Action length shouldn't affect it is it a magnum bolt face?
@vdcfirearms3609
@vdcfirearms3609 2 года назад
No it was not. And yes on a non-controlled round feed gun it will affect it. It has too much room to move around before it clears the action and the extractor lets go of the round before it can be ejected.

Isn't .220 Swift a long action round? That might work for a conversion too.

what is the difference between ejecting a longer and shorter round with the same case diameter?
@calebreutener870
@calebreutener870 3 года назад
It fell out of the extractor. Longer cases rest on the chamber long enough for the case to get to the ejector. At least that's my understanding

Action length shouldn't matter wonder if it was a magnum bolt face?
@randylong8156
@randylong8156 2 года назад
That would be true In a push feed rifle. Control round feed is different. The pre 64 243's were all standard length action rifles. If it was a magnum bolt face it wouldn't Control the standard case as soon as you open the bolt it would drop out.

The remington 783 is a long action for the 243, pushfeed and handle the brass smooth...?

I wonder if there was miscommunication between the seller and the buyer and it was actually built for a 25 - 06? That would make more sense to me. I've never heard of anybody trying to put a short action bullet in a long action. Thank you

@robertqueberg4612 5 лет назад
Brian Lee , In a push feed action it can be a problem. My first 22-250 was built in a VZ24 Mauser action in 1965. Being a controlled feed action will allow for these things to happen. I never had a failure to feed, or to extract either a live round or fired case. If the rifle was actually built for a 25-06 as you suggest, there would have very likely been a case separation if the firing pin could detonate the primer. It sounded to me that rebarreling to a 25-06 would be a way to put the other parts to some use. Another avenue would be to rechamber the rifle to 22-6mm Remington, which would likely need a 8” or 9” twist barrel to stabilize a 80 grain bullet. Another loser!

I have a question for you because you seem to be really up on guns. I've been doing my homework and it seems like CZ builds a really good gun I'm thinking about buying their CZ 550 in a 300 Mag? What's your opinion on that you see any problems with CZ?
@robertqueberg4612
@robertqueberg4612 5 лет назад
Brian Lee , I am sorry to run out of information on your purchase. CZ seems to have a good reputation on line, but I have had no experience with them, nor have I talked to anyone that has one to ask. The local gunsmith that I helped part time for years was mainly doing warranty work for the American brands. Sounds like either brown bear or elk hunting. Best wishes on your hunt for a rifle and your trophy. Or moose!

@@robertqueberg4612 Thank you for your honesty. Yes elk and moose are definitely on the menu. Maybe I'm weird but I've never been inspired to shoot a grizzly bear. I will shoot a black bear though because my wife loves to eat them. I only shoot things I'm going to eat. Thank you

The fix for that is simple. Replace the action with a short action.
@duckslayer11000
@duckslayer11000 6 лет назад
A 22-250 shell is only .103 shorter than a .308 so I wonder if the winchester action is that much pickier than a Remington or if another factor is to blame. Just trying to start a friendly conversation not a WAR :)
@vdcfirearms3609
@vdcfirearms3609 6 лет назад
If it was a short action it would not have been a problem. But this was a long action that was a 30-06.

VDC Firearms very true I guess I forgot to mention the most important part of my statement and that was in reference to the Army using a long action for .308
@vdcfirearms3609
@vdcfirearms3609 6 лет назад
Yes and if you noticed I mentioned that if he had used a Winchester 70 with the claw extractor (pre 64 or Mauser) it probably would have worked. And keep in mined that the Army M40 are custom built and tuned to do so. The customer did not want to put anymore money into this gun. So yea you are correct some guns you can get away with it and some you can not.
@trevorjones8091
@trevorjones8091 6 лет назад
it has nothing to do with long or short action. its the caliber the bolt face is chambered for. need to have the bolt face changed or machined to accomadate the smaller diameter of the case. then it will extract, also if run a go no go gauge to check headspace
@vdcfirearms3609
@vdcfirearms3609 6 лет назад
You are wrong. The 30-06 and the 22-250 have the same rim diameter of .473. It has everything to do with the long and short action there is just too much room for the round to move around in the action with the spring loaded ejector pushing on the round. So keep trying Trevor and you may want to refrain from making assumptions about gun that you have not worked on.

@chughes44
@chughes44 3 года назад
@@vdcfirearms3609 correct me if im wrong, but the dimensions of model 70 bolts and actions are the same between long and short action other than actual length. The malfunction is happening before the length even plays a factor. People run short calibers in long actions all the time, 260 rem is one that is probably the most common around my area. It is not ideal to run long actions on short calibers for feeding and cycle time reasons, but as far as extracting, it should make no difference.
@vdcfirearms3609
@vdcfirearms3609 3 года назад
@@chughes44 You are almost correct. If this had been chambered in 308 or 260 Rem it most likely would have been just fine. However this was chambered in 22-250 a round that is shorter then the 308. It is a true short action round and works well in many of the mini actions that are out there. putting that round in an action as long as the post 64 Winchester long action you run into this kind of problem.
