To add a deeper element to this song the son that he lost was a young man he and his wife adopted as a young boy. The kid came home from college and had broken his necklace with the patron Saint of Protection and told his Mom he wanted a new chain bc he felt more at peace wearing his necklace. The next day he went out boating with friends and the accident happened. His Mom holds the question on the protection of the necklace and if it'd happened if he had been wearing it.

This song hits me so hard because I know way too many parents that have lost their children. I think only the strongest in faith can survive. Or some go numb. There's nothing worse than a mommy screaming over her child's coffin. Or a mother still waiting every minute for Jesus to raise her son the way he raised Lazarus until they send the family away to close the coffin. ( then lost her eldest daughter five months later. I've known two to die from Broken Heart Syndrome, another had a stroke at her daughter's funeral. God bless and comfort every parent who lost a children. Only faith. 😥🙏🙏🙏

Please don’t ever say that again. Life has no guarantees. Everyone of us have a ticking clock. God himself had to suffer this pain. It’s a pain even He had to turn away from. He knows what He’s asked us to carry. You saying that undermines what we experienced and how we live through it. There are many other griefs people deal with, this one just happens to be the worst. Giving your condolences is plenty to say at such a loss.

Glad to see you, and others for that matter, react to this. This truthfully is one of the most meaningful and impactful songs that anyone has released in a long time. Very, very personal to him. I love the story of the whole thing. Horrible, tragic loss for him and his family but relying on his faith in God to carry him through. He's said it's very hard for him to sing and he almost didn't want to even release it but a country legend, Ricky Skaggs, told him he had to. Good friends with Blake Shelton who played a big part on social media in making this song known to everyone when Craig sent it to him. Just an awesome story and piece of work out of a horrible situation- showing that God indeed won't let you down even when it seems you're at your lowest point.

As others mentioned Craig’s son died in a boating (tubing) accident. Craig said the song came to him in the middle of the night. He got out of bed and wrote it in four hours. He sang it at the Grand Ole Opry and while leaving the stage Ricky Skaggs convinced him he needed to record it and perform it so everyone could hear it. He originally said that would be the last time he sang it because it was so difficult for him. Blake Shelton pushed it big time on iTunes and it went to number 1 in every category. If you want to see and hear the true emotions of the song please watch his performance on the Grand Ole Opry. I can’t watch it and not cry......

Granger Smith's Heavenbound Balloons. I believe in irony. Granger has that song on his album that came out in late 2018. He filmed the video and released it as a single in the spring of 2019. A few weeks after his release of the video his 3yr old son River drown in a freak accident in the fenced pool at home while playing with waterguns with his brother and Granger did gymnastics in the yard with the daughter London. In the song they did red balloons. River's favorite color was red. The whole tragedy is just so ironic. The song is so heartwarming even w/o the story afterwards.

I know, I cry every time I listen to it. Very powerful song, you can feel his pain.

The thought of losing a child is more than any parent can bare. Just watching him sing this hurts, God Bless you brother!

He sang this song for the first time at the Grand Ole Opry. After he was done and walking off stage Ricky Skaggs told him how much he liked the song. Morgans response was "Thank you but that's the last time I'm singing it!" Ricky Skaggs grabbed Morgan by the shoulders and said "You have to keep singing that song for other people that are hurting". Blake Sheldon was also encouraging him to keep sing the song. Sometimes he can't get through the whole song

This song got me the first time i heard it too. Craig Morgan has a powerful voice and almost always delivers a powerful message. I'm sorry, someone wasn't there to give you hug but then again, i could have used one too lol.

I don't know if anyone else has already mentioned this song, but "Tough" from Craig Morgan is another great song.
