Coronation Street is a world famous, British serial drama created by Granada Television and shown on UK ITV since 1960. It is also syndicated worldwide.
The programme centres around "Coronation Street": a cobbled, terraced street in "Weatherfield" a fictional Northern English town.
The production is filmed in a purpose built studios and external set complex near Manchester's Media City, constructed in 2013.
At weekends there is the opportunity for limited numbers of the public to take a paid tour of the external filming sets.
In May 2022 I was invited to a tour... so this video is a record of what I found and a review of my tour.
Spoiler alert, I thought the tour was fantastic - 10/10

Originally broadcast twice weekly from 1960, Coronation Street began airing six times a week in 2017. The series was conceived by scriptwriter Tony Warren in 1959. it was first broadcast in the UK on 09/12/1960 , and the show has since become a significant part of British culture.
Coronation Street today is made by ITV Granada at Manchester's MediaCityUK and shown in all ITV regions, as well as internationally.
In 2010, it became the world's longest-running television soap opera. Initially influenced by the conventions of kitchen sink realism, Coronation Street is noted for its depiction of a down-to-earth, working-class community, combined with light-hearted humour and strong characters.
The show currently averages around six million viewers per episode. The show premiered its 10,000th episode on 7 February 2020, and celebrated its 60th anniversary later that year, which included a visit by Queen Elizabeth II.
The ITV Media City studios and set was purpose built in 2013 for the production of Coronation Street. During the week it is a busy film studios, but at the weekend it is open for pre-booked tours of the exterior sets. Offering limited numbers of the public the opportunity to visit iconic set buildings, such as "The Rover's Return", the most famous fictional Pub in the world. Owned by the fictional brewery 'Newton & Ridley'. Ken Barlow's House at No 1 Coronation Street. Original Character Ken Barlow is still played by veteran actor William Roache (90) who was in the first episode in 1960, and is now in the record books as the worlds longest serving actor in a single role.
Highlights of the tour include: The Rovers Return Pub, The Kabin, Roy's Rolls, The Weatherfield Police Station and Court House. Dressed sets such as Websters Garage and Petals. Even the newest addition to the Coronation Street universe, the probably soon to be busy Shuttleworth's Funeral Services.

Fabulous video Andy. My late wife, her parents and our daughter visited the previous set in 1995. It was a thoroughly enjoyable tour and included a mock up of the House of Commons in full debate. That day the show's character Gail appeared and posed for photos and signed autographs. I started watching the soap in 1984 when I started courting Lynn. Her family were avid fans. My Grandad watched it from day one and when Granada went on strike in 1981 taking Corry off the screens for weeks, he closed his curtains in mourning! Our family weren't allowed to watch ITV so programmes such as Corry, Magpie, TISWAS etc, weren't allowed in our house. 😂 Lynn and I ceased watching Corry around 15 years ago as we thought it had become just another political ideological tool for the left. Corry was always funny as well as serious but to see 'real life' played out in our living rooms was a step too far for us. Thank goodness I no longer have a TV licence that supports the awful corrupt BBC.

I went to Glasgow a few years ago and we were allowed in all the buildings, surprisingly Roy’s rolls and the Rovers Return were all much smaller than they look on tv.

I would like to visit the tour but I remember as a boy coming down with my parents from here in Scotland to Manchester for a holiday. We visited Granada Studios and the tour there & it was fantastic. It breaks my heart to see photos of the old Quay Street studio now.

I visited the previous studio, by chance and unknowingly until arrival, on the very last day it was open to the public. Like yourself I remember the program from childhood days in the 70s but have never watched it since, the main reason for my visit was to pick up a few bits from the giftshop, for my cousin who was a massive fan and living for a few years in Hong Kong, and who I was due to visit. I arrived quite late in the afternoon and was only let in as I was on my own and explained a quick trip would be sufficient and I wanted to buy a few souvenirs as I said. I therefore ended up being the very last ever public visitor to the previous set. There was however no fuss or media presence etc, at least not that I saw. If I remember theese previous studios were planned to close to the public for refurbishment etc, and reopen in due course, but never did for some reason, perhaps the reason for no media interest (even local) of the last day. (Edit) Just remembered as I would have limited time for my visit I was allowed in for half price! Very generous since the late arrival was my fault 😊

Interesting tour around the set I don't watch it myself. But I know a lot of people do in the uk and Spain. Originally it was going to be called Florizel Street when Tony first wrote the dozen or so episodes and then changed at the last minute . He didn't think it would catch on and be very shortlived how wrong was he its unbelievable that its still as popular today as it was in the beginning great little story Andy.
