It's hilarious how parents think that music about gay relationships are gonna turn their kids gay. Like a man singing about how much he loves men is gonna turn your kids gay. I mean, songs about straight relationships were common but I'm still pansexual.

I’m pretty sure the title “Everyone is Awesome” comes from “Everything is Awesome” from the song from the lego movie.

From what I've heard, the "marking the lego set as 18+" part is meant to be because the set isn't meant to be played with, and is only meant to be put on display.

Before watching this I didn't even know that Blue was a lesbian and that her girlfriend was magenta. I'm honestly so happy that I show that a grew up with one of the main character is a lesbian.

As a bisexual, I can state that I don't care what corporations think. I know who I am, and that is enough.

The set isn’t only on sale for June. It has the life span of a normal set, and lego has shown its support for the LGBTQIA+ Community lots of times before outside of June and in years gone by. The 18+ age is because of the box, they chose that style to make it stand out, however, the box style they chose is only one for 18+ sets, due to this they decided to brand it as 18+ instead of giving it a more colourful background that wouldn’t make it stand out. Lego has had a pride crosswalk, lesbian couple and gay couple make appearances in their tv show lego ninjago, in season 12 and 15.

I think children should be tought how normal and ok being LGBTQIA+ is and that everyone is valid

About Lego set being 18+; one of the explanation given was "it's display set, not a toy" BUT Even though display sets are indeed 18+, it's more complicated/higher piece counts one. Like ironman "painting", made from 3167 stud pieces Sets with lower piece count dent to be 16+. like Statue of liberty, with 1685 pieces. "Everyone Is Awesome" should definitely fall under this category with its 346 pieces

I'm in agreement with the message you're spreading, I see the good intent, but the way you've opened the video uses a lot of big words that frame Lego as some stone-cold, homophobic corporation, but as a Lego fan that has a deep understanding of their core values and marketing philosophies, I feel like I need to defend them. I was surprised to hear that they weren't donating any proceeds to charities and I agree that they really should have done that, so there's a real fault there, but the next point of criticizing them for the name of the set? Personally, I love the name as it both is a clear reference to the wildly successful song from the Lego Movie, and it is a comment on the fact that EVERYBODY is awesome. Forget race, gender or sexuality, and ect. these things don't make any people any worse. It's a nice little pun with pride vibes that very much suits Lego's humor. As for the next point, the set being 18+, I understand why you would make all the assumptions that you did but I think your criticisms are in the wrong place. Recently Lego has been marketing to a new audience, adults, with sets like Lego flowers and cars and generally things that they think adults would like because they have realized that kids aren't the only ones playing with Lego sets. All these sets have the signature black background shared by this set, meaning it is undoubtedly part of this new line. And this is understandable given the nature of the set, it's a display piece rather than a toy, there's not too much fun to be had by children except maybe posing the featureless figures. So no this isn't meant for children, but that doesn't entirely invalidate your point seeing as they are still advertising toward adults and it would have been nice to get a cheaper, smaller playset for kids to enjoy too. Not trying to stir any kinda conflict here, I love your videos and appreciate your work of course but I also love Lego and I know they have a good heart. Side note, I recently read an article on how they went to court with a guns company in America that was creating colorful brick themed firearms and Lego couldn't stand for that because they're nice, I swear :)

Funny thing that happened to me today: as I was listening with my grandma to the radio they actually played Regenbogenfarben (Rainbow colours) by Kerstin Ott, the songs all about normalizing gay couples and divers couple dynamics and looking outside of what you are used to, basically to „colour your world in rainbow colours“. And they played this song , knowing that it is indeed sung by a married lesbian woman, on a radio that is usually catering to older ppl. This really made my day. And the song is really amazing and makes u wanna dance.

I do find your commentary on the Lego set misinformed. It's a display set, it isn't a playset. Display sets are 18+ The title references the song from the Lego movie, it's not to avoid using the term pride, it's just that "Lego: pride flag" is a pretty bland title.

This is a great video! But, I'm pretty sure that Ariana has said in a few of her songs that she likes both men and women, although she has said she doesn't label her sexuality, but she isn't straight.

Your argument concerning the Everything is Awesome LEGO set being 18+ is unfounded considering the fact that Winnie the Pooh was labeled as 18+.

I do think that the Lego situation is slightly more complex, as the best fitting theme currently out for a display model like that is the 18+ theme. They could create a unique theme for it, and they might have been able to put it under the Lego Creator theme, but I do agree that it wasn't the greatest move.

Queerbaiting is why I'm trying really hard to find a way to pitch a supernatural romance tv show with mostly lgbt+ characters. I'm so tired of the community being over sexualized. I'm a happily married asexual panromantic gender fluid person. And almost all media i see depicting gay relationships are either over sexualized or made out to be the bad guys. My show would represent many aspects of the community. But I'm having a really hard time finding how to set up a pitch.

In the same boat as Nickelodeon, Netflix. I know that She-Ra came out a few years ago, but tis still amazing. In the She-Ra universe LGBTQ+ is normal, and the creator has actually confirmed no one in the show is cishet. I believe there was also some show with LGTBQ character that was going to be aired in some homophobic country. Country refused to air it if Netflix didn’t remove the characters, so Netflix just straight (haha straight) up cancelled the deal

Blue is female? I never really paid attention to stuff like that when I was a kid, not even gender i guess. I love the direction they're taking that show now ^w^

Where did my comment go? I wanted to add something to it but its not here. It was: Angry Birds 2 had added rainbow colored feathers and pride themed acsessories, many people in the comments complained about it and told people were uninstalling the game just for it.

The set is only 18+ because it is a display set marketed towards adults, and uses more advanced brick techniques. Not because its a pride set. Surprised lego isnt donating anything though

There's no age LIMIT to Lego, just a recommendation. If that set was found in stores normally, any kid could buy it, no problem. Like MANY have said, the 18+ rating only comes from the series the set was released for. It's completely arbitrary and makes ZERO statement on saying something pride related isn't for kids. And kids get those sets anyways. Nothing stops parents from buying them for them.

I got that Lego set three days ago. Today is the 18th of July, so it's not a June only set. And in all fairness, it's a banger of a set. I love the black background they went for, with the white Lego studs on the bottom, it really makes it pop. I also went through way too much struggle to get my hands on it, because of toy stores near me closing, not having PayPal and the closest lego store being a fair bit out, but I got too peeved not to get it. They even went as far as to include the black and brown figures, and the transflag, which I find very cool.

Curious, when did Nickelodeon confirm Blue to be a lesbian? According to the wiki (which could totally be an r/sapphoandherfriend situation) it says that people have speculated Blue being a lesbian and Magenta being her girlfriend, but that Nick Jr. said it wasn't true and that they're, "just friends." I would LOVE for my first ever favorite cartoon star to be queer, I just want to know I have the right info.

The lego set is 18+ because it's a display set, not a play set, it's the same with sets like the bonsai tree, it's something you put on a shelf or a desk just to look at it, not a toy to play with, and lego has shown support to the lgbtq for a long time

the 18+ on the lego set likely has little to do with this, thence been using it, and the black backgrounds recently for sets designed specifically for display, and they started about 2 years ago

There is an anime movie that you might be interested in checking out... it does something I never thought I would ever see... Hetro-Baiting, this is first is the first thing I have ever used this term for... Bokura no Nanokakan Sensou (Seven Days War) Aya and Kaori confess to one another around the beginning of the third act. You can tell there is something between the two of them at the beginning of the movie, if you know what to look for. I was surprised and happy to see the queer baiting trope turned on it's head. The first 2 acts of the movie look like your typical hetro relationship story and then as soon as the boy confesses to Aya, She turns him down in front of everyone then immediately to Kaori and confesses to her. But what makes this movie Hetro-Baiting is that all of the marketing material for the movie shows this as a heteronormative coming-of-age story, from the movie posters to the trailers. Something in line with the movies 'Your Name' or 'Weathering With You'. I definitely recommend this movie you should check it out.

2:06 notice how those sets are all made for playing with however? Display piece lego sets, like the pride set, are usually ranked between 16-18 (so not sure why it wasn't 16 but regardless) and Everyone Is Awesome is referencing the Everything Is Awesome song from Lego Movie

I love the crayon example, because the pink crayon represents woman and the blue crayon represents men, but when you see the whole box of crayons, it represents all out of the 100+ genders out there

guys my brother is a lego collector and the 18+ is on lots of lego boxes, including sesame street set. it’s mainly because it just means it’s for display honestly, and doesn’t mean much at all. (i’m queer btw)

Im pretty sure the 18+ is a consistency thing, since all their other sets of the same them are usually also 18+.Plus comparing it to Lego city is unfair due to that being a different theme with different age recommendations. The Winnie the Pooh set is 18+. LEGO have shown support to LGBTQ++ a lot before. Also the minifigures are pretty cool.

Blue's Clues was one of my favorite shows as a kid! Of course that was in the late 90s/early 2000s when being LGBTQ wasn't as accepted. So I never knew that Blue is a lesbian and in a relationship with Magenta. But I'm so happy to see them spreading positive, inclusive messages and I'm glad I supported the show! If I ever had a kid I'd definitely let them watch Blue's Clues and show them the pride videos. Honestly I wish stuff like that had existed when I was a kid, it could have helped me accept my own sexuality. I'm glad times are changing, and that Nick stood their ground against the homophobic backlash.

One example I can think of queerbaiting is in Fred the movie. The voice actor for Fred is gay but yet in the movie,he fantasizes over this girl named Judy and later on,ends up kissing his friend Bertha in the closet towards the end of the movie.

Tj maxx, ross, marshalls, and target are also very good companies for lgbtq+ people, as they allow people to use the bathrooms/dressing rooms they identify with rather than based on biological sex

The lego set does put out sets with various diverse characters and individuals, the set is listed at 18+ because all sets that are not intended to be played with are listed as 18+. Its a display set. Also, the creator explained how he made the set for a friend who had come out to show his support. The Lego Group does try to make diversity a priority in its sets, and they do it better than most other toy companies. I think its rather unfair to saying that about Lego. Especially of you hear the creator of the set describe it. Its called Everyone is awesome to A. connect the set to the immensely popular "Everything is Awesome" song, and B. make a statement of diversity.

These homophobic boys who were in my class last year were always queerbating while also calling my friend the t*slur and making fun of me for liking girls. Somehow the strangest part is though that even the other lgbtq kids in my class had been going along with their queerbating and homophobia even calling the two boys their otp which literally made me want to throw up. Also a side note for queerbating my friend queerbates all the time telling boys they're hot and then denying or laughing off anyone who actually calls him gay. The funniest thing about him though is that every girl he's ever liked has been a lesbian or bisexual who comes out as lesbian after dating him. He really needs to remember that half of his girl friends are actual gay people

While I love Blue’s Clues because it’s one of the shows I grew up with, the credit for the good representation goes to its reboot series, Blue’s Clues & You! Blue’s Clues ran from 1996-2006 and the reboot started in 2019. Just wanted to let people know!

The reason Lego makes it 18+ isnt to make it exclusively for those over the age of 18. It just means it has little play features compared to other sets. 🙂

The product has 0 play value, the main appeal of the set is for DISplay, not play, lego bases its age ratings on play value, there is very little play value in 11 monocrome minifigs with assorted hairstyles, people under 18 can build 18+ lego sets, people under 16 can build 16+ sets, people under 12 can build 12+ lego sets etc. Lego sets have age suggestions, not limitations

I wanna point out how Nintendo & Gamefreak have a habit of writing out LGBTQIA+ characters, or making them implied. Vivian, for example is a trans women in every translation EXCEPT english. While with Gamefreak, the most is implied. The famous "Yes, a mere half year ago I was a Black Belt! Quite the transformation wouldnt you say?" girl and the entire character of Ilima. Dude gets referred as both male and female pronouns, the fact hes queer-coded, etc. Like, i love Nintendo games but its very very common if there are any lgbtqia characters. Its getting *somewhat* better, with Mario Odyssey letting Mario wear a bride gown. Theres prolly more, but that was the stuff off the top of my head.

I think the lego part of this video is a little misguided..? if you go on their site, you'll see that they clearly market this set as LGBTQ+ and as they say "it partners with Workplace Pride..." and "...supports UK-based charity, Diversity Role Models..." to show that this isn't just a one time thing. and as for the age rating, it's to go with all of their sets that are meant to be display pieces as opposed to play sets. just look at most of their architect collection/botanical collection and heck I just went into their shop and saw some lego Adidas shoes that were marked ages 18+ and I doubt THAT was done to appease anyone :P not all lego is for kids :o

well with lego they don't focus on families or relationships in the children sets, also it is 18 plus because it is not a play set, its a more mature set because there is nothing to play with almost all 18plus sets are just for display not play, 18 plus sets use to be called expert sets, but anyone can buy 18plus sets even children, also in the lego stores they have the set on display next to the children sets, meaning that everyone who goes to the children section has to go past the table with it on display, also in the store window they had it a tv screen with the video explaining the set (it was the video that lego released on youtube about the set) with the audio playing quite loudly

I’m a grey Ace and I got the Lego pride set over the weekend and I didn’t even notice the age recommendation since they tend to denote either the complexity of the set (Duplo being easy for toddlers but creator expert being more for adults) or to show if it’s meant as a play set or a display piece. I only recently figured out I was probably grey since I already knew I was ace but couldn’t figure out the romance side since I wasn’t aro at all and grey seems like the best fit for how I feel since I switch between hetero, pan and Demi day by day. I do kind of wish there was more representation for me but the closest I have is the Doctor and they are awesome so I’ve got one of the best people to look up to. I do want to write a children’s series one day and I want the characters to be part of the community and not be confined by gender roles if they’re cis. I just want to normalize all of this to show kids that it’s okay to be yourself and you don’t have to conform to 1950’s values.

I think companies like MasterCard releasing a new line of cards where you don't have to put your legal name on them is a step in the right direction. Would it be better for the trans community if it could be *any* card the company has? Yes, absolutely. The fact that they're even doing this though when it probably has some legal issues that needed to be worked out is still quite a bit though.

The only reason that Lego pride set was released as a Lego +18 set because of the box also it wasn't made for sale. It was made by a member of a Lgbtqia who works there for a desk decorations. The even made the Winnie the Pooh and Sisamie street sets +18 Also the name of the set is a reference to a song in the Lego movie

I'm a woman who knew she liked girls/women at 5. It was a non negotiable. It didn't matter how much I was pushed to be straight. It just wasn't going to happen. XD And thank you for locking down on just WHAT queer baiting is. Some people think queer baiting is any product that is LGBTQA+ friendly, and people who usually say this are just sore that LGBTQ is getting more public exposure, and should stay in the closet, and quite cruelly try and convince LGBT+ people that their modern exposure is "just for a quick buck." No, queer baiting IS companies who vaguely release The Rainbow while still being scared of losing their homophobic customers, and try and find ways to work around that.

I hear a lot of people (on the internet, from their echo chambers) complaining about heterophobia and super-straight phobia. Might take them more seriously when radio stations refuse to play their songs, or (I'm a 90s kid, bit of a throw-back to racism too) MTV refuses to play music videos by them except for late at night. For anyone who hasn't seen it, I recommend the David Bowie interview where he called out how 'black music' was only played at like 2-3 in the morning on their channel, when it was a plethora of white people for the times people where likely to watch.
