The Remotest Off Grid House in England | Tibbett's Lookout - Lundy Island

Join me as I spend a challenging winter week living in England's most remote off-grid cabin/house.
This converted pre-World War One built British Admiralty Lookout and Signalling Station is located on Tibbetts Hill on the uninhabited North End of Lundy Island.
Lundy is semi-wild island and a Nature Reserve, located 20 minutes by helicopter or 3 hours by ship from the English mainland west coast.
The island is situated strategically between the Bristol Channel shipping lane and the Atlantic Ocean, making it of interest to the British Royal Navy during the 17th - early 20th Centuries, including during World War 1.
Tibbett's Admiralty Lookout on Lundy is a UK Grade Two Listed Building, and has been fully restored to its 1906 former self by The Landmark Trust, it is now a self contained tiny house, completely off grid and over 30km from the nearest mainland facilities.
In my House Tour I show that Tibbetts has no electricity, it is lit by victorian era gas lamps, and has a coal fire for heating. Despite this it is remarkably homely and comfortable and perfect for Off Grid Living
Today Lundy has just 25 permanent residents, all of whom live in the village on the south end of the island.
In this video I show how to live in comfort in this isolated off grid house, and during the week I explore some of the island's remote 19th century structures, and abandoned places such as the unmanned North Lighthouse built in 1898. I then have to shelter in place when the island is hit by a ferocious Atlantic storm for 24 hours, which delays my helicopter off the island.

Bulls are not enraged by the colour red, despite the old saying: 'Like a red rag to a bull' - they are in fact colour-blind. What may get them excited is rapid movement. So you can wear any colour jacket you like, provided you don't bob and weave about.

That's what you need for 3 or four months s year no TV. internet and most of all no phone. Unless its salty I cant understand why you cant drink the water. When I'm up the mountains on a hike there's nothing nicer than water from a fast flowing stream or river, beats what comes out of your tap in towns and cities. A winters night wind howling rain lashing of the windows and the fire on and your snuggled up in your bed, i think i just described heaven. Been stuck there Christmas day would make my Christmas.

👍 As the Lundy website notes. "Most of the buildings are constructed from the island’s beautiful light-coloured granite. All properties have hot and cold running water, electricity (except Tibbetts), fully-equipped kitchens, some have open fires or stoves and all have the essentials for immediate occupancy including bed linen and towels." 👏

It's brought it all back to me Andy 😀. I normally fly in with my Foxbat aeroplane and had a cottage booked for a couple of days in May. On this occasion, we couldn't fly ourselves because the weather forecast was awful and would have made for a dangerous flight. A phone call to the Lundy office was really helpful and they offered us a helicopter transit at a reduced rate because the ferry was out of commission. It was a four hour drive to Hartland from The New Forest but our stay was quite memorable. Our cottage overlooked the harbour. One of our goals was to photograph the Puffins and we succeeded. We walked around the island both ways and look forward to our next return, by aeroplane. Lundy is a healing place, thanks for your great film. If you're interested I have a few films on my channel chasing the sheep off the runway before landing.

Hmmm. OK well I was born in 1953 in a smallish cottage, in a medium sized village in the midlands (UK). We had gas lighting until I was about 3 or 4...ie about 66 years ago..not 150 years ago! We also had an OUTSIDE toilet until 1983! Hot running water came in '83 too. So...with a couple of solar panels I'd love to live here on Lundy...I'm a radio ham so surounded by only water and a few sheep it'd suit me fine. Great video.

That brings back memories! We stayed there when I was a kid. Dang, that's about 45 years ago. We had to pump the water pressure to flush the toilet (and I believe we had to dig a hole to empty the tank). We went by ferry and had to transfer to a smaller boat with the day-trippers as it couldn't go in any further. Thanks for making me feel old 😁

He neglected to mention there are over 20 separate places to stay on Lundy, and they’re not all in the village, including a medieval castle, and the old telegraph hut. We stayed in the Blue Bung in 2021, a blue corrugated hut on the cliff side.

Andy; just watched your vid on the cottage on Lundy. Very interesting! Well produced! Your an interesting person. One thing about gas lamps! Had them in my off grid cottage here in Ontario. Algonquin Park. Went through many a lamp burning device. Years ago they were cheap. Not so much today! Came in a small box. You extracted it and fitted the ceramic end into the gas lamp. You lit the gauze mantle with a match. After it had become a solid fixture, you turned the gas on and lit it. We destroyed many mantles by lighting them the way you did! Took us years but, you put the lighter ABOVE the fixture! You light it from the top!!! Best Mike C.
