Each sale is an opportunity for a story. I sold new cars for about 18 months was not particularly good at it but still have many stories both good and bad about the sales I made. I do think much of the reputation of the car business. When you go into a business and expect them to "loose money" on the transaction to "earn your business" you've created a situation where the person who can make you believe they're losing $500 to sell you a car are going to be the most successful in the business. It became an industry where lying became a necessary skill to be successful.
I really appreciate you touching on the difference between some of us. I'm so sick of people judging me without even giving me a chance to earn their business because I work at a dealership. Some of us are good guys just trying to afford a house for our family.

My Family is in business and my Dad has gone to his sweet spot but he always told me you CAN make just as much money being honest as you can being Dishonest and I have seen over the years the guys that were Dishonest in business are no longer around . ! That's the entire reason for it. The dishonest ones never worked a day in their life and do not possess the IQ required to do an honest day's work and the compassion to care about the customer. They want all the money right now, so they lie cheat and steal to get it. Then spend all their profits made to hire people to cover up the crimes and destroy evidence, and then it all unravels, they go to prison, and are left with nothing.

Rabbit, I just picked up a 91 Z28 Convertible with 5k original miles. But man, I am going to double check this check. Mine was an export model and I am stationed overseas in England, I bought it off of the second owner. First owner was a Japanese man who purchased it new. I hope my mileage is legit because I plan on sending it back to the states and selling it soon. Love a trailer park thirdgen brother! Hell yeah!

Interesting info, thanks Rabbit. Here's another one, I needed to replace the cluster in the 2002 Subaru WRX in my profile picture a few years ago. I found one on the auction site that actually had fewer miles than the car. I opened the back of the cluster, bent a couple of little tabs and swapped the memory chip. The new cluster went in with the correct mileage. The car says 245,000 miles, I could have a 140,000 mile car in 20 minutes if I wanted. Never trust an odometer.

They are also clients that often need to quickly get rid of property. A neighbor of mine did fine in Rx for years, then against everyone's advice, he traded his old pickup for a white, pimped out Caddy. That was 2 to 4 yrs. I was dumb enough not to know until he was in jail. Some of the best hot rod projects I have ever seen were sponsored by one crime or another. Crime never pays, but they can a blast until the repo man rolls into town.

I'm an attorney. Back when I was wet-behind-the-ears, a friend bought a car at Toyota that somehow they managed to sell to someone else before she got the car. She had a deposit on the car, and she was fine with the issue - but the dealership refused to give her deposit back. I was dating her friend, so I got called in to negotiate her money back. It didn't go well, and in the end the car salesman told me that he didn't believe me "because I'm a lawyer." I knew I was cut of for them business because I immediately responded "a used-car-salesman says what?" She got her deposit back....

So I've been trying to pivot out of software development and IT into information security so this video is right up my alley. So many people are unaware how un-secure and easy manipulated information and technology is.
Completely by accident, my friend had a 2001 S10 that had like 170k on the digital odometer that didn’t have the tach. He wanted a factory tach cluster so he went to the salvage yard to get one. When he plugged the “new” cluster in, the odometer read like 108k and clock the miles from there. When he sold the truck a few years later, he was very upfront and honest about the mileage discrepancy to the buyer. It blew our minds to find out that it IS possible to do this with some digital odometers
Oh and something that this reminded me of. I worked at a dealership and 1 thing they did was work with a decal and sticker maker and they would make their own "Special Edition " vehicle packages for a big mark up. Mostly on trucks from what I seen. That's why I quit turning wrenches when I did. It's equally as had to find a shop that can be trusted to take your car to as it is to work at 1.
Carfax is a nice tool but when you read through you can see mileage is not always reported. And like you said it only knows what its told when I sold my low mileage 05 Dodge Dakota car fax is clean but my wife had backed it into a poll and I got the tail light and popped the dent out and fixed it myself. But it had ( at time I sold it) a clean Carfax
My best flip was a 1986 Iroc Z-28 Tuned port with rear disc brakes. I bought it and a 75 harley for $400 at an estate auction. The camaro was a 1 owner and had 65k miles on it but had been left under a tarp for the last 10 years. We ran it through the detail shop and got it cleaned up fairly nice and listed it on ebay. It sold to a collector in florida for $4500 and he had a shipper come get it.
3rd Gen Camaros are hot now? Glad to hear it because I still have my Red 91' Z28 r7u that I bought in 93'. Heated garage stored since. When I was younger I heard too many older men saying one of their biggest mistakes was selling the car of their youth. So back then I made a promise to myself never to sell it and I'm glad I kept it. I got a car from the dealership my dad works at and they handed me a 2 person carfax. Zero wrecks, correct mileage. I bought it and promptly a week later the clutch went. Get it on the lift, wrecked and somewhat fixed. Some years later I carfax again... Apparently I'm the 8th owner, it switched hands 7 times in 4 years. Still love the dang car.
I had to replace the cluster on my 95 Accord and saw how easy and tempting that would be to do, but I didn’t think about ever selling it. But for Honda’s it’s a right of passage to see how many miles you can get out of them! Right now my highest mileage Honda is my current 00’ Civic coupe with 272k. I’m going for the long game with this one hoping to get 400k or better out of it lol.
I'm not a mechanic, but I happen to live near the major salvage yards in my area. Honda Elements, even with high miles, are going for a lot right now, especailly in the Pacific Northwest. The gauge cluster is easy to swap out. You don't even need to go inside the cluster to change the mileage. You can just swap out a high mileage cluster for a lower mileage gauge cluster. I've even seen Elements from small dealers that have a CarFax that seem frozen in time. It looks like no one drove the car for several years between recorded service intervals. They don't match the annual average of miles per year for a car that ceased production in 2011. Another issue with Elements is the gauge clusters fail, so they do get changed with a salvage cluster. Caveat emptor: Buyer beware.

I remember being a kid and thinking how high tech they were. By the 90s all those old 80s digital dash cars we're not so desirable anymore...
Over here in the UK, this is far harder to do on cars as the mileage is recorded every year when the car has its annual MOT(road worthiness test) and is available to check online with the licence plate number. So although there are those people that do clock their cars back, they couldn’t go back further than it’s last test.
Thanks for the lessen. I knew it was easy on 80's cars. Just not that easy. I'm wanting to get a tired 85 Fiero GT or 86 to 87 SE. I would be changing the stock analog guages for aftermarket digital. I have seen C4 Vett guages dropped in a Fiero. The guage cluster fits in the spot but you have to make a custom face covering. I will also drop the factory 140hp V6 out and swap in a 260hp GM L32 Series III Supercharged motor from a Pontiac Grand Prix 2004-05 GTP/06-07 GT, 05 Bonnaville, 04Monte/Impala SS. I will drive it for a while and see if thats all the low weight of the car can handle or add ZZ Performance Stage II Water Intercooler, ZX Cam/lifters, Intense Heads & PCM, custom exahust and more for 380hp with a redline of 6400rpm.
In the UK this is called "clocking" and it was really common across car dealers right up until recently but luckily in about 2010 the government started stating the mileage record on MOT sheets but because our cars don't have a MOT (Safety check) for the first 3 years dealers buy cars with huge mileages just before the first mot and roll them back to be low mileage
Had a buddy who used to work at New Venture Gear/ Magna Powertrain (now closed) They were the "best" place to work in town as they made transfer cases for Chrysler/Jeeps. He could crawl under your jeep and disconnect the odometer. He'd buy a brand new jeep with his company discount, unhook it at 300 miles and drive it for 6/8 months and hook it back up. Then he would sell his jeep at a year with only a couple 1000 miles on it at more then he paid. Turn around and get another new Jeep.
I bought a 02 Silverado that was rolled a few years ago. When I got it fired up, the odometer showed 51k. I put the cluster on Ebay with no reserve and it went for $250. You can't roll them back but you can change the cluster
I knew a guy who would swap clusters for warranty and service work on a fairly new truck. It had well over 100k miles but when it went to the dealer it had 21k miles 😆
In most of these vehicles with digital dashes the mileage is stored in the PCM not the Cluster. In Ford's and Chrysler's when you change the Cluster the Security System will do a Lock Out and you have to have it Flash Programmed to the Vehicle. When it's Flashed the original miles show up on the new Cluster. Changing the Cluster only works on vehicles with a Dial Type Odometer.
My buddy bought a 97 F-250 Quad cab Power Stroke with what he thought had 225,000 miles on it. 2 months after he bought it the engine went out so he put a new engine in it and all was well. So about 6 months later we see this guy at the gas station and he walks up and says hey that's my old truck i can't believe its still chugging along. He says how mamy miles you got on it now? My buddy said well the engine went out with 225,000 on it and so i replaced it. The guy says that can't be right when i traded it to such and such car lot it had 425,000 miles on it. The car lot guy rolled the clock back 200,000 miles and doubled his money on the truck. After talking to other people come to find out this guy was notorious for doing this on diesel trucks.
In 89, The very first vehicle I ever bought was an OBS 88 Chevy Silverado. Turned out the Seller had rolled the miles back from 65,000 down to 32,000. The fraud was discovered because he had it serviced at the big Chevy dealership downtown. When I took it in for service at the same dealership, the mechanics there saw the discrepancy and notified me. Wound up suing the guy and won, but he never paid😩.
Definitely happens with newer cars too. I sold a 2012 malibu with 250K on it to some shady flipper with cash. A couple weeks later I get a call from a guy a couple hundred miles away. He said " Hey I just bought this car from a guy and you are the last person on the title...something seems not right, just wondering what you can tell me about it". I said well, I sold that car a couple weeks ago to a guy who had cash and was in a hurry. It's a good 'round town car, we took good care if it, probably about the best 250K mile car you're gonna find. After a brief silence the guy said "the one I bought has 114K" . I said, I'm sorry dude but I've only sold one 2012 Malibu in my life and it had 250K.
Cars in Arizona have to go through smog checks, and the odometer reading is recorded at that point. I don't know if it's reported to carfax, but you can request emission history from the State and see if there is an odometer discrepancy.
i seen someone roll back on a 2016 f250 platinum..but it’s done different then any other way … when it was new he had some kinda program where when he got it new & started driving from day one it only counted a mile every 4 miles 🤷🏼♂️
It's funny. I follow another page for a dealer who sells a ton of SUPER clean, low mileage, Fox body Mustangs... 5 liter coupes and hatchbacks, in all the popular colors. MINT looking cars. I haven't see so many clean Fox bodies since I worked at a Mustang shop in the early '90s. Seems kinda "odd" to see so many available now.
I had a 2008 Acura CL Type S 6 Speed that had 230,000 miles on it. The brake lines and fuel lines over the gas tank were rusty so I sold it because it's a huge and expensive job to replace them. The kid came right to the house and quickly gave me cash and drove it to Massachusetts. A month later I received a call from another guy in Mass asking me if I used to own this car. I said I had. He asked me why I would well it with only 110,000 miles on it. I assured him that was not the case and he was pretty ugly at the guy he bought it from. I haven't heard what the outcome was but it opened my eyes to this.
I saw on RU-vid a news report on a guy in Florida using dealer software to rollback lease cars so the owners would not be hit with the mileage fees. He was getting over 500 a pop sometimes to do this.

It still happens here in SA even with a digital OD, they go down to pick and pull and find a cluster with less miles and put it in the new car. That's what happened with my 2001 jeep. I bought it with 101,000 found out when I sold it someone ran the fox and showed me the last reported millage of 226,000 hell of cut
I'm always skeptical of old low mileage trucks. Now my Grandfather only put 20,000 miles on his truck over 4 years but he also had braille parking marks on the bumpers. Most people didn't buy trucks for them to sit in the garage and not get miles on them.
In Eastern Europe cutting odometers is a thing done on 9/10 non enthusiast cars, every car for sale "has" 250,000, when they usually were german fleet cars and repainted taxis with over 500,000 KM's.
When I look at a vechicle, the last thing I look at is the odometer, I bought a 78 Dodge 350 pickup that came out of Pa, the dash fuel gauge said unleaded gas only, which at that time was in a 150, the block was red and the heads were painted blue, the truck was built out of a scrap pile I believe, but we got 4 years out of that 500 dollar truck and it made 3 trips between New York and Southeast Georgia, the rust got the best of it

A couple weeks ago I picked up some paper work at my dads house. After I got out of the Navy I was rebuilding 80’s and early 90’s S-10’s and Blazers. I found some print outs from EBay of trucks I bid on. I laughed when I found 3 vehicles I bid on from you in 2001. Other than me, the other 4 bidders were the same on all 3 vehicles. 🤷🏻♂️😂

Ha! The Camaro reminds me of a 1987 Buick Turbo T I ran across about ten years back. Medium gray metallic, low low miles, T Tops, and GNX wheels. Real sharp car. For sale by Gateway Classics. That was my first red flag, LOL. I 'faxed it, and lo and behold, it was odometer discrepancy, plus a theft recovery. I kinda knew this would be the case, as it had a really slick looking factory style 140 MPH speedo, and all of the exterior badges were missing. Told me right away, the car had been painted, and that someone had been in there! Fast forward to about 6 months ago, I ran across the exact same car, and with only 12,000 more miles. Poor bastard that was selling it likely had no clue.
Interesting the NHTSA changed the odometer rule regarding mileage disclosure from 10 years to 20 years starting this year on 2011 and newer vehicles to supposedly combat the problem!
