The debate between Bill Nye (aka 'The Science Guy) and Creation Museum president Ken Ham has people (from fundamentalist Christians to Atheists and everything in between) buzzing today. What should we make of the signs creationists made for those who believe in evolution? www.buzzfeed.com/mjs538/messag... Does conservative Christian 700 Club host Pat Robertson believe believers should reject fossil records? Ana Kasparian and John Iadarola (host, TYT University and Common Room) break it down on The Young Turks.

I have $10 in my pocket though Evo: prove it Crea: no, you need to prove that i don't have it. Evo: well for one, you don't have pockets. Crea: that's just your opinion... ...

Please don't group all theists with these idiots you see in the video. To me, Science and Religion are linked, my religion actively encourages me to learn, discover, and research. I believe in almost all of science while at the same time believing in my religion because they do not disprove each other, the only parts I disagree with (keep in mind, disagreeing does not mean I'm stating they cannot be true, they could very well be true) are macro-evolution and there being no creator, although I do not consider the latter to be part of science. Just because I believe in a creator does not mean I do not believe in science, and any creationist who does not believe in science is being lied to or lying to himself. Believing in science does not equal not believing in a creator. I have the mental capacity to know that I could be wrong, there could very well be no creator, however I am more convinced in there being a creator and that's just what I believe.
@koojaa
@koojaa 9 лет назад
In addition if there is ever any concrete proven evidence disproving a fundamental component of my religion, I will stop believing in my religion, simple as that. I'm not stating this as a challenge, but trying to make the point that I am open-minded, and I am not simply a blind follower of my religion.

I cringed at that "If we came from monkeys, why are there still monkeys?" I grew up in a very religious Christian household and I have memories of asking the teacher that exact question when we learned about evolution in like 5th grade. Back then I would always repeat what I was told from my grandparents about science and religion and I'm embarrassed about it today. It really screwed me up. I am now agnostic.
@rayconlogue9221
@rayconlogue9221 7 лет назад
I sympathize with the trauma you must have experienced in Grade 5. Unfortunately there's no way to reconcile the Bible with scientific research. But for me the Biblical story is just what we should expect from a nomadic people who had no telescopes and believed the 200 or so stars they could see in the sky were all the stars that existed, and that the creation of the world coincided with the earliest dates in their family tree. That makes perfect sense. . .for them, not us. It is shameful that Christian preachers still demand that their twaddle be believed literally, on pain of hell fire. The damage done is tremendous, and so many different ways.
@soconfused8031
@soconfused8031 7 лет назад
You're lucky you grew out of that. Most people will continue to believe what they were taught as kids. It's a shame that children are so vulnerable and without full mental faculties that they have to entrust their knowledge of the world to a handful of adults that, often, choose to fill their kids head full of crap.

Agnostic is not really a better position to be in, Agnosticism is the belief that the answer is unknowable. Surely you want to know though right. You want to learn, and understand? You should be asking the questions and pursuing answers to have a degree of understanding, and not be agnostic about it, and shrug your shoulders and just say 'i dont know' or worse.. 'i dont WANT to know'. I imagine if you sat and thought about it more, you'd realise your actually Atheist not Agnostic. I hope anyway.
@Ren_out_of_Ten
@Ren_out_of_Ten 7 лет назад
Chris, being agnostic doesn't mean you can't be theist or atheist. Agnosticism is not knowing, (a)theism is (not) believing. I was an agnostic atheist for a long time before returning to my Christian faith (not a creationist btw)... hope that helps
@Chris-yp1fe
@Chris-yp1fe 7 лет назад
Correct. But if you 'don't know' you need to ask do i believe and the only answer to that based on what was said is atheism. Agnostism is not a valid position by itself. You either believe or you don't

I don't think you paid attention to what Nye was really trying to do. At about two or three times in the debate he addressed to the children and also to the younger people in the audience, HE KNEW that the adults are a lost cause but he mentioned how there are certain science degrees that they couldn't get in Kentucky, he talked about being a real critical thinker, he said how WE NEED scientifically literate voters and tax payers and we needed engineers and scientist. He wasn't there to change people's minds, he was there to show the people that still had hope that there is a world of science and beauty that creation can't satisfy. I think this debate was CRUSTAL for some of the younger creationist kids that are still able to realize "hey there really is true evidence out there"

It's unbelievable that those people are perfectly fine using their mobile phones or any other device that only work according to the rules we found in nature but reject those rules if we apply them to radiometric dating. You can't selectivly rule out results of scientific discoveries just because the results of some of them disprove your worldview while being perfectly fine with the results that make your life easier. The same rules that predict that your mobile phone will work predicts the age of other stuff.

One of the biggest problems I had with Ken Ham, was he used the same cop-out answer to something like three or four questions, and that answer was "Well... there's this book. It's called the Bible and if you read it, you'll find your answer to blah blah..." He was so condescending in the way he said this, and he said it multiple times in place of an actual, well thought out argument. Bill Nye would legitimately answer the question, and Ken Ham would just squawk out this bull shit read the bible nonsense. It really showed how ignorant he was, and how unworthy he is of having a debate with someone like Bill Nye.

The best definition of what a scientific theory is was from Isaac Asimov. He called it a map. Even a crudely drawn map is better than no map. And we can improve the map over time. Adding ever greater details until it shows us exactly what we need to know and in what direction we need to go. I've often said that Asimov's non-fiction writing was far better than his fiction.

There are other historical accounts that are a lot more reliable. The only value of those texts is cultural, and that is questionable. If you would have studied religion you would know that.
@Morjensful
@Morjensful 10 лет назад
If you accept anything on that basis you are accepting something by logical fallacy. Facts are not derived through popularity contests nor is credibility decided through popularity. You are confused as to what evidence is and should read up on the scientific method as to how evidence is gathered and what it actually is. Personal accounts are always regarded as the worst kind of evidence, and geological and archaelogical findings are usually required to confirm these. Even then for example book-keeping, taxation accounts and notaries provide a much more reliable source than religious texts because they require a degree of objectivity to benefit anyone. Religious texts however do give an image and a ground to speculate upon the cultural values of said society. But as mentioned earlier, there is a plethora of more reliable accounts. Sry for my english, third language.
@Morjensful
@Morjensful 10 лет назад
I understand your position pretty well, as I used to think as you do. That is a position of trying to make realities bend to a text instead of the other way around. As all fictional texts there are historical references in the Bible, but to call them historical fact is a bit of a stretch. For example the accounts of most references to the roman or eqyptian empire have been either proven unsubstantiated by archaelogical evidence or other accounts (the ones I previously mentioned). You are right as to the fact that history is written by the victor, but that is completely beside the point. We do have accounts and evidence of the "other" side in most cases. As for many cultures sharing the same stories, intertextualism or cultural references can not be said to be evidence of the factual validity of the bible. That would be akin to call Puff Daddy a teller of truths because he has sampled Diana Ross and Sting. Again, you are confused about what facts are. It also might be a hard point to get across since it does not survive scrutiny? I appreciate your answers.

Evolution is taught as a fact because the fossil record shows evolution clearly happened. Theories come in when we try to explain the why or how of Evolution. FYI even the last pope suggested that the creation story should be rethought. The catholic leadership is starting to come around to evolution being the best explanation of human life. They still hold that god created life but we evolved from other species. They eventually come around to reality. I mean they believed that the earth was the center of the universe. Thunder was the voice of god. You still have some who believe in Thor. I kind of wish he was real. He would take on Ken Ham in the way that Ken Ham needs to be taken on. With a hammer!

Its a good thing for Bill Nye to debate someone like Ken Hamm. It shows the complacent educated part of America that they should not take anything for granted in elections. There are 91 million Americans that identify as evangelical christians. That's over 25% of the US population. We have to work with these people and educate them or at least their children to move away from these silly superstitions and truly embrace science. You say they may get exposed to harsh criticism? I say so what? I've criticized people on You Tube, called them names (I'm not proud of that behavior) and I've been called plenty of names too. I'm still standing and by exposing myself to ideas that differ from my own I actually learn something once in a while. I don't think all atheists are "so hateful, so arrogant". Both debaters needed each other for their causes, and I think the awareness brought to this issue by the two was useful overall. Ham needed a legitimate scientist to puff himself up so he can put more asses through the doors of his creation museum so he can stave off bankruptcy for a few more months, and it's hard to get more legit than Nye. Nye needed a prominent Creationist on display to punch themselves out on logical fallacies and no tangible proof to show how hollow the argument is, and since Kent Hovind is still in Federal Prison on Fraud and Tax Evasion charges, the only other one up there was Ham. Make no mistake, just like Pat Roberts, they don't really believe what they're talking about, at least not nearly to the extent they purport themselves to. What they really are is sleazy car salesmen trying to sell you an invisible car. I'd say, on the whole, the number of people who are going to rethink their world view in favor of science is going to be greater than the number of people who'd be willing to shell out over 30$ in Kentucky to see a depiction of a caveman living beside a vegetarian T-Rex statue.

@JonasTheLundh
@JonasTheLundh 10 лет назад
River Lilly Science wasn't created to go against religion, and neither are they really the two polar opposites that people seem to think. Your question _"Why can't science and reality be proof of a greater existence?"_ has a pretty simple answer. A proof of something is just that because it *is* just that. Proof of a particular thing. The nice smell and bright colours of a flower are a proof that it evolved to be attractive to a specific (or several) kind(s) of insect(s). Not that God is good, God is great. A proof of something isn't a proof because you _want_ it to be, it's proof because it _is_. Scientists have on many occasions been forced to revise their theories because of new proof that contradicts their old ones and can be better explained and ideally tested and confirmed. That's the core principle of how science grows, becomes better and evolves. An idea or a theory can do just that, change, evolve and gradually become a better version of itself. Religion doesn't do that, and that's what I find so fundamentally wrong with it. There is no tangible proof that science can provide *against* a "greater existence" (I assume that by that you meant something akin to God, the teapot orbiting Mars or maybe even Nyan Cat), but on the other hand there is no tangible, testable evidence *for* something like that either. And unti something like that comes along, I'll stick my guns with the multitude of things that science _can_ prove and what I can see, hear, feel, smell and taste for myself.
@sabrinalord6355
@sabrinalord6355 10 лет назад
I know this...you can't test the existence of god, gods or any higher existence. There were so many great minds in science and astronomy that due to their limitations of knowledge gave into the idea of God. The God idea being their limit of their knowledge...And you're right, it can't be tested. neil degrasse tyson gives a good explanation of that. There's always going to being something we don't know now

The reason why I changed a lot of what I believed is because I watched TheAmazingAtheist, Bill Nye, others who pointed out things I never thought about before. I don't think an open discussion of ANYTHING makes people stupider. An open discussion makes people more intelligent and are able to improve their beliefs. This discussion was very important, because the majority of America calls themselves Christians. Debating a fairy tale is better than not debating it. Sure you legitimize it, but you de-legitimize it more than you legitimize it by tearing their arguments and beliefs apart.

Ana is Armenian which up to 97% claim to be Orthodox Christian. It is highly likely that she grew up in a Christian household. I also think I remember her mentioning this on a video or two, but don't quote me. Her point wasn't necessarily that the debate was completely useless. More that Ken Ham and his ilk are so ignorantly stubborn that there is no point debating him/them. They believe so hard in their bible that they will ignore facts presented to them. These kind of people are impossible to debate and therefore the debate was a waste of time. I understand why Bill Nye did it though, as you very well know, even if he just reached one person with reason then it's worth it. And often they mention how prayer calms them in stressful periods. And l DIG that they find some comfort in prayer.. they are GOOD PEOPLE..they deserve all the peace they can get. . The conversations are NEVER judgemental. However.. there are those that try to push their beliefs..(both atheists and religious)..And when confronted by christians (I don't push for such faith based argument. Equal rights for all)..the people I am confronted by usually use Hamm's circular reasoning... It's frustrating.. because I tend to have the SAME conversation OVER and OVER... never learning a thing..(why converse). For example, l work with a Christian that ALWAYS wants to debate me.. and I have asked him (several times) to not talk religion... because his arguments are circular. It's a waste of my time. And just like you..I want to call people that use such arguments... idiots... Now..I don't want to debate YOU...I respect your views...However.. A theory is an explanation or model based on observation, experimentation, and reasoning that describes how certain facts relate to each other, especially one that has been tested and confirmed as a general principle that explains natural phenomena and is capable of predicting additional phenomena that derive from those facts. Evolution is not a scientific law, because it is not a concise verbal or mathematical statement of a relation that expresses a narrow fundamental principle of science. A lot of uneducated people have a distorted idea of what a theory is, and how its definition manifests in regards to evolution. In other words evolution is a theory, a very well tested one with overwhelming evidence, but a theory nonetheless.

Harry Appleyard LOL it's not that simple... I think that it is important to realize that, in spite of the differences, these terms share some things in common. Both are based on tested hypotheses; both are supported by a large body of empirical data; both help unify a particular field; both are widely accepted by the vast majority (if not all) scientists within a discipline. The guy had something going on by stating that the scientific theory is different from the popular understanding of a 'theory', but that is not enough... ...anyways I could go on but my main message here is: These presenters were notoriously upsed with the creationist folks, they could've used a bit more level headedness to present their own arguments.

@ausgebombt 10 лет назад
***** Thing is, you don't have to explain anything. Only present your argument and call it a day. Don't presume you are right. You are only right until you are wrong. In this point in time, we are witnessing the collapse of an ancient set of theories, based on an even more ancient set of beliefs. We are in the midst of scientific chaos; religion cannot be disproven, but creationism as a set theory can and it has. But Evolution can, will and needs to be disproven too. After all, that's what scientific theories are for: disproving the ancient status quo, then being status quo themselves only to be disproven by more complete, better theories that will become status quo in the future. But it probably won't happen in our lifetime. (Always remember: a theory can only be scientific if it has the capability of being disproven.) Fearless individuals will accept new knowledge and admit when they are wrong. Fearful individuals will go on their blissfull ignorance.
@ausgebombt
@ausgebombt 10 лет назад
***** What I mean by "evolution needs to be disproven" - this is just the natural cycle of science and life. Every theory needs to be disproven for Science to progress. Theoretical chaos, enthropy and the resurgence of stability through negentrophy. (These are the basis of Quantum mechanics) The earth was believed to be flat and that was the status quo that prevailed, you were not a mad man by thinking the earth was flat. Then came Hellenism and disproved this theory, which was later demostrated by Sebastian Elcano's journeys. Nowadays we can send a satellite to Space and receive pictures from it SHOWING US that the Earth is round. What does this mean? This means that we SEE the Earth as Round. This does not MEAN the Earth is ROUND, we just perceive it as such. Perception and consensus (we agree that everybody is seeing a round shape) are the tools on which we establish a scientific fact. Ergo, perception is reality. But draw a circle with a pencil and you will see a round shape. Get microscopically close to it and you will see a bundle of dots that are not connected to each other. Thus, by observation, the circle is not round anymore but a collection of unconnected dots. ===== Regarding the theories I mentioned; of course creationism is a theory in itself. It is based on unscientifical claims and assumptions, and thus cannot be hypothesised (thus making it a very futile theory). Religion itself is not a theory, but it has spawned several assumptions on how the world functions that can be branded as "theories". Futile, unscientific theories at that. -------- Religion affiliates have been dwindling since the start of the 1900's. You would need to look at demographic data. We are still in a very young age of revolutionary advancements, and science will become the new religion in the long run (have a go at the "Foundation" saga by Isaac Asimov if you are curious on how that would turn out, hehe)

***** Interesting Cue Cards: "I believe in the big bang theory.. god said it and BANG it happened" - This one is very interesting to me. How do you disprove it? You can't, its based on an unmeasurable belief. This is similar to the Invisible Machine from Aristotle's theories. "Why is evolution taught as a fact?" - The card said that the bible was also a theory, which is not correct. And it disputed why can't we have creationism and evolution both as theories that are taught as school. I'm not interested in this. Creationism has been disproven and teaching it in school is archaic and irresponsible. BUT Evolution should be taught as an ongoing discovery: As the best theory that we have on how we came to be and all the supporting evidence should accompany this lesson. BUT I have a quarrell with the word "Fact". I believe it should be best if we taught and encourage children to question facts. Facts can be proved wrong. Facts can be disputed. Do not miss the opportunity to make the class you are teaching evolution to, to be real scientists: Encourage them to wonder, to question why, to doubt facts and to find their own conclussions. "Are you scared of a Divine Creator?" - This one I LOVE. Because it shows you how a religious person projects their own fears and insecurities over to those who disagree with their claims. I would have asked this person "Are you scared of life without meaning? Of nothing after death?". =) thanks for your curiosity

***** Every theory's main component is the collection of accepted hypothesis... these hypothesis are proven correct or incorrect by experimentation. But somewhere in your collection of hypothesis you will reach a gap. You will have a hypothesis that can neither be proven nor disproven by your current theory. Thus a paradigmatic shift takes place. There are many theories that have been surpased (be mindful that this does not mean proven wrong). I'm only familiar with the following because of my profession, interests and common knowledge: - Bodily Humours (phlegm, yellow bile, blood, black bile) - Phrenology - the Ptolemaic system and the Geocentric universe - the Heliocentric universe (partially) - Newtonian gravity - Aristotelian physics - the theory of Recapitulation These are some but you can find others if you will

Thank you TYT for acknowledging that not all religious people believe in the bible literally. I find it flabbergasting how many atheists only ever even consider a literal interpretation of the bible and use that to discount all religious people as though they only ever can believe ridiculous things. Religious people can be progressive and logical, the sooner people open their eyes to this truth the sooner we can come together and work against the ignorance that plagues our world. I'm sick of people making sweeping generalisations and being bigoted.

A stronger argument for the "If we came from monkeys, why are there still monkeys?" question can actually be found in the bible it's self. Genesis 2:7 says "Then the LORD God formed man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being." If we came from dirt, why is there still dirt?

what I don't understand is whether why creationists and other religious people are scared of a possibility that there is nothing after death, and find it comforting that they will probably live forever...I was like that in the childhood, but now - vice versa - I want to have a chance that one day my existence will end. existing forever is ANYWAY hell, no matter where and how you spend eternity, it will become unbearable one day and forever
@shaqatk4884
@shaqatk4884 10 лет назад
I beg to differ...tell me what is it you find so hellish about eternity? is it the prospect of living forever? maybe with your own thoughts? maybe you believe that you'd inhabit the same body that still decays?

shaqatk4884 Would most people like an extra few years of existance? Probably yes, even an extra lifespan, possibly.But an extra 1000 years? Probably not, an extra 100,000 years, what would anyone do? An extra million years? Terminal boredom would have set in. A billion? A trillion? A trillion eons? I can only conclude that you really do not understand the implications of ∞ and why any equation in which it occurs is inherently unsatisfactory
@shaqatk4884
@shaqatk4884 10 лет назад
Derek Walker Hah no one has a concept of infinity man. but i do know what limited is. now before you continue your rapid conclusions based on little info..that little i don't know what infinity is thing you guessed about me...let me explain my point. OF COURSE you would be bored. people get bored in a hundred years even. but what if you could erase boredom? hmm? we are humans organisms that depend on our memories to tell us who we are. a simple knock on the head in the right place and suddenly its kinda hard to remember how to tie your shoe or even walk... what if you had the ability to selectively choose which memories you wanted to keep and get rid of? what if you had that ability. you couldn't get bored doing something you can't remember doing. well i won't say can't i don't believe in %100 of anything. i'm an atheist but at the same time i do not wish to give up everything that i am for the void if there is a better alternative. what i'm getting at here is messing around with your personal memories to continue to do things as if they were the first time. i can go a step further than that too. what about the ability to create whatever world you want (virtual of course) the ability to explore a finite world an infinite amount of time. so to answer your question yes i would love a trillion eons....but on my own terms. if thats not possible than i gladly choose death and even in the event that my logic is wrong death is still an option in my pretend eternity.
@derekjohnwalker2
@derekjohnwalker2 10 лет назад
shaqatk4884 Without boredom would we know what interesting is? Most people who experience amnesia would rather not have, and speak of losing a part of themselves. Also if we are 'selecting' memories, are we not limiting the time scale into a manageable period. How could a life be whole, without a beginning a middle and an end? Without the 'void' to fall into, why do anything? Theres always tomorrow, and tomorrow will never ever come. Without death is there even a reason to live?
@shaqatk4884
@shaqatk4884 10 лет назад
Derek Walker i disagree. i'm speaking from a mortal point of view here. what you suggest is if we had no concept of death. i'm saying we bring that fear as well. to keep the very thing that makes is human along with us. you can argue what makes life life but ultimately that's an opinionated answer. for me life is very meaningless. Note however do not take that as me saying you can't make a point for yourself. just that when it comes down to it the sun will rise and earth will spin long after your gone not to mention when does life start and when does it end? for me and you maybe birth and death. but what about the whole universe? i don't think our little questions and thoughts can even touch what the universe really is on the macro or micro level. and even with the void as you say you tell me what the reason is to do anything when we're gonna die anyways? I mean even with biological life as we call it the objective is to pass data from one vessel, our bodies, to another, our offspring. and even then i find myself asking why all this effort and whats the point in a natural point of view. i think i may have my answer but that's an entirely other argument i did fail to talk about your first part and i agree amnesia is wrong but i used that to make a point. we are what our memories tells us we are, dare i say if some one where to force permanent amnesia onto a person with no one anywhere to care even they could care less because they are not who they once were. in that scenario who's to say what they would rather have? especially if their previous existence was very harsh verses what they awoke to.

I think we need debates-like discussions with more sides involved. Like for example, Mormon,. They touched on the idea that some creationists find the theory of evolution too complicated. Certainly, the details and vast tapestry of facts and proofs is very complicated, BUT, you don't need to understand those details, the concept of mutation and natural selection are very simple. I, you, and so many others, understood these concepts completely, almost instinctively, in grade-school. What's to get?

He had to do it, and not just for the money. Yes, the spotlight will give Ham a momentary ego boost, as well as publicity, but Ham showed the public how foolish his position and answers are. With more people like Nye handling responses cordially yet directly, these con-artists will get shut down eventually. It just can't happen soon enough. Now, if the media would spend more time with scientists, and if the scientists would spend some time polishing their social skills and interface more with the public, tricksters like Ham won't have as many people to sway.

Gonna post for the second time on this, but this message goes specifically to the people who believe in Creationism: Over 1/3 of millennials aren't affiliated with any religion, period. Religion is falling by the wayside BECAUSE kids have the entire collective of human knowledge at their fingertips. They don't need God to explain how the world works. They don't need God as an answer to every tough question they have. People don't need God to be decent human beings. If you're reading this and you don't like what I have to say and you're an active contributor in the Creationist argument and you think you have any chance in hell of winning this debate (I'm being generous calling it that) and you're not willing to change your scientific view in the face of real evidence, just know that the rest of the world is just going to wait for you to die and for your opinion marred into fact become lost to the wind, where it belongs.

Don't pick on Evolution, pick on Natural Selection. Evolution is a fact; we know life changes over time. Natural Selection is the scientific theory that explains why Evolution occurs. This. Evolution through mutation and natural selection have been proven to occur in bacteria, evolution is a fact. The theory of evolution is that this same process is what shaped humans, we have an abundance of evidence corroborating this theory as well as the theory being extremely reasonable to begin with. By compelling evidence the theory of evolution is proven.
