Dracaenas are beautiful architectural plants, native to western and tropical Africa. Plants produce bold rosettes of strap-like leaves at the tip of each shoot, as older leaves gradually fade and fall to leave bare stems at the base. Dracaenas rarely branch out, so cuttings of various heights are usually planted together for a bushier effect.
Each section of stem has the ability to develop roots from its base, while new shoots will emerge through the tip and sides
One of the easiest way to propagate your Dracaena plant involves simply cutting off the top.
Snip it just below the leaf line and be sure to include at least one node: roots grow from these round, white bumps on the stem.
Then, either plant your cutting in some soil or place it in a nice vase filled with fresh water. I prefer the latter method, as it allows me to see how the cutting is doing and whether it has rooted yet.
Place the container in a warmish spot and wait!
Roots and new growth should appear pretty quickly during the warm Summer months, while things can take a little longer during Wintertime.
If you’re water-propagating, try moving the cutting to soil once the roots are about 1 inch/2.5 cm. Or don’t; the plant won’t mind and fresh green leaves look great in a pretty vase. I especially like the look of multiple thin-necked vases such as these filled with plant cuttings.
If you’re worried removing the top of your Dracaena will result in a sad, headless plant, don’t worry. One or multiple nodes close to the top of the original should start sprouting new leaves soon. It will be back to looking its best in no time.

Light is inhibitory for roots (direct or indirect, even fluorescent). Your experiment proves this. Roots do better in a shaded or darker bottle than clear bottle. The leaves need the light, but the roots need the dark. Great video on propagation.

i have never propagated but I will. I just keep moving mine to bigger pots. However I have had them seed in pots. When they get root bound the plant will create the best smelling flower . It only blooms at night and has the best smell that will make your whole house smell wonderful.

Hello, thank you so much for this informative video. I have a Dracaena Massangeana (bought 2 years ago in ikea 🙂). I really love it but since 2 months, all the leaves turned brown. I didn't believe it was worth trying, but now I will definitely try to cut and propagate some sprouts from the main cane. Then maybe the main cane will produce new sprouts next spring. When there's green, there's always life 🙂

Thank you so much for sharing this information. I've got a 4 year old Dracaena that grew beautifully it's first year, but hasn't grown at all the last 3. The first year I kept it in a 6' × 4' east facing window of my living room. That window looks out onto a broad covered porch so the dracaena received no direct sunlight something which I imagined would benefit the tropical plant. So I moved it into a south facing farmhouse (half French single) door that opens onto an uncovered patio. So now the plant sits in front of the in-swinging door - which I stained dark cherry & added shiny brass hardware to. The dracaena makes a beautiful focal piece there inside the all glass storm door but now I understand why it hasn't grown and its leaves curl inwards. It's overheating, sunburnt, & overdosing on salt & who knows what else from the tap water & random fertilizer treatments I've been poisoning it with unwittingly. Thanks again for the information. (I think you saved my dracenia's life.)

Thank you so much for this! I love my big dracaena plants, but learning how to take care of them properly has taken time. My second big corn plant is currently failing-its stems are shriveling, which suggests it's no longer able to move water up to the leaves. I think that's from watering it too much in the wintertime :(. I have time to propagate it from its gorgeous top leaves, though!

Hi I really enjoyed your video, it was very informative! I have a dumb cane and the leaves started coming out brown so it was not really growing. I then noticed that the cane itself is soft and hollow feeling, the other cane that’s in the same pot is hard all the way through. I believe the soft cane in dead, so what should I do? Should I remove it? I think I was watering at the base of the plant causing root rout. You’re advise will be great full, I really don’t want to loose the plant.

My large dracaena mass cane fell off my table because it started to lean the last couple days and I didn't tend to it. It basically fell head first and it broke the biggest shoot of beautiful leaves almost completly off. Kind of like when you try and rip a branch off a tree but it's barely stuck on the bark and a little more, but you can't rip it off its too strong. I cut it off and I put it into seeding soil with honey as a hormone for the cutting. It I see the plant start to do poorly in the next few days then I will remove it from the seed starting soil and put in water until strong roots develop

Until it has roots, the water will turn polluted, so should be changed often. After it has roots, it can go over a week without change. My sister has cordyline with roots in water, and never changes it. She just tops it off. I believe that it has been over a year. Dracena, might be the same.
