Custom Weed Control Mix For Lawns With A Spike

This is my custom (and primary) weed killer that I'm using and then I'm spiking it for Nutsedge.
WARNING: Rates vary by grass type! The rates in this vid are for Bermuda. Please consult product label for your particular site, grass type and location.

This mix works on Bermuda, Zoysia, Kentucky Blugrass, Perennial Rye and Turf Type Tall Fescue and carefully can be used on fine fescue. It's not for St Augustine. (the Quinclorac will harm St Aug)
AGAIN- consult the label before you mix because the rates vary by grass type!! Know your turf type BEFORE mixing and applying.
Here are the weeds controlled with this mix:
2,4-D is the heavyweight here, and acts systemically as a growth regulator in the target plant. If I am to say this simply, it acts like a steroid and causes the plant to overgrow itself quickly and die from the inside. The word “Amine” is basically the delivery method, as opposed to an ester. I like Amines because they have less chance of drift which can cause harm to non target plants. Amines are much better for use in hot climates or during the summer up north. (but not over 90 degrees)

I have a bottle of Speedzone Lawn Weed Killer that I bought off Ebay. When I viewed it again it said the product couldn't be shipped to NJ. So when I run out I will be using Bonide Weed Beater Ultra. I have used the Sedgehammer plus and it worked great !! Thanks for the tip about using baby shampoo as a surfactant. Thank your sons for their time in the military, have a great weekend !!

On my Quinclorac Select 75 DF herbicide the rate is 1 tablespoon (0.367 ounces) per gallon of water to cover 1000 sq. feet.

Morning Allyn!, So I am getting ready to start shopping around for my NEW products for weed control and this video is exciting. Living in Massachusetts, and whereas I am not 100% familiar with the grass types growing in my lawn, my question is...."do I have to worry about killing grass with this custom mixture". Let me explain a little more. Last year I had to replant an entire back lawn after replacing our septic system/leach field. So you can imagine working with a "blank canvas" right....that said, after 1 full growing season, I have reestablished a good sod base. The challenge now is to to get rid of the "new weed base" that is also mixed in. I'll get some pics later this spring but I want to be sure to get down my "PRE-EMERGENT" (and you previously recommended doing this 2 times based on some other information I gave you).....but my guess is, I will be walking around with the spray can to spot kill lots of crab grass which there was quite a bit of......just want to be sure this custom mix will "play well" with my current turf....I'm pretty sure I don't have any "fancy grasses" growing....but mostly the ?? fine fiscue, rye, ?? blue?? the A-typical Northeast lawn.... As always Allyn, love the videos, love the passion for the lawn!!...can't wait to get started up here......thanks man!!

Now this video definitely brings me back to my Trugreen days mixing hand cans to go run service calls. Thank you for info on Solutions Self Chem, I hope to find a granular pre emergent for crabgrass that is not mixed with fertilizer. I have just over an acre and my lawn does not need any help growing in the summer. :)

Quinclorac label indicates that the product should be used with Menthylated Seed Oil. In your combo you used nonanionic surfactant. Wont that cut the effectiveness of crabgrass kill?

Allyn how did you come up with .73oz of the quincloroac? The label says .367oz per 1000ft. and spot application .367oz in at least 1 gallon of water. And not to spray more then .73oz per 1000sqft per year. I just want to make sure I mix the right amount. Thanks

Great videos. I have watched many of them and learned a lot. I have a larger sized yard with 1 acre of grass in the Philadelphia area. I have been at my new house for a few years now and I inherited a yard that was neglected for years by the prior owner. I have just about every type of common weed found in a lawn and they are in abundance. I have gone through about a week ago with my ATV and backpack sprayer an covered everything with the same mix you suggest. I am getting good results, but I clearly have a lot more to do. How long should I wait to go through with another round? My plan is to get the weeds under good control this summer and over seed in the winter. Does this sound about right? Thanks for your help.

Great information! I'm in Orlando and we have some Bermuda but mainly St. Augustine. I'll be anxious to hear you formula for that. Also, an organic herbicide would be great. I've heard white vinegar but never tried it.

+Something 2LookAt unfortunately, there are no organic herbicides that work to any great degree - especially when you are dealing with as much issue as I am. That's why I recommend a hybrid approach whereby you use weed killers in the beginning until you get the lawn thick enough to resist weed pressure on its own.

I'm in Canada where 2,4-D is still a banned product. Being that is the heart and soul of this formula, I am not sure how to proceed. :| I keep trying to make my lawn better but the weeks continue to spread and I literally have more weeds than grass at this point. Dandelions specifically

Thanks for all of the great videos. About three weeks ago I put down grass seed and starter fertilizer (after clearing grass/weeds and tilling), and by now I have some great growth. Unfortunately, I also have a boatload of weeds of every type. I purchased all of the chemicals in this video and I’m ready to start spraying, but wanted to know if I needed to wait for the grass to mature a bit before doing so. My concern is that, in one area especially, the weeds are blocking out the grass, and taking their sun/nutrients. What are your thoughts? Spray, or wait? If I should wait, how long?

2nd viewing. 2,4-D isn't very nice to my Centipedegrass so I'm kinda afraid to use it. Clemson U said it's not a good product for me. 😢 But there's always Celsius! 😉 or Grass Beater Over The Top Grass Killer. July 23rd and I'm still going after them bad weeds 🤦🏼‍♂️

I live in Austin, TX now temp is 80s, I applied the same mixed solution in my lawn late last monday evening (its been more than 7 days over) i am seeing lot of yellow spot, whereas before my lawn was very green with lot of weeds. There are zero crab grass or most of them gone, zero clover, still seeing Dandelion weeds. will it come back green after few days ? do i need to use any milorganite herbicide ? Do i need apply the same application one more time after 3 months ? Please let me know thanks

One quick question. According to the AG South 2,4-D Amine label, 3 oz / gal would be the maximum for hard to control weeds. I live in Nashville TN and have a tall fescue lawn. Do you think 4 oz / gal might be too hot? Great video! Thanks

+John Herrera I would never use the word "safe" with any of these pesticides. However, risk is minimal after the product dries - usually 1 hour but go ahead and give it 2-3 hours just to be extra careful. You should see results in 5-7 days

Hello LCN, Greetings from Houston Texas! I mixed one gallon exactly as instructed in the video. It did a great job on getting rid of the weeds in my Bermuda lawn but it also resulted in yellow spotting throughout the surrounding application area. The grass does not look completely dead just annoying spots in my otherwise green turf. Is this normal or did I do something wrong? Is there something that I should or can do to repair it? Many Thanks! I Love Your Videos and appreciate any advice.

kj jg This mix did a great job with killing the weeds but stunted my Bermuda Grass. The turf did not completely die just some tip burn and eventually bounced back after several weeks. I will add some Chelated Iron to the mix the next time I spot spray for weeds. I also might test this on an inconspicuous area before application throughout the lawn.

+Francisco Rivera brown spots are not always indicative of a fungus. don't apply fungicide unless you are sure it's a disease and which disease it is

+foxcomputertech currently I spray it out into the other part of my lawn that will be getting re-habbed next year. And typically that is what I would do anyway, just spray it out onto the lawn (unless it's something like glyphosate but this wasn't)

I got this bottle at tractor supply in comes in a quart bottle I think its under 20.00 I believe it should last a long time just lets you know where you sprayed then goes a way couple days of rain

+Matthew Stock great questions and one I forgot to answer in the video. The quinclorac and sedgehammer are fine for bentgrass but the 2, 4-D can injure it. I would not take the chance.
