"Dear Pastor Bob: I would strongly like you to do a podcast on "Cussing" and all the ins and outs about it. So many people have misconceptions to the extreme! I find it hard to believe that people think a specific word is sinful. Many words that were normal suddenly became evil. I personally find that ridiculous."

Somehow I think it's even worse when someone puts the word "Holy" before a curse word...(not saying I've never been guilty of that before,myself).Besides taking the Lord's name in vain,that one seems pretty wrong to me.

Before I found Christ I use to curse a bit too much. But now I've since stopped cursing. I believe us as Christians we have a choice but in the end we should be positive in life and use kind words and show respect. I know because I lived it.

I agree we Christians should be watchful of the types of words we use in certain respects. I also have no problem with wors like s**t or f*** as a way of punctuating a thought, those are filthy words, IMO. Filthy words I see used all the time are the different ways people blasphemy the Lord's name. I agree with Pastor B as well in how Christians spend too much time being offended. I would like to add they spend too much time making everything that goes against their personal tastes as sin.

Someone I respect a lot is Mark Solomon who was a vocalist for both the Crucified and Stavesacre. He said in a book that he wrote that when he went to one specific country he was surrounded by Christians that cussed, drank, smoked and drove like maniacs. This was far different than he had experienced in America HOWEVER these people knew the word of God inside and out. in the US most Christians do not drink, smoke, cuss etc but their knowledge of the word of God is severely lacking.

Reading Corinthians, I believe that this can be one of the things Paul is talking about when he says that if a brother believes something to be wrong, don't do it and encourage him to do so, for it is sinful for him. He mentioned also that while with the Jews, he will keep to the Jewish law and while with the Gentiles, he will ignore them. He states that the only law to keep is God's law. So, while I agree that there is no point in using a lot of the "cuss" words that exist, I do believe that...

It doesn't bother me when the non-christian cuss's but when the "christian" uses them in their daily language that's a different story. when I became a christian that was one of the first things that the Lord took from me. when you sound like the world I think it's just a little harder to witness to them! I work in an industry where F-bombs are dropped like crazy but people do notice I don't talk like them and even at time's will say "sorry" because they know I am a christian.

i was brought up in a strong christian family with christian values never used curse word till i got old and into the work force. then is when the four letter words became part of my vocabulary....as of late iv been trying to take em out......i feel its ungodly unprofessional and really not necessary. i still catch my self at times.. whats really the best way to rid your self of the profanity.

+stacy holland Yeah I try to watch my language around people. So as to try and be a witness with my faith. But like at home, I drop the F-bomb and such. And of course around kids I try to filter my mouth. I was also raised in a Christian home, and learned what words were bad. But over the years my parents have been more lax especially with the word "pissed" lol No they do not use that word. But don't say anything when us children do say it around them.

I think a worse problem is making slurs or "jokes" disparaging those who are of a different race, nationality, religion, or disability than the speaker. I went on a trip once with a church group and many of them were putting down Japanese people right and left. Granted, many of them lived thru WWII, but still, calling people "j@ps" and using stereotypes like "So solly" made Christians look REALLY bad imho. That sort of thing is MUCH worse than just blurting out the F word.

I agree that cuss words are mostly used to tear down and discourage people. Example: "Man you really f****d that up you dumb a**. You're f*****g stupid. Etc. But I also believe that those same words can also be used to lift up and encourage people. Example: F*****g A man that was bad a**. You're f*****g awesome. Etc. I personally do cuss but I'm not an a**hole about it. In other words, if I'm around people that cuss, yeah I'll cuss too but never to demean anyone unless they're just outright being a jerk. But if I'm around a group of people that I feel cussing might not be appropriate, then I won't cuss. I try to at least be respectful to whomever I'm around at the moment.

I was raised by the motto of "F*** it" If bad things happen, well, **** it. Furthermore, scientific studies have shown that words that we have labeled as cuss words originate in the emotional centers of our brain as opposed to the language center. They proved that when subjected to pain or distress cussing can be healthy for the individual, it lowers blood pressure and relieves tension. So, with you, on certain points I agree. however, I suggest you look at the scientific side of cussing. (Telling a Christian to look at science, good luck with that) Lol

Robert Platt when the Bible talks about swearing it means to let your yes be yes and No be no. So signing a contract is not a biblical principle. However Jesus called the Pharisees sons of snakes. Sounds like a cuss word to me

I've always wondered why certain words were considered "bad" when their synonyms were totally okay to use. I read an interesting point in a Reddit thread about it, but I won't delve into it here on a YT comment section. It is true that a lot of times the words are used to tear people down, but sometimes they are just words used in every day conversation. What's the difference between dog sh*t and dog poop, for example? One is considered a bad word, while one isn't-- only that it is yucky. The Bible does speak of swearing in James but as in let your yes be yes and your no be no, to not swear on anything on this earth or to God.

Pastor Bob, I am floored by your analysis. Please let me start I don't mean to criticize I cant begin to understand your logic. For me, I am never upset with unbelievers who curse. They are naturally doing what there natural hearts are telling them. But cursing is more about the heart than the words. For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks, right? If I need to speak as the world speaks to give emphasis to a point or gain acceptance to a certain group then I have played in to the devils hand or put on a sinful nature to gain acceptance (which can be worse). I begin to compete with the world on the worlds terms. As a believer I shouldn't allow my speech to be as the world is, instead we should all ask the assistance of the Holy Spirit to be set apart for a special purpose, to spread the gospel to a lost and dying world. Not once did you give scripture. Why? This isn't a indictment but I am puzzled. What a marvelous opportunity to share the gospel. There are several verses you could have cited as to the importance of pure language and why the opposite is not for men who esteem Christ, who esteem holiness. Please don't confuse my statements for legalism. I think if we love Christ we only want to do what pleases him and gives honor to all men so as to "BUILD UP", as you alluded to. This could be done in a gentle way like a scalpel in a skilled surgeons hand. You have stated why you don't curse and some I agree with. Yet without biblical context or the backdrop of Christ it seems like a carnal, almost worldly, touchy-feely way of watching your speech. Ive met several non-believers who don't curse so it should go much farther than that. We ALL will be held accountable for every single careless word before a HOLY and righteous king. The verse that gets me more often than any other "...Anything that does not proceed from faith is Sin (Rom 14:23). Every time a bad word has escaped this wretched heart of mine, its never been with a grace filled, loving, patient, FAITHFUL Christ centered heart. It has always been carnal and of the old natural man and a disbelief that God can handle the situation that led me to curse in the first place. I have been part of a well known church that discreetly said we could curse, smoke a cigar, drink a beer to the glory of God. I have seen many relationships destroyed, many faith shipwrecked because cursing left unchecked leads to more worldliness. While you may not fully agree I speak from many years of experience all over the world. I also disagree with the bad words being used as a form to learn a language. In almost every case, once the person understands the impact of words recently learned in those different cultures they are almost always embarrassed, which is how I wished most AMericans would be. They have different pronunciations but every culture has taboo words and the Word of God has impact that goes beyond a culture or language or even time itself. Curse words change with time but Gods word in addressing them never changes Still love what you do. Sorry for the long windiness. God Bless and keep rocking.

Robert Mc honestly all the words you wrote that I feel were kind of in legalistic judgement of him were more offensive than any "bad words." I mean that in an honest way. Not a mean way. I'm not saying you're completely legalistic or anything either.
@TheBiopoem
@TheBiopoem 6 лет назад
I'm just saying there is no list of "bad words" in the Bible. Words are not inherently bad. People make them bad with what is in the heart when they say them. Like the word "hell" for example. That also can happen without any "cuss words" at all. Telling a person "you'll never amount to anything" is cursing.

Obviously we should stand out as an example to the world. But sometimes a cuss word can convey something and carry some weight that isn't possible otherwise. Paul even recognized this. And he used a word that was known to be a cuss word in his day. Though translators have tried to cover it up, Paul did use a word that was not, shall we say, polite. But the use of this word in its actual historic context is more powerful that the way it's translated: "What is more, I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them rubbish, that I may gain Christ…" -Philippians 3:8 The Greek word translated as “rubbish” is skybalon, but that’s not the most accurate translation of the Greek. Skybalon is a dirty word in Greek, and our lovely wholesome translators have really dulled the translation down. What does it mean? The NET Bible translates it as “dung”, which is still not quite the full meaning. The NET Bible note on verse 8’s “dung” says: "The word here translated “dung” was often used in Greek as a vulgar term for fecal matter. As such it would most likely have had a certain shock value for the readers. This may well be Paul’s meaning here, especially since the context is about what the flesh produces." Paul swears in his letter. This wasn’t like saying “I consider them poop,” or “I consider them fecal matter”, no it was much worse than that. Skybalon was a vulgar term! It has been found in ancient graffiti and in manuscripts linking it as pure profanity! Paul purposefully uses a vulgar and offensive term in his letter in order to grab the attention of his readers and get into their faces. So while I agree that our words should always be appropriate, there may be certain occasions where an impolite word may be the most effective way to describe something. Like, in Paul's example, that his life before Christ was nothing but "skybalon."

If you write horror Bob, these kind of words are in our vocabulary. I think people are too offended easy -- I engage people on an intellectual level, and when I use them it's in a character where some characters I write are the Christ-haters in the thing. It makes me nervous because I can do them authentically. There is something that author Jeremy Robinson said that rings true here -- contrary to religious fiction, strong language in the real world exists, and if you going to do horror and a Christian. Do it right or don't do at all meaning if you're going to let one slip, go for broke and have them swear quite hard because it is expressing a sense of shock and horror -- some horrors can't be expressed without swearing if you watch a movie like Orphan you'd be swearing in the theater quite loud in shock screaming, "Are you [bleeping] kidding me? This horror exists!"

It reminds me of when my Army recruiter told me "The Drill Sergeants are supposed to swear at you." Well, when I arrived I got cussed out up and down, left and right and all around. I'm not trying to justify it, but constant swearing is a fact of military life. After I got out, I noticed my mouth was getting cleaner again.

I disagree...the Bible talks about on how your mouth is used to exalt the Lord but then use the same mouth to speak utter words, cussing, foul language?.. I mean this modern Christianity doesn't cut it for me..it's like everything is aloud and permitted cause of His grace?? Bible also speaks about taking care of our salvation and the diference on those who walk on darkness rather than the light...creation was made thru the powerfull word of God, He spoke and it was made..the power of life and death are in our tongue... so please don't sugar coated..yes there are worse things out there..but then again; sin is sin, no mater how you portray it 😉

William Solano cursing is not a four letter word. There is no list of "cuss words" in the Bible. This is because cursing is much deeper than a four letter word. Saying "you will never amount to anything" is cursing someone. No four letter word needed. This is also why the word hell is in the Bible. Because even though some consider it a "bad word" words in and of themselves aren't evil. Syllables aren't evil. It is heart intention that makes something evil or not. Foul language is talking about gossip, lies, and saying things to hurt others. Not certain words that some cultures deemed as "bad." Stop the legalism crap.
