😂 I have to admit I almost pulled that clip in edit, then 🤷‍♂️😂 what the heck, it’s just me. It’s what I did this time on a non high press fit bearings needing a love tap to sneak in. Also a bushing I did the same. Press is the way to go. This bearing turns a quarter turn only during swing, I could have just used a bushing. Oh also I use claw hammers to build planes 🤪 grew up as a framer, love hammers since I could crawl. How about this for a video warning??, “Do not do this at home, may cause cancer or a smashed finger, use a press”. Love the comment ❤️ thanks for following this knucklehead. Your the best.

Mike, your engineering abilities, the guts you have to tackle projects most of us would say were impossible (yet you make look easy), starting with a clean sheet and designing something this robust yet simple, makes you a rock star in my book. I keep going back in my mind to the overall build, somehow you manage to get the CG just right. That in itself is a feat of elephantine proportions.

Thats an almost perfectly true comment. For a very good reason. Mike has the knowledge to be able to foresee all (but in Mikes mind its, HOPEFULLY all) the possible problems that enable the flow of the designs. Without foreseeing all the possible problems, the design will be flawed. Public hardly ever have the ability to watch Mikes vodeos and be a step ahead in our minds, because they cant see the potential problems looming up at the designs. So when a designed part is built and it works, that evidences for Mike that he didnt unforsee any of the foreseable problems. Thats an adrenaline rush that makes great people deservedly pleased to be who they are. Its called self esteam. That is exactly what stops otherwise justified "self confidence", from entering the slippery slope down to stupidity. Some people will measure, cut, and measure again to check upon their own skills and tool quality etc. Others simply measure and cut and bash it into place (if they bother to measure). Mike is simply in the former measure cut measure group.

One lesson from the Gimli Glider was that it can be advantageous to have the nose gear drop into the wind, as opposed to pushing forward against it. Of course in this case, it would have moved the gear back, decreasing the directional stability that you mentioned. So, best not run out of fuel over Manitoba. 🙂

I don't know who first said that Mike's real hobby was sanding and he just makes airplanes as an excuse to do more sanding, but I was not disappointed by the amount of sanding in the construction of Turbulence. The carbon fiber was a gimme but the thickness of the anodising was bonus.
@JimOHalloran

Is that why he makes enormous custom, mirror smooth carbon fibre cowls for his planes, to get more more sanding in? 😀 I can see it, Mike leads a busy, hectic lifestyle. A bit of quiet sanding at the end of the day would be almost meditative.

It's funny watching younger Mike in some of these videos. He gets to the end of his piece to camera and gives the thumbs up, and he wants to say something else (3:05), but he doesn't quite have the words and seems a little lost. Younger Mike hasn't quite figured out that he wants to say "back to work" and get on with it! It's crazy how much that phrase has become a part of a Mike Patey video, and it's always a bit jarring when you don't get one when you'd expect! 😀

Hey Mike, I'm a retired Welsh Paramedic living in Cwmbran, South Wales, UK, I Had to retire on grounds of Ill health after injuring my spine. So Mobility limited but a life long aviation fan (My Dad was in the RAF just after the war, last deployment was Kai tak in Hong kong...The final place in the world to use the Spitfire operationally!) So what to do now? Well I'm not particularl rich as Ambulance Service Pension was limited due to enforced earlier retirement... I built a Home flight simulator based around the revolutionary Honeycomb Alpha + Bravo units!...also make scale model aircraft...and I Avidly watch You Tube aviation videos, LOTS of them and then I discovered your channel, the result was total awe struck inspiration!, I have a brother who has his own light engineering company, he does a lot of CAD work, anyway, I've converted him to watch your aviaton contruction videos too from his usual diet of high performance Motor cycle ones! Sorry for the 'Life story' part but I wanted to illustrate how your videos have reached far and wide but not only in a geographical sense but in a socially diverse one! Plus they certainly cheered me up on bleak days where chronic pain rears it's ugly head! So..a new Subscriber and avid follower from Wales. in the UK. Diolch yn fawr iawn! Cymru am byth!
