds like a proper roar.
One cool thing about the SNES version that was cool, graphically, was the lighting affect that comes with the lightning and stuff on some levels. On SEGA the lightning strikes the ground and creates a fire. On SNES it does the same thing, but when it strikes the ground, the rocks nearby light up blue like the lightning - that was cool. I preferred most of the music in SEGA. SNES has closer quality and vocals, and that edges it up on some tracks (like the title theme for sure) - but most of them sound more...deep and just better imo.
I actually remember playing the genesis version of this game. I remember freezing the title screen which was funny for some reason but I never finished the lava portion of the level. Also for some reason, the game over music glitched out and sounded like a fly singing once in a while. Weird. Great episode, btw. Can't wait to see more!
Sega controls much better; the hit boxes on SNES are smaller and make swinging from hippo tails much more difficult. I'm amazed you beat that level on the SNES!
great episode guys! I grew up playing the sega version so I kinda like it more :) I now own it on the snes as well so I'll definitely have to pop it in and give it a try. Awesome job guys!
I still think the Sega wins. The Super Nintendo just doesn't really go for me. Sure the sounds are better but I focus more on the graphics and how smooth the characters look. I honestly think that just because the Super Nintendo has animated letters and cool font, doesn't mean that I appreciate the work put into it. It just means that they added a cool thing to it. Keep in mind this is all my opinion. Thank you.
Sega should've won gameplay due to these: 1. Simba jumps higher 2. The edges in the Nintendo are only useful in 5 levels (one with young Simba in Elephant Graveyard, and all adult Simba levels), meaning it's nothing compared to the edge that helps in the 10 levels in Sega.
There are a bunch of bugs in the SNES adult Simba levels that can make them a pain too (in particular the level where you keep falling into the lava - there are invisible walls). I feel like that plus the cropped screen preventing you from even seeing where to jump on giraffe heads in the second level (which is the hardest level by far in the SNES version) really does give Sega a bigger edge. Bottom line, I think it would have been cool to say it was up to the viewer on this one. ;p "Graphics / screen ratio, or music? You guys decide."
+PimpUigi We encountered bugs in both games. We didn't feel it gave one game the edge over the other. The cropped screen didn't really effect our play through. We didn't notice it making one game easier. Let the people decide? We can't do that. It would be chaos. Imagine the consequences. Human sacrifice. Cats and dogs living together. Mass Hysteria!
Great episode, love the skits! I grew up playing this on SNES and never noticed the cropped image. Now i'm going to have to give the Genesis version a try, but the amazing music will be missed.
Finally, a fair video comparison between two consoles and even with detailed explanations. The other video tried to hid one weakness and the comment full of annoying fanboy who keep said their console are better without any strong arguments. Here, the video already told everything. Good job guys, love it so much!
HOW CAN YOU BE SO FUNNY!!! Question mark. I've seen about ten of your videos. Just found out about you the day before yesterday. Will drag it out, the watching of the episodes I mean, since I don't wan't it to end. But seriously, you're the funniest guys I've seen on the tube in quite some frickin' while. I'm gonna tell all my friends about you. From a Sega fanboy.
Awesome job on the video. I own both those versions of The Lion King. I think I will play both versions tonight or sometime this weekend if I have time. Also, I hope you guys had a Happy Thanksgiving.
Good video, thanks for this. Also something has been driving me crazy. What music clip is it that you play for the categories in this video (3:55 | 5:34 etc)?
SEGA WINS. The cropped screen in Snes affects the gameplay. Snes wins for the musics? The music on the Canion stage sounds like a symphony of farts in snes; and the sound of the roar in the sega is very better!
There are a lot of farts in the Genesis version's sound effects: - In the first level: when Simba jumps on hedgehogs, lizards and beetles; - In the level "The Elephant Graveyard": when the passage opens, after facing two hyenas at the beginning and end of the level, when elephant bones fall and when Simba rolls and opens a passage; - In the level "Simba's Exile": when the rocks fall. - In the "Hakuna Matata" level: when Simba jumps on frogs and spiders; - On the last level when the lightning strikes.
Thank you so much for this episode guys! (I must have missed the episode when it came out) And thank you for having the Super Nintendo win! I agree, with a game based on a Disney movie with one of the most popular and recoginized soundtracks, the music better be good, and the soundtrack quality on Super Nintendo absolutely melts my ears from the moment I turn on the game
Yeeeaaaah I love your channel (still)! Believe it or not, I have the Lion King on both of these consoles and have pretty much never played them. That being said, they look pretty fun. I loved the controller switch at the beginning and the corn at the end! Great video guys... you TOTALLY outclassed those chicks. :-p
Yeah, finally The Lion King test. Great as usual guys, keep the good work. You forgot to compare Simba's roar i think it looks better on genesis. Anyway how Sparkster "Rocket Knight Adventure" sequel for your next test?
If ypu guys get Spiderman - X-men: Arcade's Revenge for SNES & SEGA Genesis, you guys should make an episode about it. Trust me, this future episode is going to be good.
I'm gonna be honest, I thought that the SEGA version had better music. While the SNES version may sound closer to the movie, it just sounds boring while on SEGA, the music sounds more upbeat, epic and catchy. There's something about the sound on SEGA which just makes me like it more even if it's lower quality. But great episode guys.
I'm going through all the old episodes and I love all the Simpsons references you put in. Who's the bigger Simpsons fan? Also my buddy has a tattoo of Dignity, so that's pretty cool.
the grown simba slashing sound on snes is there, it's a whoosh air sound. you can even hear it in the video but on that specific moment the music blends with it.
Great episode, as usual!! Thank you guys so much!!! Now... since you did Final Fantasy 4 vs Phantasy Star 2.... maybe it would be time to do Final Fantasy 6 vs Phantasy Star 4... anyone? I of course feel like Phantasy Star 4 is a better game overal... just because of the music and the story... and the drama... anyone?
You know, I think the SNES colors are closer to a cartoon (which the game is based on) that, and the SNES just has a better color palette to work with, so it's probably closer to what the developers and artists had in mind when they made the game.
+Console Wars Greg and Dan good work I have not been able to think of new content myself as of late also had issues with my PC hopefully I will do another episode of my series or a vlog need something to find first.
The in game music on the Genesis version is definitely better then the Snes. The opening and ending songs are the only one's I would give the Snes the edge on. Genesis also has more parallax scrolling and young Simba's roar isn't a cats meow like on Snes
