Hi! We're Nick and Jen, a retired military veteran of 14 years and professional dancer/entertainer at Coyote Ugly Bar. Together, we decided to sell everything and break free of the glitz, glam and chaos of city life to move off gird. We live on our 20 acres of remote land in the mountains of Southern Utah.
We’re trying to be as self sufficient as possible by installing all our own utilities and doing everything DIY with as much modern technology as can make happen. Living off grid is about the freedom to build our own path one plank at a time. Life, indeed, is Elevated Off Grid. Come along and see what life is like as we continue to build our property and adventure around Southern Utah's mountains.

You guys must feel such relief and satisfaction that all the important stuff is done now. Everything else is just gravy. You have water, septic, solar, storage and now good shelter. Are you proud of yourselves, I would be? Also I've noticed that your subscriptions moved! I have no idea why you don't have huge subscription numbers yet, but the important thing is it moved!!!

I keep up with ~70ish channels each week, some are once, some twice, even some are 3 times a week, and some, just sperratic(sp) and one thing that baffles me is that you only have 30K subscribers! As good of a job as you do, I think it should be soooo much more. I appreciate all you share and really want you to succeed.

My hats off to you both. Love watching. Well I know I'm more of a work for retirement life. I retired from Air Force after 20 years and 13 additional years with VA Medical. I'm so blessed to have retire with no worries of insurance or if I'm going to survive. It does get me how many u-tubers are doing this. Really not putting you both down but, I'm love structure. Keep making videos and enjoying life.

Good information, people think they can blindly go into homesteading but depending on what’s important to you it’s gonna cost a pretty penny.

Thank you for a very informative video, it's wonderful that you feel comfortable to share. Can I just say I can't believe how cheap your land is (I've mentioned previously that it's beautiful) we would pay around $500,000 AUD for that size around my area 😮 And if I haven't mentioned, your doing a great job. Until next week.

Love this video and the breakdown of your apartment costs!! This give the people wanting to do this a very rounded number to start with!! I love that you built the garage first to store tools and a vehicle while you are building your apartment and cant wait for you to restart on your permanent home!!!!!! Your guys are rock stars Jen is so beautiful (and she knows it the way she always flirts with you and i love it) Nick is an awesome builder that take his time trying to do it right and i love his insights and builds within the apartment too!! You both make a great couple, complement each other, and even Jen helps build and puts in her time too along with the home schooling, cooking, cleaning!!!I can believe you don't have 100k subs yet!! BUT YOU WILL!!!!!!!!!! BEAUTIFUL BUILD you guys ahve done inside and out!!!

Garden tips What ever You use for top soil in Your garden boxes and depending on what You grow, get Your soil tested Next save that chicken poop and get a large container and fill it about a 1/3 full and the rest water and let it sit for a few days then strain the water off and save it. You can save it and make it weaker with more water to the strained part. then You can sprinkle that on what ever Your growing and You will be surprized on how that will help also some plants do not like other plants by them and just a few tips many more I am sure You will find out as time goes by, thanks for the cost break down sorry about the typos I near 80 years old and hard to type

You all have done a great job for 2 years!!! Lots of hard work and planning and preparing. While you have a lot more planned, you are now in a reasonable space for your family with grand views!!! Once you have your house built (a few years) you could rent the apartment out on short term vacas and make money to fund your life!!!

Hey guys, I put a big smile on my face when I seen your video pop up on my iPad. Thank you.😊 and also what people don’t forget to remember that you guys did most of your work yourself and you’re still doing it to make it comfortable to your liking. Lotta lotta hard work lotta work and you drive along way before you can get to a store to a doctor to a pharmacy, so people have to remember all them things too. Just saying. you guys are awesome. You were given the world a lot of knowledge because there’s more people that want to go this way living but there’s always that but it’s a lot a lot of work I watch your channel. I also watch Trent and Ali’s channel you guys do all your work yourself if you had to hire that out some things you can hire out but if you had to higher out everything that you guys do, it would be a fortuneabsolutely a fortune

Long time subscriber and follower. I enjoyed this breakdown and explanation very much and am certain it will be incredibly useful to some who are on the fence about taking the plunge. I love your spirit and drive and have always been very envious of what you are doing and have accomplished. Nick, you and I are really kindred spirits in many ways and as much as I would love to do it, I'm just too darned old now to attempt it. I can relate to your comments about lumber and material prices increasing during the Covid fiasco. I was right in the middle of planning and starting on a large, 36'X46' shop at my son's house for our automotive interests and side hustle. Between delays, material shortages and price increases everything more than doubled in many cases. But like you and Jen, I pressed through and am glad for it. Your discussion and breakdown answered a few questions I had and things I wondered about. At the end of the day you spend a little more than you initially plan, but save a lot of money by doing the work yourself. That has always been my way too - and the memories you, Jen, Buba and Rickie have built together, are priceless. All with Charlie's assistance of course 😉 Have a great week. ❤ Larry, Central Valley, Ca.

Nick, just a suggestion for you. If things go south, you might want to look into buying an older pickup truck. My suggestion is something like a 1972-74 3/4 ton 4x4 PU. Something that does not have a computerized electrical system. Points, Condenser, Old cap with an old fashion rotor and then buy some extra parts, water pump, starter, power steering pump, generator/alternator, filters, U-joints, tires, etc. Once you have everything, park the truck and don't use it to much, that way when you NEED to use it, it will be ready for you.

I liked this video a lot and I'm not planning an off grid life. It's interesting to see how much you save doing it yourself. Good Simple Living did a cost breakdown of their tiny house (the temporary home they built inside their shop, prior to building their home). I found it so interesting and then they stopped, which I was disappointed about.

I have found going to auctions and estate sales you can buy a lot of things that are good and can save a lot of money over buying new, Wood. electrical, plumbing, pipe, steal flat angle I beam channel, roofing tin , A lot of the time 1/2 price or less, Just a thought for the future. Stay Safe watch for snakes now it's warming up.

Not to knock the way you guys did anything. I have dreams of doing similar. I think what I would do different is make the shop a bit bigger. Perhaps even big enough to park the camper inside, or maybe just a partially enclosed lean-to for it. Orientate the building so that it's optimal for the solar array to go on the roof. Put all of the solar and water equipment inside. Small-ish bath+laundry room too. I would guess the shop cost would be about double, but it'd be worth it to me.

For $200K in a Big City today, you would get something habitable, but it wouldn't be much. I think you increased the value of your Dollars by a ratio of 10 to 1, or more. You took $1 of your money and made from it (buying the 20 acres, dIYing your builds etc..) $10, and maybe more.

The one question that I always ask myself when I see everybody talking about how much it cost to build off grid is first of all how did you acquire the money to do that? You gave a prime example of about $185,000 roughly I mean did you have $185,000 in the bank sitting there waiting on doing this?
